Lou Gramm is not underrated. He never was. When Foreigners debut album came out in 1977. DJs at rock radio stations had the power back then to make or break a band by interview or critiquing their album. DJs were going insane about Lou Gramms vocals, they were estatic about his singing. I remember in 1977 in my area, one rock station from 11:pm to 12:am would introduce rock albums by playing BOTH sides back then the albums were called LPs . CDs didn't exist yet but they played Foreigners debut album and they were a brand new band. I remember the DJ gave information about the band, but man, the DJ talked about Lou Gramm more than the rest of the group because of his singing. He said "With that voice , this band is gonna make a lot of money" . Upon Hearing that , I went out and got the album THAT MONTH and I bought every Foreigner album yes even up to UNUSUAL HEAT (1991) with Johnny Edwards. Yes , Steve Perry is great, but he's not Journeys first singer. Robert Plant is great but back in the 70s and early 80s, some rock journalists were actually hinting Gramm was better, or as one journalist said" Lou Gramm has a voice Robert Plant might envy" a comment review that Lou strongly did NOT like. Lou didn't like singers being put down or himself being compared to others because Lou admired and respected Perry , Robert Plant and other vocalists. But Lou, if anything was not underrated. He wasn't profiled or known for scandals as some rock stars.

Lou Gramm kept the torch alive for soul inflected hard rock singing pioneered by guys like Paul Rodgers and brought it into the radio friendly mainstream, but he still maintained that raw soul passion and power that got somewhat lost with the advent of new wave and synth pop.

between Gramm, Delp, Tyler, and Mercury the 70s had INTENSITY and RANGE covered . . . just brilliant fellas and I for one am so glad all 4 of you took it as seriously as you did, all that great music, of course there are tons more gifted and brilliant vocalists of the day but for radio airplay and song after song these guys were the bee's knees, yea throw Geddy Lee in there too he has a brilliant range and massive catalog as well... guaranteed in the 70's listening to rock radio you could not go one hour without hearing a song form one of these bands, generally 2 or 3 but ya'll who were there know what I am saying, we all cut our teeth to these guys and their super high rich voices .. TYSVM Guys . . . and Gals . . . 🙂
