Try rolling down your passenger door window a 1/2 inch. The escaping air will help draw the heat forward. My Dad used to do this in the farm house we heated with wood. At the farthest end of the house he would open a window just a crack

stove should have a cold air intake to do this properly
@mikelincoln8395
@mikelincoln8395 3 жыл бұрын
Also, as warm air, with a high relative humidity, escapes through the small opening, it will be replaced with colder dryer air with a lot lower humidity content, which will heat up quicker and to a higher average temperature. Counter intuitively the average temperature inside should be a little warmer with the window slightly open, because it takes less energy to heat it. Also more healthy, less carbon monoxide, particulates, more oxygen.
@tubatits
@tubatits Жыл бұрын
how does heat escape from a negative pressure condition, that the stove sucking in cabin air for combustion, has created? By not having an exterior cold air intake, the stove is doing opposite of what you wrote. Its drawing cold air INTO the van. Anybody who has grown up with fireplaces or stoves like the one featured can tell you that.

I'd recommend cutting some logs and leaving them somewhere for next winter for you to pick up, even somewhere in the forest, ideally under some cover or roof. Wood doesn't dry that fast, I usually leave mine for 1-2 years. It burns way better, has less smoke and gives warmth more effectively. Just plan ahead and have even a few places where you leave the wood to dry.

You need to add a damper to your stove pipe. I noticed flams coming out of the roof pipe. A damper will give you more control of the burn rate/time.I always added them just above the stove about 6 to 8 inches. That should give you much better control of the burn rate.

@@forestyforest It should be fairly easy to make one. Use a long nail and something just smaller than the inside diameter of your pipe. It will have to be able to withstand the heat. Possibly take a 6 inch and have someone to cut it down to your pipe size. Good luck and stay safe.

When everything fails all will be well because your wood stove will never let you down. Hey with that wetish wood it’s common for it to just have coals and not put out much heat but best to just leave them in and put dry wood on top those coals will burn down.Having a nice ash bed makes any stove burn better. You need a little compartment to stache good dry wood for max btu’s on those cold nights.Just having it warming up by the stove will help a bit. Throw wood on the roof and when you drive it’ll dry it lol As for not heating as well down low what about running some piping like dryer vent from the stove and then just use a couple of in line fans to pump heat to the front? Even little computer fans in the piping would work and wouldn’t draw much power. Great video.

Exactly. Im getting a wood stove installed for a couple of reasons 1) natural heat that relies on nature wood vs propane or electricity 2) ability to cook with it and 3) fire is soothing and some of us have a strong relationship with fire for all is uses. Quickest way to feel secure on a wintry night is sitting on the stove, possibly boiling hot water for cocoa, tea, or water the next day 🙂

Sweet!! you did toasty-warm good with that setup; especially outside !! Just noticed you got that screen protector in to! Birch is the best wood in BC. Burns hot & quick. Can get sappy tho if wet & you dont want fast creosote building up in those pipes; from green birch & suddenly a chimney fire starts. (heated solely by wood for a couple years, living in Parson, BC) You can buy some powdered creosote preventer & a few granules in your fire; will help prevent that. :)

So well done buddy. Digging the chill vibe and it's always interesting to see what kind of field-craftsmanship you are up to, and you always eat well. Nice you have dual-fuel capabilities now. You got options. Safest of travels to you sir.

Foresty as long as you use hard wood in the woodstove you won't have as much creosote build up. Hardwood also smokes much less.

FF, mate how about building a racking to go around your chimney where you could store your cut up logs. Would act as a good heat shield and dry them out.

@@forestyforest you just have to be careful, I've had logs catch on fire after leaving them to dry around/above the wood stove before. Using wood logs as a heat shield might not be the safest in a van haha

nice video, I have heard the hardwood pellets for a pellet stove burn nice & hot and turn into fine ash, and easy to store... may be a good alterative compared to the compressed fire wood.

Interesting, I use hardwood pellets in my biolite cookers, and they are awesome. I combine small branches midway through a cook, everything burns to a nice ash.

I am a new subscriber to your channel and I must admit I am hooked your series and I now will be trying to find a used Quigley and build one myself even though I have a 30ft travel trailer and a Bigfoot slide-in camper 🙄 The Quigley seems to be quite the elusive vehicle here in Alaska. Forest, I am looking forward to more videos!

Last year I installed a tiny wood stove in a OLD 23ft motorhome my little boy and I live in. Sadly the safest roof opening with my tools was the bathroom. We actually did not use it so not a huge loss at present. I am really happy for you. When all else fails it is such a blessing. We live in the same general weather path as you in the mountains. It is 90% of our heat and also a cooking resource. I had to do some serious labor to earn enough to buy it. It was truly worth the knowledge that we could sustain from the resources around us. We have not been mobile so it is nice to see someone transitioning from heat to travel. Good motivation if we get moving again after winter. Thank you for sharing.

Maybe you could plumb the stove to heat a water tank, hot water and possibly a shower??? Luxury. I thought snow chains were adjustable so fit a range of tyre sizes? I would get them. If you get stuck you would definitely wish you had them. Very well filmed this episode. A*.

It's interesting how you van continues to evolve to adapt your needs. The glowing embers coming out of your chimney maybe kind of harsh on the paint of the van's roof.
