I'm trying something similar. I'm growing Fissidens fontanus on pieces of coconut hull. I bought a coconut at the grocery store, picked off the excess hair, and broke it up. Even though the coconut is hard as a rock it's porous enough to wick up the moisture and nutrients from the substrate and give the moss something to latch onto. I didn't have worm castings on hand (although they are a great fertilizer) so I'm using peat with fertilizer added. I just put it all in a plastic shoe box from the $1 store and topped it with Press-n-Seal. Since it's winter it's too cold to put the box in a window so I'm using a small LED light. This is the first time I've tried this and I'm only a couple weeks in. I hope mine turn out as well as yours.

That's great. I have some melting dwarf hair grass covered with algae. I am going to give this a go. I understand most of our aquatic plans are grown hydroponically anyway.

I'm growing Bacopa emersed and slightly submerged so that I can use it in a riparium in the near future....have it in a large glass jar with 3 inches of soil from my vegetable patch down bottom and a few inches of water from my goldfish tank....they are doing really well.

Great video! Super helpful. But you are not using just earthworm castings. You are using Earthworm castings "blend". The Black Gold brand uses other things besides earthworm castings in that particular product.
@cjday5737 жыл бұрын
another bonus is that most plants grow faster emersed than submerged, so you can take a small sample, or a tissue culture, grow it out quickly, so then you have more to plant, or if the plant doesn't like the aquarium you put it in or dies, you still have some emersed to fall back on. works great for testing new plants without having to buy multiple times.
@sharirHariparsad2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, plus you can store rare plants that you are not expert enough to care for now and use it later when you can afford to have a better setup or gain the experience

Are you not worried about how the plants will transition from emersed to submerged i.e. melt? Or are these plants you're using well-suited for this change?
@AQUAPROS7 жыл бұрын
+Green Thumb Aquariums by growing them out in the tub the glosso should develope a good root system, it will help it transition when put in a full aquarium. Thats the idea at least lol
@naledilorna7 жыл бұрын
I like that thinking! Would it require the full NFT set-up? Or could you do a scaled down simplified version preferably that didn't take up much space? Do you know where I could find more info on this, or the best terms to look up (beyond NFT hydro)? I'd like to see the technique in action and the 'air bubbling' concept.
@andrewmorphas98356 жыл бұрын
they wont melt. aquatic plants are capable of anaerobic and aerobic breathing.
@urbansk8r2315 жыл бұрын
Andrew Morphas, I think what Geen Thumb means, is that when plants make the transition from emersed to submerged growth - the emersed leaves melt back and the new growth will be submerged growth and via versa

@robbyjones94897 жыл бұрын
Addison Rogers Use strong lighting, and if the plant gets too tall, propagate it and fill in empty spaces. Trim the plants short, and they will focus their energy on growing more horizontally.

@robbyjones94897 жыл бұрын
amitanshu mahapatra probably, Ludwigia is pretty hardy.
@dmitriysirota78406 жыл бұрын
Not exactly.. stem plants will transition back to their emersed states, and then the leaves will melt when you submerge them again. Ludwigia grows quickly inside an aquarium anyway, if you give it proper light and CO2, so the best bet is to do research on proper trimming, and you'll wind up with more ludwigia than you can handle.

Just a question, which is more easier to keep and grow? Dwarf hairgrass or dwarf baby tears?
@dmitriysirota78406 жыл бұрын
hairgrass for sure. Baby tears are basically a micro stem plant and they take longer to root and spread, as opposed to hairgrass that sends out runners. if you're growing emersed though, you can safely go with the baby tears, and you'll wind up with a solid amount quickly

Awesome to know moving forward. I saw in your one video, that your organic potting soil had perlite in it. Did you ever have any issues with perlite? I read not to use soil with perlite, due to it wanting to float to the top of the tank. but this is after I already used it. Other then it floating to the top, will perlite harm the tank in any other way? Since these are already set up with a cap, planted and all, is it really worth taking it apart and restarting?

But what is the point if you don't put in aquarium? Isn't suppose to be in the aquarium hairgrass? If you grow it outside, then when you plant it inside it won't make algae? I don't see any benefit why would you remove from tank, grow it outside, then what? Put back in aquarium and the algae won't be there anymore? Or algae will get scared away because the plant is bigger? Sorry but i can't help myself, but this video is totally non-sense.
