Very nice backdrop of the town and surrounds towards the end of the video. Tractors like this make one appreciate the ease of starting and operating a modern tractor compared to what it was often like up to about the mid-60s.

That's one beautiful tractor. I love old tractors. Never heard about this one till today. I'm a fan of the old John Deere's. My dad owned a John Deere Model B when I was a kid. It was a blast to drive. I will be looking up more info on this one when I'm done here. Thanks for posting this beauty. Take care.

That is not a John Deere that is a field marshal made at Gainsborough in the UK possibly during or just after the Second World War true most of our best machinery is now made in Germany this is one of the bits of machinery that helped to bring them down

I grew up in the countryside in the UK early 1950s. We called these pom pom tractors, for obvious reasons. Our farmers were not dressed like that guy. Good to see the tractor in such condition . I never saw them clean!

6 litre single cylinder aligned fore and aft. Hence the reason they rock back and forth at idle. The cartridge is the wimp's way of starting them. Hand cranking gives you a fine work out if they decide they don't want to play

My father had these as threshing sets in the 40’s and early 50’s the only difference was they were the “Contractors” model with sprags and a winch lovely pop -pop sound brings back memories.

Had one exactly like this one in the video in a tea garden here in The Dooars (Debpara Tea Estate) way back in the early 1980s. Saw it being started up and driven sometimes because it was already a vintage tractor by then and Messy Ferguson, Escorts and Ford tractors were already being used by then.
@peejaygeee4 жыл бұрын
These tractors were used in uk in the fifties for hauling and belt driving threshing machinery on farms by contractors replacing steam engines that had done the job for years. The cartridge start was rarely used other than in cold weather. Starting was quite simple. The threaded tee piece at the front would be removed and a tightly rolled piece of special slow burning paper fitted in the end as shown. Lit with a match and while smouldering screwed back into place. Then a decompressor lever with a tapered wheel would be raised and lifted into a groove in the flywheel. This spiral groove allowed the operator having placed the starting handle in the wheel to turn the engine over approx three turns allowing the decompressor lever to drop off at the correct point for starting. The whole process took about two minutes, they rarely failed to start. Anyway cartridges were expensive. Once warm the tractor could be started easily by just putting decompressor in groove and briskly turning starting handle. All in a minute or so. The tractors were ok for farm work requiring haulage like ploughing, harrowing and cultivation but not really much use for other farm work. Nice restoration though but try starting with the handle as they are designed to do it is quite easy.

Just taking the old tractor for a Sunday drive, actually it looks modern, punched above her weight in the day I would expect. Fully airconditioned also at no extra costs, can't be bad:).
@robwilde8553 жыл бұрын
They certainly did punch! The drivers used to say that they were impossible to stall - the wheels just continued to turn and dig up the ground. Similar with all the other single-cylinder tractors of that era and before, in Germany and France mostly, with their massive flywheels.

The start up procedure for that tractor is nothing short of pure comedy. About ten steps, the most bizarre being setting fire to the front of it and then shooting it with a shotgun cartridge...you wouldn't want to be in a hurry ...lol
@crazyfvck4 жыл бұрын
@bluegtturbo It's not that many steps. "Setting fire" to that piece is exactly the same as using a glow plug, just done in a different way.

This way of starting - using a 12-bore cartridge - was only recommended for use in very cold weather. I'm not sure but it may not be very good for the engines to use this method all the time. They're easy enough to start in the conventional way, with a handle - see from 2.40 to 3.40 in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZOZiIRpjLikmZI
