Selchi Groenie Thank you. They did nothing different from any other Kpop group. They just did tiny American tours and went to Kcon.. but in 2015-2016 their US fanbase grew so big (miles ahead of any other kpop group) that the mainstream US media couldn't ignore them anymore, and now here we are. Americans just liked BTS the most out of all groups and bought their music. That's the only reason they've gotten so popular here in the first place

That guy is a good example of someone not used to the idea of foreign music being popular. I get what hes saying but English music does not equal the most important music and BTS is proving that.
@nocturnaln
@nocturnaln 6 жыл бұрын
Ikr that smug mindset. "you have to be American or European to be the top boyband" It's 2018 and apparently English is the "American language." Why is he so conceited when they're not even relevant or top tier performers enough to even perform on the same stage. I would love to see them try though and for BTS to absolutely wipe the floor with them. Can you imagine these boys trying Mic Drop live with the dance breaks? Their fragile bones and ego would break. He also mocks them for 'disappearing' after the AMAs not understanding that BTS never aimed for the US market but got invited to perform due to sheer recognition of their talent anyway. Where are this group's performance invites to foreign award shows? Where are all their CF brand endorsement deals? Do they have UNICEF charity collabs or get asked to officially represent their city like BTS proudly does for Seoul? Are they even winning any prestigious local awards yet, unlike BTS and their multiple hard earned SOTY/AOTY/Global Artists Daesangs? Meanwhile, we got BTS over here writing and producing their own critically acclaimed discography with lyrics on social issues, mental health and literature, all while live rapping, singing and dancing incredibly difficult choreos. They're all also individually talented in their own right. Their rappers are well respected and the youngest member, who just turned 20 is already producing and writing his own music. Plus BTS outsold them in their own home country with a completely Korean album which btw, is still on BB200 after THIRTEEN weeks. All while remaining hardworking, classy and humble. That arrogant guy thinks they should surpass BTS just because they sing in "American" and that we'll just fall for their boring love songs. They don't understand that more than half of our demographic are adult professionals and far from teenage girls. My PhD engineer and med class ARMY friends would never give them the time of day. "I wouldn't go to their concerts cause I don't understand a word" Stay close minded bc you can't get tickets anyways. BTS sell out US and global arenas in under a min. Ticketing for their next world tour will be a bloodbath. Just plushies have thousands lining up in the freezing NY weather to buy. Anything BTS does sell out almost instantly, crashing websites worldwide. And they haven't even touched Europe yet. Let's see your group accomplish even half of the above.

So weirdly enough, I don't think he was being disrespectful but sharing the unfortunate truth about American culture (especially how big radio play factors into popularity). Do I think the tone could've been better and he's ignorant their story? Yes. Not everyone is gonna like BTS unfortunately, maybe they'll give them a chance after listening to one of their English versions but that's just the way Americans are. Heck even Despacito couldn't make the complete crossover.

the world is changing.... technologies plays a major part in it. its being beautifully played out in the latest Dan Brown book Origin. People are getting smarter... (nowadays even if u have a PhD its still difficult to secure a job)... so people looks at music differently. People in the entertainment industries should realized that their role is just not about giving the general public a music to party and enjoy to.. its more than that. they should start thinking about shaping a generation through music. society is facing a tough problem right now... n music can help them heal or endure through it...

"The world is not ready for multi language radio" No, you are not ready for it along with all the other close minded people in the world. They are so used to music in English that they can't accept that there is music in other languages. The rest of the world listens to multi language music, it's just America that doesn't. That guy on the left got on my nerves so much. I'm not trying to be rude, but I've never heard of this group until now and that's only because BTS was in the title. They act so arrogant like they're so famous yet BTS is the one that is being played on radios, and going on American award shows and talk shows. BTS is already so popular in the states and it's because of their own hard work, not with the help of other artists. "I don't understand what they're saying." It's not that hard to google the translations and I think the fact that BTS sings in Korean is what makes Army so close to each other and to BTS.

