During the busy holiday season, it’s hard to find time to spend with our horses-especially when winter weather doesn’t help! If you’ve got a new horse, a great way to start building trust is with Light to the Core techniques from The Masterson Method. These subtle but powerful techniques can help you learn to read your horse’s responses, sensitivity to touch, and areas of tension in his body.
When your horse realizes you’re paying attention to his responses and adjusting your touch to keep him below the bracing threshold, he’ll start to relax and trust you more. It’s the perfect starting point for building a strong connection.
In this video, our Light to the Core Instructor Lori Hoppe demonstrates the *Forehead Hold Technique*. Here’s how to try it:
1️⃣ Hold the halter gently with one hand and place the palm of your other hand lightly on the center of your horse’s forehead.
2️⃣ Use very light pressure (Egg Yolk at most). Then relax your hand and, as if moving paper, softly shift your hand toward his poll.
3️⃣ Watch for subtle responses like softening or closing eyes, or the head lowering slightly.
4️⃣ When you notice a response, pause and stay to see what happens.
5️⃣ If your horse fusses, soften your hand and wait until he releases tension.
