The crew of HMS Sheffield sang "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" whilst sitting in lifeboats after their ship was sunk in Falklands War. It was also sung at Graham Chapman's funeral. Graham Chapman - who plays Brian - was actually a doctor (he was fully registered on the medical register).

This movie was widely attacked by the Catholic church as well as the Church of England (and different Christian churches and their followers around the world, notably - though not surprisingly - in the U.S.A.) for being blasphemous. There was even a debate on TV where Monty Python had to defend the movie against the clergy. But, as they (Monty Python) rightly pointed out, the movie couldn't really be blasphemous since it wasn't about Jesus - it was about Brian. And Jesus is only in one scene at the beginning when he's preaching and the people at the back can't hear what he's saying. It's a brilliant movie with so many layers of satire and criticism of both religion and politics. A true classic!

Classic. Thanks for the reaction. Thankfully my Dad showed me Monty Python early in my life. These movies and sketches never get old. Some fun facts: George Harrison, the former member of the Beatles and a long-time Python fan, arranged financing for Life of Brian through the formation of his HandMade Films company. And why does a lot in the movie look so good and accurate? The film was shot on location in Monastir, Tunisia, which allowed the production to reuse sets from Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth (1977).

The idea for "Life of Brian" came in Amsterdam in 1976. The script was written in Barbados during Christmas in 1977. The actual movie was then filmed in Tunisia in 1978, where the simple production reused costumes and set pieces after an actual movie about Jesus.

@eisco6 күн бұрын
As not everybody is native English, maybe let’s also try to explain what a leper is. The word leper was used to refer to someone who suffered from leprosy, a bacterial illness that affects the nerves, skin, and respiratory tract. Those people were bound to become beggars. The decease was anything but treatable back then. Except for by a miracle by Jesus of course 😏

22:34 You know, the Roman guards laughing weren't scripted, the actors were actually trying their best to hold their laugh and some moments and lines of the scene were improvised, especially on the line when Pilatus says BD's wife name "Inocontinentia Buttocks" that took everyone by surprise and started laughing their asses off, especially the crew behind the cameras which are the ones you can hear afterwards..

Thank you girls for a great reaction. It was very difficult to get this film made. The Monty Python team approached a number of film studios but none of them were interested in financing the film. Finally, George Harrison (formerly of the band The Beatles) got hold of the script and agreed to finance the film with a newly created company. So we really have to thank George Harrison for allowing this film to be made. Oh, and in ancient Rome, they had an emperor rather than a king. Yea it's funny how he pronounces the "R!"

The funny thing with the Judahite/Judean freedom fighter "Loretta" is that when the movie was conceived, the whole gender-bender thing was actually way behind the times, while today ppl consider the scene to be way ahead. The "times" back then being Weimar Germany and Berlin in particular. The first "transgender" clinic was founded there by two actual jews (not Judeans): Magnus Hirschfeld and Arthur Kronfeld. At their "Institut für S3xualwissenschaft" the first MtF surgeries were performed (most famous patient died after complications). The institute advocated for "s3xual liberation", transvestism (term coined by Hirschfeld who was gäy), child pr0stitution & ped0philia among many other societal blessings. A close friend, Harry Benjamin (who was also a jew, and a ped0phile) went on to found the "Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association", which later became the WPATH.

I've seen a couple reactions to this film, by people who were not raised Christian, so they're largely unfamiliar with some of the moments and allegory and such. Christianity is enough of world popular culture that even people who weren't raised in the religion know at least something about it, some of the "highlights" so to speak, but they don't know all the details. But they still enjoy this movie, just because it's so silly and the humor is based on more or less universal examples of miscommunication, misdirection, human nature, and even plain old slapstick. Monty Python's work exists on so many levels, that almost everyone can find something to enjoy about them. "Life of Brian" has so many references to Biblical stories, religious and political history, from ancient days as well as today. "...Holy Grail" has so many references to Arthurian legend, British and European history, politics, etc. Yet even those who are unfamiliar with those deeper historical references can enjoy those films on their own level. That's the genius of the Monty Python boys' writing. That's not to say their brand of humor is *everyone's* cup of tea; different people have different senses of humor, and that's okay. But many people can enjoy some Python on their own level, and it brings different people together. . [Mel Brooks also tends to write on many levels- if you've seen the source material of his parody movies they're super funny, packed solid with winks and references to the original. But even if you haven't seen "Frankenstein" or "Star Wars" or "Prince of Thieves" you can enjoy "Young Frankenstein" and "Spaceballs" and "Men in Tights" because they're just plain funny. "Weird Al" Yankovic writes his song parodies (as well as original songs) in such a way that they're funny songs, whether you know the original or not; they work on both levels. Writers who can tell multi-layered jokes and have something for everyone are few; it's a rare gift.]

Hello ladies, great reaction as always. If you look up the 'Monty Python Sings' compilation album on KZbin you'll find 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' and many other great Monty Python songs.

Monty Python had a lot of trouble raising funds for this movie, one major backer dropped out and left them in the lurch. George Harrison of The Beatles came up with the cash to let them film it. One of the reasons for the problem was that financers were trying to cash in on Star Wars success and ploughing money into cheap sci fi movies. Hence the Pythons little sci fi snark thrown in randomly to take the piss.

Thanks for reacting to my favourite film. This is my type of humour. It says a lot about Religion & Politics. Only Monty python could include an Alien section into a Historical Comedy.

At the window scene, it was noted that Graham Chapman's little downstairs 'friend' wasn't looking very Jewish, so this was rectified with a little rubber band rather than the good 'ol Snip Snip.

Peak British humor. In fantasy Discworld by Sir Terry Pratchett is similar. Extremely funny and has great social commentary in his books. One day we might have it on screen until then, if you want to practice the language, it’s one of the best, he was the master of comedy his craft.
