Fordson Standard was the first tractor I drove on my grandpa’s farm, then he bought an E27N, wow I loved that old tractor even more, I was only 13.

Properly tuned and and setup correctly it will start with the crank handle. Fresh fuel and drain the carburetor float chamber. Clean the spark plugs clean and set magneto points. The "Impulse Magneto" will 'Clack' when cranking slowly.

I had a Major, and I helped a friend restore his. These old kero powered machines are quite cantankerous and definitely not always easy to start, and they are a big heavy engine to turn over. One must switch from gasoline to kero at just the right moment, as they will not start on kero and they will not run continuously on gasoline (unless you take the hot box off). But unlike car engines they are very safe to crank-handle start due to the automatic retard in the impulse magneto, which delivers a string spark even at very low cranking speed. Cranking by means of another machine turning the power take-off pulley, as shown here is the best way to start a restored or especially cantankerous Fordson engine until you sort out all its troubles.
