You can go another 30,000 km more than 18,000 km. The recommendation is 30,000 - 35,000 miles ...so convert that to kilometers and that's 48,280 - 56,327 km. It's cheap insurance, sure, but unless you're towing and hauling a lot, 48,000 - 56,000 km should be fine.

ALWAYS tell your viewers to remove the fill plug first then remove the drain plug. If you can not remove the fill plug then you will be towing it to the service center to have the fill plug removed, or driving it and damaging the PTU because you drove it without any fluid. Other than that, another awesome video Brian!

I have heard this comment before but in all my years of working on vehicles in the rust belt of America I have never ever had this concern. Do you see this often or something? The thread are NPT and some are NPTF so it's a very tight seal and they never corrode.
@TechnicalLee2 жыл бұрын
@@FordTechMakuloco I usually have to crack the PTU fill and drain plugs on the previous gen Escapes with an 18" breaker bar even when they were properly torqued the last time. The salt corrosion locks the first set of threads on the outside every time. Makes me nervous so I second the advice of cracking the fill plug first. Stripping the fill plug could be an issue if bit slips out due to the amount of torque involved. The transmission level plug is another bad one, it took 150+ ft lbs to crack one open last time. Thread sealant may help stop corrosion but I didn't see that mentioned in the service manual, only on the 6F35 drain plug.

Thanks FordTechMakuloco for the inside view of the PTU and showing where the fill and drain ports are. I was thinking that was the drain port on the bottom, but couldn't find the fill port. I will remove the fill port plug first tho. My 22' Maverick has the exact same design of PTU and just over 5,000 miles so very soon I'll be just making sure they added the correct amount of 75w - 140 ..not draining anything. When I first got the chance to check the tire pressures, I found the factory had them over-filled to 44psi (the maximum pressure on the sidewalls). It's a trucklet but still rides a lot softer at the correct 35psi cold pressure. So knowing these trucklets were rushed together makes me want to check those expensive components.

Is this the same PTU as the 2021 Ford EcoSport SE? If not, then do they both at least have the same size drain bolts and torque specs? I could've sworn I saw 44ftlbs tight for the drain bolt of the EcoSport. I want to get it right. Bought a small torque wrench with 1/4 drive, so I'll need an adapter for sure. Also, is there a drain bolt for the rear differential? I don't see one on mine. I only see a fill plug. I'd like to switch to a synthetic for that. Just got a 500cc vacumn pump in case it needs to be taken out through the fill plug. I have plans for this EcoSport, such as getting it on jack stands and spraying the crap out of everything with Fluid Film to fight rust here in MI. Inside the door jambs...everything. One more question: can a 3 ton floor jack lift the entire front end by the middle of the subframe? It looks really sturdy. Because I need to place the jack stands under the pinch welds. Want some rubber jack stand adapters that fit SUV size 6 ton stands for pinch welds. I don't want to damage them...or anything else. I changed my own oil for first time ever, and want to do a little more. Oil filter was so tight, it took everything in me to take it off. Someone sabatoged it to be that impossibly tight. Probably to keep people from doing it themselves.

the older generations of escapes had it even worse. They were not water cooled, ran next to the exhaust and were tucked up away from air flow. Also they only had a fill port so if you didn't have much means to get sludge that inevitably formed out.
@xnotx23 жыл бұрын
Previous designs had a tendency to degrade the oil super fast, they got really hot then it destroyed the gears and bearings. If i drove a heavy vehicle with a PTO, I'd probably change the oil every year. Could probably be extended if it looked ok every year, maybe do 2 years.
@thehawk053 жыл бұрын
The issue is the PTU doesn’t hold a lot of fluid so it doesn’t take as long to degrade. The older design PTUs are even worse (Edge, Explorer, Taurus, Flex, etc) On those cars the PTU is close to the hot exhaust and hold less than a quart of fluid. Even on a car that sees low mileage the fluid will be black in a year and turns to sludge quickly if you don’t stay on top of it. And most of those units don’t have a drain plug to change it and are listed as “lifetime filled” in the owners manual. We have a 2016 Flex AWD. I drilled and tapped the PTU to install a drain plug and I change the fluid every year. Overkill? Perhaps.......but fluid is cheap compared to replacing a PTU
