Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (known as PFAS) are long-lasting compounds that are showing up in soil, ground water, drinking water sources, even rainfall, and have been linked to cancer, liver damage, thyroid disease, and other ailments. By some estimates, this toxic family of chemicals can be found in the blood of nearly every person on the planet. Correspondent Lee Cowan looks at how the chemicals got here, and talks with families, farmers, and health advocates fighting for clean, safe water.

If there are solutions, they'll usually mention them. But they generally aren't the ones coming up with them... But for the record, the piece _did_ point out that there may be solutions, but we need to demand action from the government and corporations *_now_* to get them implemented on the scale needed or find better solutions. It’s not America- it’s happening in all locations where these factories exist. I saw another documentary where many Dutch workers are sick with cancer over the same chemical types, even through DuPont told them the environment was safe. And even crazier, they are seeing health affects in the Faroe Islands (Atlantic) because the gulf steam carries those Chemicals and food supply has become contaminated, as they mainly eat fish for their main source of food. You would think fish are supposed to be healthy and clean in remote island villages !? But the Gulf Stream carried those chemicals snd it seems to be the children that are having the most effects.

Corporations only pay fines. Humans go to jail. The ability to pay off a fine is significantly lower than the ease and profit that very large corporations rack up by doing harm to the environment. The small guy and end customer pays their price ultimately. Always. Corporation ultimate beneficiary owners should be held liable personally for the actions their corporations do, at least when it comes to environmental damage like this that directly affects the food stock for the world's human and animal populations.

@@donnabaardsen5372 All it requires to fix this nonsense, are instructions from the people delegating their chosen elected officials to clean up this mess. There is a maxim in law that goes like this: The voice of the people is the voice of God. How many people sent a letter of instruction to their elected officials demanding their water resources to be kept clean and clear from all harmful substances? How many are actively demanding through instructions to their elected officials that a new safety standard be adopted as a matter of emergency? No one. You're all going to protest. Water, from its formula weight -18- one would predict it would be a gas at ordinary temperatures & pressures. Ammonia - with a formula weight of 17- is a gas at temperatures as low as minus 33'C. at atmospheric pressure. Hydrogen sulfide,, closely related to water by position in the periodic table & with a formula weight of 34, is a gas at temperatures down to minus 59°C. The fact that water exists as a liquid at all, at ordinary temperatures is something to make one stop and think. Water defys the laws of cold rationality. But leave it to greedy human idiots to add chemicals destroying our Life source is just mind boggling 😡 No living thing can survive without water, I cannot understand this. All those poor people who have dedicated their lives to farming, their payment is some form of cancer, diseased animals and farmland. This is an absolute outrage, how dare they 💔

Water is a very interesting compound, and indeed it should make one stop and think, but it doesn't "defy the laws of cold rationality"! It differs from hydrogen sulfide in that, for example, the latter doesn't have hydrogen bonds (except at very low temperatures). It's bonding is also very different from NH3. When writing about rationality, it is best to approach your subject rationally.

The farmer's final statement illustrates how profound our misunderstanding of how environmental problems have to be handled. Farmers are in their essence alone and they view all problems as mine alone to solve. They don't expect help nor do they ask for it (except for ag subsidies but just mentioning that will get you in a fight). But the mentality of the farmer is if you have a problem it's your responsibility to solve it. That outlook makes them tough and resilient but it also prevents them from understanding how problems are collectively solved. It's a different skill set and this farmer, who by no fault of his own, still blames himself for his farm being contaminated by pfas. He knows it's not his fault but he still feels that it is. He just doesn't get that his personal choices had very little to do with this outcome. Or that there isn't a personal choice that could've prevented this outcome. That fact would shock him if he really internalized the ramifications of it. Environmental problems are a class of problems that can only be solved through collective solutions and that runs counter to deeply held American beliefs in the last 50 years probably longer. We just saw how the lack of using collective action played out with COVID because public health problems fall into this collective solutions class of problems. It didn't go well because we've lost this muscle of using collective action to solve these problems.

Therefore, some problems can be solved by personal choice alone. Market based solutions CAN work in lots of situations, and there's nothing wrong with that. But there does exist some problems that resist solutions using personal choices alone. I'm not sure why the fact that some problems are solved by personal choices, and some problems that are solved by collective action should be that controversial. They really are 2 ways to solve problems and we should use both to solve problems at best align with each methodology.

This was & is heartbreaking. The old saying of - “for every rat you see there’s 10 you don’t “ - I’m afraid could definitely apply for this situation & this one type of contaminant , that the public now has been aware of ; but it begs the question |?| how many other chemicals are in everything & everywhere? Sadly in the past, in 🇺🇸 anyways, if you speak out or even question anything you’re quickly & easily branded a conspiracy theorist, even by family members. This really is such a difficult time in history, I know I’m not alone in feeling so alone. I do have to say though - I’m impressed that CBS Sunday morning did a story on this because mainstream media especially in the last 3 - 5 years is seemingly in bed with SO many of these big companies. I don’t know if CBS did that because of bravery or the now becoming extinct “journalistic integrity” or some other reason , which I hope is not nefarious. It’s hard to trust any supposed journalism/ “news” stations or reporters anymore.
