I see interesting points in the comment section about diversity and its relation to culture. As an American (and thus as one who lacks any notion of ties to my nation's history) I used to not consider the consequences of immigration in any other light besides as is natural; people come and go, cultures change. But I can really see the arguments against mass immigration; it creates a distance between people and their country and it effectively dilutes the culture and history of a country. Whatever else be said, it is rather clear that mass immigration and globalization has consequences that rightfully deserve our attention.

Ironically, in part it's because of mass immigration and "people come and go" that you lack any notion of your nation's history. It's because of globalization and the destruction of the traditional family unit that we've slowly lost our culture and our traditions as Americans. Our culture may be a mash of different European traditions but nonetheless it is our own.

Hi my brothers Anglo-Saxons is the true name of the English people! after 1066, England was not the same, during the Norman occupation! despite that, England has not died, The Anglo-Saxons are still alive is the modern English people! in their DNA says it, but also shares DNA with the Norse Danish (Vikings) we remember that the Anglo-Saxon and the Norse was so similar, are Germanic naturally and blood ,the father of modern English was the Old English, the English language evolved but always with the Anglo-Saxon structure...and has inlfuence of the norse! I also am against immigration, close the borders of Europe, all of you have the power to do it, the glorious English people keep the fight for his country, the English mythology is so rich and beautiful!They must to be proud of their ancestors who were the fathers of this nation!...Long live to England!! I'm almost ashamed that a Mexican knows more about my culture than I do XD I'm not pro open door immigration but I'm also don't want us to shut the doors. I want us to just get out of the European Union which has stripped us of our identity and democracy and freedom to make our own decisions. Then we can have a vetting system for all migrants. Btw I have a lot of Spanish blood in me so we have some slight things sort of in common :P

@DavyTom71 - Exactly! The English had one of the most advanced cultures, the oldest vernacular literature,and one of the richest economies in Northern Europe- which is why it was such a tempting target. The Normans gave us....... advanced TAX collecting, to fund foreign wars. Norman lords invaded Wales,Ireland,and Scotland, not to mention the problem in France(and the Crusades)- but who's to blame? Ah yes ,the English!

The exact numbers are debated, but archaeological evidence does seem to suggest that the old Romano-British population was not simply replaced wholesale by Germanic newcomers as once believed. Rather, the peoples we call the Angles, Saxons and Jutes took over political and military control of what became England and the older population was simply assimilated into the culture of their new rulers. In effect, the descendants of the Romano-British came to think of themselves as Anglo-Saxons.
@MrCutsteel4 жыл бұрын
@Danny M To be honest I'm not sure if it's even possible at the genetic level to tell 'Germanic' from 'Viking' or 'Norman'. Denmark and Saxony are practically next door to each other and I cant see as there would be much if any genetic difference. 'Norsemen', 'Vikings', 'Saxons' (and for that matter maybe even 'Celts') are probably pretty much indistinguishable at a genetic level. They are all northern European peoples and as such they are likely to be largely homogeneous. The archaeology though does seem to suggest a gradual mixing of successive waves of culturally (if not genetically) distinct newcomers with the pre-existing population rather than wholesale replacement as was once believed. So yes, I think it's fair to say that the English are almost certainly a mix of 'Celtic' peoples with later arrivals, but I don't think we can necessarily say what percentage are ' Saxon' and what percentage are 'Viking' because I can't see the genetics being distinguishable between the two; they are both essentially 'Germanic'.

From what I've found for a great many words you already know the base meaning. There are scads of A/S books with real, useable words. If you've studied Latin or Greek you know how to decline a noun & conjugate verbs. I have been following a sanskrit grammar & the biggest problem is the devanagri script. Don't forget that there are the British Isles regardless of the political entities that have existed within. The Saxons initially had numerous kingdoms (I believe). England is derived from an Angle term. And within the last 1000 or so years the 'races' have mixed. Being British and being English are equally political.