"The girls are singing korean! I don't even know if they know what they are saying" like, bro...we bothered to learn how to sing the lyrics, don't you think we would look up what they mean? Honestly I understand the lyrics to Korean bands more than pretty much any other artist i listen to, especially BTS who use a lot of word play, imagery, and poetic analogies. I still don't know the language, but having to actually look up and read the lyrics makes you think about them a lot more. You also remember the meaning pretty well after reading them and thinking about them in depth. The main reason I got into BTS in the first place is because of their lyrics

I used to listen to a lot of Indie folk music because I liked the lyrics better, but it wasn't exactly fun music. Kpop and BTS has amazing CURRENT music that also has great lyrics...or if you like i song but aren't wowed by the lyrics you never have to look them up again. you'll know what it's about but don't have to really think about and can just enjoy the sound

Right and they did that step by step which can ensure them ongoing poularity and not a short hype which can die down. I also honestly think they can go much higher they have more thant the potential for it. I also can`t imagen how high they can go lets hope for the best. Also yes they achived this all without an English Album/Songs and without being promoted bigg time by radios or a big marketing company in the US. I mean numbers don`t lie all those sold Albums charting around the world and very high in the US charts for a foreign group and even "boyband" and all their social media following and being more tweetet about than Justin B and ...[I will not name him in the same sentence as BTS.] which shows the interest and love they get from their Armies! Why should they change anything to get more attention and be more relvant to the "general puplic" when they grew everyday new fans with what they do and who they are...And Armys also belong to the general puplic in a way and can educate the people around them about BTS. Also I am sure that lots of people listen to songs casualy cause they kept hearing them on the radio maybe liking one song or two but arn`t supportiv of the Artist...Like I was never been a fan really of anyone wantin to support them...its like I know their names maybe liking a song and thats it I would never go to concerts or by Albums just maybe the song... And the thing is DNA is their "Hit Song" at the moment now followed by "Mic Drop" but if you follow BTS you will see that they get bigger and higher with every song they come back with their is no HIT Song no Hit Album [all are very good] the next Album will get more love same with the songs than the ones before as they grow everyday new fans. OK rant is over sorry it got longer than I wanted

HONESTLY, BTS doesn't need to collab with a huge celebrity to "become" famous. THEY DIDN'T EVEN NEED TO DO THAT BECAUSE OF THEIR HUGE FANBASE AND AMAZING MUSIC. In general, just because Despacito got popular because of Justin, doesn't mean you can just start comparing it to BTS because they are universal, they're music reaches BEYOND boundaries. I don't understand why people so close-minded can't see that language doesn't matter. Honestly, Ricky was very honest about BTS, saying their success in America was huge, and that they did an awesome job at doing so.

That's so stereotypical to say, not to mention ignorant, you can't just invite a Korean boy group into your country, play their song on the radio, and be like, ok well you have to adapt to our language so you can become famous here or it's nothing. That's like these boys, going to, you name whatever foreign country, and being told to write songs only in our language so you can be accepted. Lemme get this through ur head. MUSIC IS MUSIC. Shouldn't matter where you're from, what you speak, or anything.

Others in the comments have said better words to describe them than I, so I won't go to much into that. He says they need American lyrics yet Latin songs always make it big here, I think he is just a follower rather than a leader because once BTS make it big to the point most radios play them fluently and they start winning more American awards and get more views, he will more than likely accept them and act like he never said this crap about them. It is all because he listens to what everyone else around him listen to. He does not want to go off on his own because he is afraid of what people will think of him.

