This video is so awesome. Real van life! Some of my favorite times were living in my Type II VW vans. Every road trip was a chain of scavenger hunts for parts. I met so many amazing people, and discovered countless old scrap yards and fascinating mom and pop repair shops that I never would have found without my perpetually broken down mini-bus.

Throwing parts at problems without doing diagnostic work is always a waste of money and time. Voltage is controlled by the voltage regulator that’s built into the alternator. The question is why did it start acting up? When dealing with electrical step one is always checking connections, plugs and grounds. From there you check the actuation of said part, for example monitoring voltage with your volt meter while driving. Dash gauges are notoriously not as accurate as a good volt/amp meter. The money wasted on new parts that didn't fix your problems would have paid to have the shift cable replaced. I hate seeing people throw good money away due to not taking the time for simple diagnosis.

I like the big chevy, I would hang onto it. Plus, if you buy another used van it might have problems that need fixed as well. Good to see you got it sorted though, hopefully it doesn't give you anymore grief for a long time 🤞

Don’t go for a Ford. We had terrible issues with our Ford truck. Had to replace the engine 3 years in.

Enjoying your video’s. Just my 2-cents, If you buy a new van, stay with Chevy. Parts will always be available. Strong drivetrain. Get a 2wd, install a locker, and get a Weld-Tech suspension lift. you’ll have a great van for many years to come.

No to Nissan! You want big expensive problems? If you’re van is running volt meter on battery terminals if you’re over 13.2+ volts you’re charging Normally could run as high as as 14.4 + Best of luck

Glad you got the 4wd resolved. I saw some other comments about not relying on ur gauges and testing with a meter. I agree. The gauge cluster has its own ground that could be faulty and causing erroneous readings. I also wanted to point out its a good best practice to replace the tensioner when you replace the belt. Finally tp your point about buying another van and setting it up over time. Seems many of ur issues are related to electrical. Perhaps instead, take your time amd go over the different harnesses...maybe even doing some rewiring, testing continuity, resistance, but most importantly checking, testing, and cleaning all grounds! Wish you the best in whatever path you take! Thank you for sharing all your adventures!

Foresty Forest, you are the best - I know you experience worry and anxiety over the van issues - who wouldn't! But you don't let it consume you but rather seem to 'roll-with-the-punches' and 'roll-up-your-sleeves' and get the work done yourself. Your emotional and mental acuity are impressive and motivating. This whole fix-the-van vid is totally 100% as interesting as your hikes and ski up and summiting big mountains and coming back down them -- oh, and your cooking too! Swearing also helps. As someone else mentioned, i'd move to a pickup truck and find a small piece of land and just build out a cabin or something tiny. There must be reasonable price acreage somewhere in that country that doesn't cost a fortune. Slim potato went that route. I'd imagine when you are 90 years old and still driving around in that GM van might be rough. You might have to build a wheelchair ramp.

To check the ground continuity properly you need to check the resistance. One probe on the battery negative, the other probe on the 3 ground points. If one of them has high residence that could be a problem.

I'd pick the Nissan van over the Ford any day. Especially if it's an older model, but you should be okay even with a newer Nissan as long as you don't get a lot of unnecessary extras.
