Looking for Sundanese food in Jakarta, Indonesia? You must try Warung Nasi Alam Sunda. This restaurant brings the idea of a “buffet” to a different level. Our kids love eating fried fish; there were so many varieties of fish to choose from. There were many other options to choose from: chicken, duck, tempeh, tofu, and vegetables. Jonathan even found oxtail soup. You grab a plate and fill in from a variety of prepared meats and veggies. They will cook some items for you there, as well. You can choose from already prepared dishes and from the soup center, too. When we were there it was crowded with people, but there are many seats and the turnover is fast. Anytime you find a restaurant full of people, you know 1) the food must be good, and 2) the food will be fresh. This was our first time here and everyone helped us figure out where to sit, how to order, and how to pay. If you like spicey, don’t forget to try the dower sambal!

We are the Bags Packed Family: Jonathan and Kelly with our three children. We sold our home in Alaska, USA, eight years ago, and headed overseas. We are teachers and found fantastic teaching positions in India. Two years later, we moved to the United Arab Emirates. many of indonesians became the residents of malaysia. now theyre malaysians. but their root is from indonesia. and they also bring in their culture n food there. thats why u can even find nasi padang menus in malaysia. or the javanese pecel n soto. same with singapore. minang people, javanese, sundanese, bugis, acehnese, you can find them in malaysia too. edit: actually it was not "indonesians". back then, there was no nation concept. it was just kingdom, tribal system aka the chiefdom, and also the western powers. acehnese, javanese, sundanese, minangnese, etc "merantau/meranto" to all around southeast asia.

The one you ate with the oxtail was the Sour Soup. It pairs well with the Ikan Teri & Teri Kapas your son got. It isn't meant to be eaten with the oxtail but I'm glad it worked XD. The oxtail uses different kind of broth, the dish with the oxtail is called Sop Buntut which means Tail Soup.

I commend you for ploughing through and going in to this restaurant. Most people (and honestly me too) would have just skipped it the moment i saw that many people. It is refreshing to see that you guys enjoyed it despite the inital chaos! A true testament of the quality of their food! The soup you had was sayur asem I think. The 'potato' was a labu siam (chokoes, a pumpkin variety). The nice crispy skin seems to be salted dried fish cooked in their special sauce (teri kapas), like anchovies but flattened if you will. Very impressive video and as you said, people are super friendly and helpful.

I was born and lived in Jakarta. I would prefer to go to a made-by-order restaurant where you choose first, and then they fry it. So it will be more hygienic, and hot when served. There are quite a number of great Sundanese restaurants in Jakarta and Bandung.

hii... I really love your channel. I love how you're always so respectful with the food you try even when you don't like it, you never act disgusted by any new interesting food. By the way, I know this is a very late comment, but the green bean Mom ate has something called Urap on it, which is basically shredded coconut cooked with a bunch of spices, so that's 100% vegetarian!

I believe there are no international flights from Papua, you have to fly to Jakarta first. So if you plan to visit another country you can time it that you fly from Papua to Jakarta on Saturday. Vlog the Car Free Day on Sunday and fly to another country at night or the next day. Can't wait for your next adventure

Alam Sunda is definitely a good place. As far as I know they have many restaurants that spread around Jabodetabek area (an acronym of Jakarta-Bogor-Depok-Tangerang-Bekasi). The restaurant always busy especially during breakfast, lunch, and dinner time. For people who doesn't like to wait and prefer more hygienic place, I won't recommend this place.

The floss in the veggies (urap) was shredded coconut, not chicken floss. And the crunchy crumbly things the man gave you on the fried fish/chicken was fried batter..

Love your family and your videos. The fish skin might actually be a type of small fish (ikan sepat) that’s salted, dried, and fried. Those are delicious. On minute 3.50, the lady offered “karedok” it’s a Sundanese version of gado-gado but with raw veggies (gado2 uses cooked veggies), like gado2 it’s dressed with peanut sauce but has a different taste. “Dower” on the poster means puffed lips.. so it literally means that the sambal is so spicy that it makes your lips puff. 😄 If you want to have Sundanese food (or food from West Java) you may want to visit Bandung, it’s a 3-4 hour train ride from Gambir Station Jakarta using the express train (I think it’s called Argo Parahyangan). in the vegetable, i bet it's shredded Coconut. Most regular Indonesian vegetable dish rarely use meat or chicken but sometimes there's egg on side unless it's in the hotel restaurant or fancy restaurant they put it as "fusion food and/or innovation". And that crunchy thing; usually from spices and Flour, mostly. Yellow tempeh; usually we marinated with turmeric and some other spices before frying it.

Oxtail and sayur asem is different price. Oxtail has its own price and sayur asem has its own price also. But when counting the total price, the oxtail was not counted. Oxtail soup normally serves on its own not mixed as what you have done. Just a little observation. Have a nice time in Jakarta.

What that lady ate is probably a “serundeng” it’s a shredded coconut and the salty savory ones taste just like soft shredded chicken, it’s a great flavor enhancer for vegan.
