Eating with your hands is still practiced in India but it's digusting to dip one's hands into a bowl of curry. The curry is poured unto the plate with the pieces of solid food and then the hand is used to mix it with the rice. Nobody frigging dips their hand in hot curry sauce like that. Yeck. We just spoon some of it onto our plates, either on the side or on top of the rice/bread and then eat with our hands. But there are plenty of Indians who eat rice with cutlery too so dw about that. You can use cutlery if that's how you're comfortable.

Its just for the purpose of making it less messy some people in cultures are taught to be as less messy like with the ramen example if around others slurping is looked down upon. I friends who are of eastern and western and some mixed sometimes when go to eat with more western culture of family have to change habits compared to eastern. For the fact that some people don't want as much food in there mouth because might be to much. I personally enjoy not cutting but sometimes can be very annoying when eating pasta and u get a long pasta just dangling and around others can be seen as ill mannered.

I am an Indian. Indian food varies a LOT between its different regions & its eaten differently in each of them. Eating rice & curry using hand is a norm in Southern states of India, while in Northern states they typically use a spoon (not fork). Naans, rotis, parathas are typically eaten with hand by making bite sized scoops & filling them with curry. The curry itself is eaten typically with a spoon.

Royal Tiger No, that's not true. When it comes to poverty, there is no North-South divide. There is rural vs urban divide in both North & South, urban is generally more prosperous & educated (even though urban areas may have pockets of slums). Eating with spoon vs hands is more of cultural thing when it comes to North vs South. Even highly educated millionaires in the South would eat with their hands (of course after washing their hands), since that's how their traditional food is supposed to be eaten. And, why should they ape the North or the Western world & get rid of their tradition?

Sushi chefs actually say to use your hands, it's just that Japanese are used to chopsticks and it's mainly up to your preference. You're not supposed to let the sushi fall apart, which can be hard when picking it up with chopsticks, and when dipping it in sauce. Nelson Mandela haha I think chopsticks are useful because they give you more precision than using a fork, but sometimes it has its limits. I didn't have any forks so I tried cutting a tonkatsu with chopsticks to hold it down instead of a fork and boy that was a mess. and like you said, Asian food is suited to be eaten with chopsticks so I understand if the western culture is not used to using chopsticks (imagine slurping spaghetti down with chopsticks!!). I moved to US few years ago and I was actually pleasantly surprised to find out that a lot of western people were able to use chopsticks without any learning!

In rich hoity-toity American cultures, there’s a specific fork for specific dishes, such as a salad fork, or main dish fork. Rich kids are sometimes required to take etiquette lessons. My mother has a hard time twirling her fork. Not everyone has such great fine motor skills or is used to certain types of muscle movements (think people being unable to make certain sounds from other languages, or even their own native tongue). May or may not also be age related. But anyway, good to at least try to learn to respect other people's cultures if you are going to eat their food and engage in their rituals and traditions. The United States is filled with cultural appropriation. Sure, with all the violence and hate in the world we think it's not that significant, but I think most people are capable of caring about different things, depending what they want to make time for.
