Just wondering, why still bother with the cord between the deadeyes and not include that in the 3d print too.

Too hard to 3D print as three fine lines are low and 3 more cross over above. The print as is with deadeyes in place will be so easy to rig with a big mouth beading needle, just as I have shown with my Dead Runs.

Good on you Cos. Still needs some tweaking to get the hole sizes correct on the loops, but the concept works. I am so chuffed.

I just hope it helps someone who was struggling with the idea of rigging a small ship model, I enjoy rigging with cordage, but not everyone does.

@@HarryHoudiniModels Good work my friend, these days I predominantly make 7mm model railway stuff, but if I get my Flower Class Corvette, Vosper MTB and Pibber built, I'd love to have a go with a proper ship. 🙏🙏🤞🤞👍👍😊😊

Ingenious .... and very cool. Solving problerms I didn't know existed, but now I know I want to go buy an Airfix ship kit and have a go too! With patience and these cunning stunts mastered, I could build a ship that looks wooden without all that sawdust and plank bending.

Those Rat-Lines are ingenious! I look forward to the next episode with the complete printed rats, deadeyes, and chain links. 👍🏻 Are you going to be taking requests/commissions?!! I'd love a set to go with a 1970s Airfix HMS Victory (whatever scale that was....some say 1/96, others claim 1/100!!). Brilliant work though Harry 😀

It is a complex process that took me ages to work out, so won’t be revealing my secrets. Just to say I used both sketch and solid object editing all in one plane to achieve the result.

The second option, with the shrouds and chains on the same sprue, shows promise, Harry! Just rig up the dead eyes and fling it on the model! Job done. Also like the fact there was a little texturing going on too, not just plain plastic.

Just print it with the dead eyes all ready in the loops, and drill the holes as needed then paint.

If and when I get a multi filament with auto switching 3D printer, like the new Creality K2 or Bambu Labs X1C then I will print the deadeyes in place pre coloured. The holes are already in the print file, but just like wooden deadeyes you need to quickly run a drill bit through them to remove any snags.

So if your 3d priting the rat lines etc can you also 3d print the dead run lines as well? If you know what I mean. One 3d print of all the rigging for each mast?
@HarryHoudiniModels
@HarryHoudiniModels 4 күн бұрын
That seems easy but it is very difficult as lines in mid air need filament supports, but the 0.3mm channel lines are too fine to have supports holding them up that you will want to cut away later. However the running of the channel lines with cordage is fast and easy in my Dead Runs, so should be the same in this Rat Run. I will show this is a follow up video soon.
@philmitchell8109
@philmitchell8109 3 күн бұрын
@@HarryHoudiniModels I see your point but what if you just make the channel lines solid? How much is visible between the dead eyes? If they are painted black and it's say a millimeter which channel lines paintes brown or a light colour the gap would be almost invisible. Just thinking about something very simple for those of us who have never rigged a ship before, I have the airfix Victory that I'm thinking of.
@HarryHoudiniModels
@HarryHoudiniModels 2 күн бұрын
That’s why I invented the Dead Run. Click your deadeyes in the holes and thread the cotton… it is so easy. The Rat Run should work the same. Attempting to 3D print the fine 0.3mm lines between deadeyes (channels) and have them not break between deadeyes would be a nightmare. I only achieve it in the Ratlines because the vertical shrouds are twice as thick and the whole thing is printed in a grid surrounded by very thick borders. These are the limitations of 3D printing. But rigging the channels between the deadeyes is so simple with my tools. Easier than knitting!

Hello Captain Harry. Mmmm, Not mistakes, its a Prototype, -and it works. The first run through watching you individually separate the "deadeyes" from the setup plate gave me an idea. Put the deadeyes into the plate, set up the ropes. When installed, offer the plate over the hoops on the rat runs, a second plate now with push pins sits over the deadeyes and you gently push down on the plate pushing all the deadeyes into the hoops. THEN, you go and re-invent the whole thing as a single 3D print.... brilliant, -why did i over think this ? Nice one Harry, you did good 👍👍👍, 🙃🫠😉 🇰🇷🇦🇺.

Great comparison video Harry! I'm like you, love the sailing ship kits and wish that manufacturers would produce more of them. How does the Revell kit of the Wasa compare to these two kits, I know that they're in different scales. Do you have any opinion on Revell's re-issue of the HMS Beagle? Some people claim that it's just a reboxing of their Bounty kit. How do I go about ordering your jigs for dead eyes and ratlines? Tom S.
@HarryHoudiniModels
@HarryHoudiniModels 3 күн бұрын
The Revell Victory is about the same size as Airfix kit. Old sailing ship models were pretty much box scale, so the quoted 1/180 is dubious. Revells kit in 1/220 scale has open cannon ports with interior decks to mount cannons on. I would say it is a cleaner less flashy moulding than the half century worn out one from Airfix. Although Germans making British warships just doesn’t seem right! LOL Yes the Beagle by Revell is just a cut and shut version of the Bounty. Same kit with a raised quarter deck. The masts and basic hull shape are identical. However as the Beagle was a smaller ship than the Bounty they had to fudge the scale to their regular 1/96 as opposed to the Bounty’s 1/110.