WAS ONE DIRECTION AMERICAN? (BRITISH) WAS 5SOS AMERICAN? (AUSTRALIAN) WERE THE BEATLES AMERICAN? (BRITISH) “They’d get played if Selena Gomez-“ OKAY THEY’D GET PLAYED ON THEIR OWN ACCORD. DNA? BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS? SAVE ME? SPRING DAY? “BTS let’s do a collab, hit us up.” YEAH I’M ALL FOR THAT JUST GET RID OF YOUR BUDDY ON THE LEFT FIRST THANKS. ________ “Music is a universal language so it doesn’t matter” THANK YOU GUY IN THE BLACK SWEATER, SOMEONE’S BEEN LISTENING TO RM SUNBAENIM “There is a translation for the songs” THANK YOU GUY ON THE RIGHT ________ “This is like a debate show” I NOMINATE RM AND YOONGI ------------- All jokes aside, I think the guy on the left's views on not just BTS, but Korean music in general is very close minded. He keeps claiming he loves BTS' music and they're amazing, yet all I hear is how they can't make it in America because of the fact they are Korean and their language barrier. Korean is not different from Spanish, Italian, or any other language. I understand that Spanish and Italian are used more in America, but I guarantee the majority of the country is not fluent enough to understand a full song in both languages. Language is used all over the world to communicate, but music transcends that. You can feel emotions, you can feel the message behind a song even if you might not understand all the lyrics. I hope as a musician he grows to learn that.

Well, language barrier is a real thing. It's not impossible to make through but it's really hard. Korean is reaaaally different from English and yes, that makes harder to English speakers identify themselves with K-pop at first glance. Actually you don't have to go that far.. Have you ever heard a brasilian Portuguese song in USA? Maybe you heard Anitta(Brazilian) singing in English. For her to get her music to "America" (USA), Anitta had to release songs in English and Spanish, because of the language barrier. I don't think she made it to the "american" radio yet, but whatever. So, I think you didn't get exactly what Liam meant to say. And I don't think he expressed himself the way he wanted and, in fact, he said some unfortunate words. But, don't be too harsh on him, cause he's got a point. BTS and K-poo can make to "America" as they're doing gracefully, but it's not easy. Besides the language barrier there's also the fact that K-pop is a different genre than the ones "americans" were used to at first, what makes it even harder. (Like it was with the Reggaeton) So yeah, concluding that was the thought process of Liam: If it was hard for Reggaeton to come to usa with lots and lots of Spanish speakers imagine for a genre from the other side of the world that hasn't many people speaking its language on the usa. 2 years after this interview (/when they were just beginning in America) I can say that they did make it to America without having to translate too much and I really admire this. Liam messed up, but please forgive him and give them another shot. They have pretty good songs and are part of pretty good shows. Liam is a sweetheart, just like the others, that is like everyone else. Everybody talks shit sometimes... PS: I'm sorry if there's something wrong or hard to understand. English isn't my mother tongue. Trust me when I say I know what it is language barrier. And sorry if i offended you somehow I swear it wasn't my intention. I'm available to talk if you want. Have a good day.

BTS don’t promote in America that’s why you haven’t heard much from them after AMAs.. they promote in Korea and Japan only. The hundreds of thousands of AMERICAN fans kept demanding for them to come here because we love them so much and wanted to see them and make them the one and only mainstream “Boy Band” in the U.S. (even if they sing in Korean) lol that guy needs to get over himself. Basic white boy bands are overrated and we’re not here for them anymore. A two step on stage and playing an instrument doesn’t make you any different there are already U.S boy groups that do the same🤐. BTS is dominating whether he likes it or not. They’re winning AMERICAN awards, charting higher than all of the current American boy bands on the Billboard charts, outselling all of the American boy bands with tours and music. They have more American fans than these other U.S groups and they’re not even from America! He needs to catch up and realize BTS are the IT group. There is no need for an “American” boy band. Us Americans chose BTS, they can sing, dance, rap, produce, and write their own lyrics. They’re not going to “westernize” themselves to appeal to close-minded people like you. They’re going to love their culture and their KOREAN language. It’s what makes them even more special, as a POC it’s nice to finally have a non-white boy group that i can somewhat relate to even though i’m not Asian. Their struggles and nasty racist comments they face is what makes me want to support them harder to make sure they stay on top so people like him can’t ever say ignorant sh*t like this again. That you don’t have to be “American/British” AKA WHITE to succeed. Just because HE doesn’t like that they sing in Korean doesn’t mean Millions of other people don’t either. He’s overly arrogant and that’s not a good look especially for a group nobody’s even heard of... BTS are getting radio play they’re at #26 out of 50 on the Radio songs chart with over 2.5k Spins. 😘 and guy on the left don’t forget to vote for BTS at the AMERICAN iHeartRadio awards they were nominated for Best Boy Band, yep the same BTS you said America isn’t interested in because they don’t speak “AMERICAN” ☺️

