It depends on the type of mango usually kesar and other mango are eaten after cutting with knife while mangoes like rajapoori, etc are eaten like this as they are mostly used to make mango juice 😊

Their are lots of local and wild varieties of mangoes in india, that are eaten like this way, because it's easy to suck juicy pulp than cutting with knife. Every tradition like eating this type, evolved over times .

I'm from kerala, in our land itself we had 7 different verity of mangotrees are available. Here at least 1000 verity of mangotrees are present in our 10 km radius

There are different types of mangoes in different regions of India, the way you've eaten it is how many people from Uttar Pradesh state of India eat it.. so you've done nothing wrong, it's just perfect and a clean manner to eat mango anywhere anytime without getting your hands sticky
