For the longest, growing up I thought my father died of an aneurysm, but my mother finally confessed that I was a child of rape nearly 20 years later. I'll be graduating with my BSN next year and believe providing this kind of care to other victims will be such a rewarding and giving experience within my nursing career. It may just open more doors ... Thanks for this insight!

Sad that she had to dim her light for her husband's embarrassment. The forensic nurse is a skilled professional and one that deserves respect for their service to the community.

I cannot wait to become a forensics nurse. I was drugged and sexually assaulted by a boyfriend that I lived with at the time. And the local hospital forensics nurse basically refused to do a rape kit on me and exam on me because I told her he was my boyfriend. She humiliated me and dehumanized me, and in the end I just walked out and went back to the abuse. I ended up becoming pregnant, because I wasn't given emergency contraceptive and at the time could not afford it on my own and was too humiliated to ask for help. Fast forward a few more weeks when I finally have a better job and am making more money. I had a lot of morning sickness at work, and remember driving to the dollar store across the street on my break to get a pregnancy test which I later took at work. I ended up having to have an abortion, because the man who raped me and had been abusing me for 6 years was cheating on me, and I had gone through his phone and saw he was grooming other young girls the way he had groomed me. I did it all alone. At 19 years old. I finally grew strong enough to part ways with him and began working on getting my life together. I have been in therapy for 5 years, and am back on medication to help with my CPTSD and PTSD that I received from all the trauma I went through. I am a month away from finishing my first year of college, and have recently been accepted into the nursing program at my school, and start the program next month. Because of my negative experience, I intend on becoming the forensic nurse I needed back when my trauma happened to me. It gives me peace that one day I will be able to help those who went through what I went through.
