Forest Floor - How to Take Samples

Dr. Margaret Schmidt (SFU) explains how to sample for humus form description vs. bulk density sampling of the organic horizons. To describe a humus form, it is helpful to have some mineral soil included in your sample, especially since an Ah can be a characteristic horizon of the Mull humus form. Bulk density sampling should include the organic horizons only, so that an estimate of nutrient contents across broader areas can be made.
