@@SuffiReax it's actually a poetic device more common amongst Modernist poets, wherein more innocent literature is alluded to and then defamiliarised so as to drive home a point about a devastating shift from that innocence and from things we take for granted like an idea of stability. Best example would be TS Eliot in The Hollow Men: "This is the way the world ends,/ This is the way the world ends,/ This is the way the world ends/ Not with a bang, but a whimper" which takes the form of nursery rhymes sung in that manner like "Here we go round the mulberry bush" or "This is the way we comb our hair" etc. Side note, not related, but since you mentioned the line "singing songs that nobody wrote" in particular, I've always interpreted the singing in the forest to a chorus everyone knows being that your grand plans for life fail so you fall back onto the paths that people commonly go on, like the idea of creating songs with meaning to them vs creating what the market requires of them, pursuing an artistic career vs getting a stable corporate job, etc. And then the songs that nobody wrote are these social norms which everyone follows but no one can exactly pinpoint where they come from and what's the point to them. (Edit: the name thing I've seen as you not being able to see yourself in the person that you project for others to see, you wear a mask so to speak, you are a completely different person in the way you carry yourself through the world, and then that other persona is the one who has your name, it's as if that person has stolen your identity)

My thoughts on the chorus are this: and I could be wrong. You know how in churches when people are singing, they often raise their hands to God, or the ceiling at least? That's the first part of it. Maybe that resembles trees. Or it could be part of the Forest/ Trees God connection. Also, it is a large group of trees/ worshippers. Part two is that the songs we sing in church are often written by Anonymous- or are so old that no one knows who wrote them... Singing songs that nobody wrote. We'll be on fire with the cleansing fire of the Lord. It could also NOT be about church. I just was trying to figure out the "singing songs that nobody wrote" part one day. I think it's about going to church, my cliqqies! This is my favorite song not from the most recent 3 albums.

For me it's more of a rave in the woods. Nothing religous. College party. Maybe high schoolers, under age. Everyone hands in the air singing songs that nobody wrote (nobody famous, just your Regional at Best band, and yes, they are fire, cause it's a rave and everything sounds better - but it IS TOP and they are fire, even back then, when they were nobody. As the band sees it, these kids are as much the trees, as the trees themselves - hands in the air, trunk, branches, twigs - I can see it, And this song links to Trees- trying to connect to the kid that doesn't click (clique) with TOP - also not religious to me.

After hearing how you interpreted some lines of their songs, I got this realization that the line: "Does it bothers anyone else that someone else has your name?" I felt that Tyler is referring to God having different names in every Religion then, "Down in the forest ... We'll be on fire we'll sing in chorus singing songs that nobody wrote" means: We will be singing our own life's song! that nobody wrote but ourselves! We'll be on fire means we're burn out? these are atleast my POV. Love your vids! I was watching your videos for a while.

The "Forest" is not literaly a forest, is a metaphor, Where the forest is his mind, and the tree that it says _"My treehouse is on fire, but for some reason I smell gas on my hands"_ is that he is hurting his mind, his ideas having bad thoughts ( _I took some food for thought, it might be poisoned_ ). In the part _"Hands held higher, we'll be on fire"_ I don't know if it have a relation, but in *ode to sleep* it says _"I will set my soul on fire"_ as a sign of purification. I love this song, this is one of my favourites of them, And I love your reaction. The next one that you have to do is Glowing Eyes. Please *PD: THE NEW ALBUM IS COMING!*

I think of it as maybe the forest of people. Maybe like at a concert or just gathered together. Also the someone else has your name part makes me personally think of how God has plans for our lives, but that the someone else is the Devil who has plans for you too.

@SuffiReax 3 жыл бұрын
Oh that is a good point. I was immediately thinking of how there can be thousands of Michaels, different people all with the same name. But you are more saying that God has our name (knows who we are) but so does the Devil and that is what bothers Tyler. Does it bother anyone else that the Devil knows who you are. Very interesting
@marcusdonders

Exactly! That's my take anyway. Tyler seems to struggle with those thoughts a lot. I think back to Ode to Sleep where he's pleading with God to tell the demons that He has no plans for his life so they will leave him alone.

this is my favorite off RAB that didn't get held over onto Vessel "singing songs that nobody wrote" - i think he's saying singing songs with a real message and it doesn't matter who wrote it because the message is the most important part of it "does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name" - i think he's meaning we are all supposed to be unique people but there are literally a million other people in the world with the name Tyler here is a very early performance of Tyler and Josh for this song to watch on your own - this is at Ohio State before they were popular anywhere outside Columbus kzbin.info/www/bejne/iH7CgICjjN51pJI

About ""someone else has your name"" > that's a tricky one and people's translation are interesting. I have a theory but doubt I'm correct on this, but what i hear is going through life feeling like you're not the person on the surface, the persona that people see. Like have you ever behaved a surprising way and you say ""that's not me!""? I guess that's why i have that translation... cause i think that alot about moments/actions etc in my life> i think ""that's not me"". Someone else?? I don't know, just a theory..

Tyler has had a lot of trouble in finding his place in the world and what his meaning is. I think that's why he puts emphisis on being bothered that somebody else having his name because it makes him less unique. You also stated that he thought he'd have larger plans and that he didn't have this part of his life planned. I think that he may feel like a nobody and that is what he ment by singing songs that nobody wrote.
