Fordson Major Tractor Oil Change and Fuel Filter

Today we changed the oil, oil filter, and fuel filter on the Fordson Major tractor. We used Rotella oil and Napa filters. We also bled and primed the diesel fuel system. I even threw in a cold start for you guys!

For cold starts you can press the button on the end of the stop linkage on the injector pump and hold the throttle wide open for a better start

Hey Bill, thanks for sharing your informative video. I just picked up a 1959 Fordson major. It runs and drives and has a bucket on the front that all works. So far I have changed the oil and oil filter. It had a Napa Gold 1183 oil filter. And that's all the Napa in town had on hand so I put in a new 1183 but ordered up the 1193. Also getting in the fuel filter that you called out. I assume that this tractor has not been maintained well for a handful of years and am figuring I will be draining and replacing all fluids and greasing all grease points. I have ordered the operators and repair manuals, should be here in a couple weeks. In the meantime, the diesel that is in the tank, could or should I add some sort of additive to help clean things up or not? Thanks in advance!

I use Howes in the winter to prevent gelling issues and just run #2 diesel in the summer. If it gets below zero, I'll mix in #1 diesel to help it. Maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a tank

Lovely tractor, personally I would use an old fashioned straight 30 oil, modern oils have too many additives which could end up causing bore glazing

Not the case, especially with diesels like these. They need to be kept clean. Sludge and particles in the engine would do a lot of damage and cause premature wear. Modern oils, specifically higher quality oils will help old engines last long if used correctly. Straight 30 was not even recommended for this tractors engine 50yrs ago. Thanks for watching.

Bill The Tractor Man well of course it's your choice, but the operators handbook for my 63 super says 30HD, 20HD, 10HD for progressively colder climates. I'm in UK, maybe export market was different. Whatever you use, enjoy the tractor!

@@s1914 interesting, I will look at my manual again. I do plan on plowing with my tractor soon, I bought a 3 bottom mounted plow for it. On a side note, Ford did change specifications at some point on the transmission and rear end, from gear oil to a lighter oil. Possibly my newer manual has the engine oil updated as well.

Great video, I have a Fordson power major with a loader. I need to change oil and fuel filter on it this spring. Have you changed the hydraulic fluid yet on your tractor?

I will be this spring. The previous owner changed the fluid but put a really light hydraulic oil in it. The hydraulic pump is in the rear end and shares oil with the differential. Mine holds like 10 gallons of oil I think.

The manual calls for 80w gear oil, however I seen a service bulletin from Ford to use 30w engine oil. I am not sure yet. Was planning on doing more research.

That's a nice tractor you have. How many quarts does the transmission take?

I put straight 40wt diesel engine oil in mine. Ford came out with a service bulletin in the 60s because gear oil was too heavy for cold climates

I changed the fuel filter on my fordson recently. I'm having a tough time getting fuel primed up to the injectors. Could you explain what you did to bleed the hole fuel system?

I first bled the air out of the filter housing, then started the tractor. I then bled the air out of the line before the pump. I started the tractor and it stalled. I loosened the lines on the injectors and cranked the engine until all 4 produced fuel. Tightened them up and started the tractor. It took a moment for the tractor to run even but it did quickly. @@BillTheTractorMan inside the filter housing, was there a smaller spacer with a smaller O-ring that went right on top of your quark spacer?

@@amjorgy1 the spacers go one the bottom, the housing side of the filter. Different filter housings were used and some were replaced by owners after the years so I cant say exactly which spacers to use.

Hi Bill, ordered oil filters for my major and they were too long. Looks like the oil filter is about 5 5/8ths. This one barley fits in the case. Somehow lost the gasket in the process of taking the old one out. We put a new gasket on and put the old filter back in until getting the napa 1193. Started the engine up and oil leakes big time from the filter. Tried tightening and no luck. Any thoughts? Thanks. -Sam

The rubber O-Rings are a pain in the butt. You have to make sure they get exactly into their groove and even then on the backside they can be a pain. I use a small pick to guide the O-Ring as the housing comes in contact with it. Make sure you lube the O-Ring.

Interesting. I have to say I prefer this one over the John deere I had. That one was built into the underside of the engine and I had to lay on the ground. This one I can do from the side sitting on a stool.
