They used mild steel sheeting and riveted it on for strength and so the torps didn't damage the boat when launched. So yes there will be a small bit of metalwork.

You will be waiting a while. Although I am just about to complete the Revell kit, I don’t plan to build either the Fore or Airfix for a few years yet. Have too much else to clear in my WIP box.

Thanks Dutch Dave. Each of the 3 kits have their strengths and weaknesses plus the old Airfix kit has a nostalgic charm for me. The Revell is the Momma Bear kit, not too hot, not too cold, just right for most builders with a good balance of detail, but easily built. The crown goes to this Fore kit, but with the warning it’s just not for the beginner.

I think they will, as I noted in the hull plastic removal step, you only have that extra plastic if you want to build an S-100

A good review. To sand a straight or flat surface I use a large sheet of abrasive placed on a flat glass plate and carefully move the part being sanded over that.

You would still have trouble with over-sanding the very thin and soft edges of that deck. My sanding block is hard, flat and firm but it was already taking plastic off around the sprue join, not just the protruding stub.

Well best will be relative to your skills, and knowledge of building boats. This kit is quite complex and will require a few other boats under your belt first to get the best results. The Revell kit is an easy build for anyone, but can be super detailed by an experienced modeller. Both will come up nicely and be a great display models.

It does have so many clever and unique features, which give you scope to set the model up anyway you like, without needing to scratch build or buy any additional aftermarket.

Its a very nice kit. It looks like they will release without the etch at some point as well. It'll be interesting to see you build it and expecially what camo pattern you choose !

Thanks Nick. Going by other ship manufacturers from China, I doubt they would drop the PE. No advantage to them as the cost of making PE would be marginal in the long run, and they would be losing money to drop the price point on a non PE kit. Anyway, as I showed, you don’t need to use it.

Awesome review. Interesting historical note: While s-boots were able to carry a full compliment of six torpedoes, most did not as the time it took to reload wasn't compatible with hit-and-run tactics employed. So four or even just two is more normal. but not as badass.

Fore hmm always good to see more available! Good the torpedo hatches are opened up! I never thought I'd do another 1.72 again from revell but this FORE reminds me of Takom I might try find one sometime! 👍 i would suggest working on a revell one first for a beginner they won't want to touch another one again haha! we got an email in work yesterday Heller have brought out a 1.16 stug ausf G with the shurtzin and it says we don't have access to Das werk but stugs 1.16s are like Busses non for ages and they all come at the same time! Trumpeter have a new 1.16 coming to that I think it is the same kit as this new Heller kit but atleast that's 3 new 1.16 stugs this month haha!

Very good kit review indeed Harry, the points about the rivets on the hull are interesting. Have you found anything about that by now?

Thanks Michael. Yes we found the truth. Both my further research and with help from the community came up with evidence for riveting on the cover of the torpedo tubes. It was apparently made of mild steel / aluminium. Close up photos clearly show the rivets, but they are far more subtle than the kits moulding and certainly will not have panel shading or need to be picked out with a heavy pin wash. Like on fast aircraft, the rivets are mostly flush and when painted over are hardly seen. But yes, they were there as per Fore’s hull parts. Fore got it right, but the person who made the display model on the side of the kit box got it wrong.

I think they were trying to say their models were “in front” from the prefix “fore”. Just typical Asian use of an English word believing they know what it means, but yes, not understanding the golfing reference of “heads up” incoming!