I learnt so much from BTS and I got even more open minded. tbh his statement about BTS made him so unlikable.

He said I know what despacito means, because he googled it and knew it meant 'slowly'. Why can't he look up the lyrics for BTS? Their songs relate to so many people and actually make people feel better. The guy on the right, I think his name is Ricky, he's so open minded and I love that. He likes there songs, even if it's in another language. But guys like the one on the right isn't. It's sad and also annoying, because people like his is the ones that we don't have multicultural music playing in the radio.

For example, BTS in Brasil have a big,big fanbase, and they don't speak in Portuguese, this is not about make song in english or not, it's about the people that have their mind opened. I'm still laughing about the fact that they even mentioned something like a collaboration...

Exactly. I think the guy (I think his name is Liam) is forgetting that the world has a variety of languages. To think that America is the only important country is plain dumb. They are helping people realize the difference between music TRANSCENDS language and culture, compared to music IS language and culture. BTS helps everyone learn that it's a different, and not meant to be compared.

I'm a new BTS fan (baby ARMY), only been for a month, and I'm currently diving into their struggles in the past. So here I am. Man I don't get it. If you don't like BTS, just don't talk about them if you're just going to express disgust. I was indifferent to BTS for many years until I decided to figure out why they got so big. The entire process lead me to love them sincerely as I got to know their message, personality, and artistry. I know the guy in the middle from a netflix show I watched, but I don't even his name. I didn't know he has a band. I may not be a fan of BTS last year or before that, but even I have heard of the name "BTS". I seriously haven't even heard of this band. I feel sorry for them. They have a long way to go, and if they were nice, passionate, and respectful, maybe they'll grow their craft and fanbase too. Maybe then I could have given them a chance. But this entire interview only prevented them from climbing higher. Now I refuse to listen to their songs, I'm disappointed already.

Talitha Z Plus the mic drop remix was only in English as a gift to American fans for all the once "impossible" things they've given to BTS (their billboard award, billboard charting, promotion, AMAS support etc.). It could've also just been a test to see if English lyrics make a difference to an extent Korean wouldn't .. and so far the fan reception is the same to both languages IN THE US.

I'm on Twitter and Instagram every day and I've never heard their name ANYWHERE before, and the only reason this video is getting views is because BTS is in the name (it was shared to BTS communities). It's nice that they're sharing their honest thoughts but you have to make sure people actually give a sh*t about your honest thoughts first. The part where he says "There needs to be an American or European boyband on top" shocked me, did no one in that studio see the blatant racism implied there? I was so triggered at the dude on the left but thank god Zach came through. First of all, I have no clue who they are I just clicked because of BTS in the title and I'm not going to check them out because they seem so full of themselves especially the dude on the left. His whole point is so stupid. BTS does not need to be put in their own category because music shouldn't have a boarder, prejudice people like him is the reason why there is still a boarder. Take for example Despacito, I'm pretty sure so many people, them probably included, don't have a clue what the fuck the Spanish part means. But yet so many people around the world dance and sing a long to it. It plays all the time on the radio everywhere and years from now people will still remember it. How is that different from a song in a foreign language with some english like k-pop songs? Just because it's something new and BTS is breaking the rules of what can be "normal" / "mainstream" doesn't mean it's never going to be the norm. It can be the norm if people are not closed minded like them. Don't they know that there are so many people of different races in Western countries that speak many different languages other than English/Spanish/French? Also if people only can love music in a language that they understand then explain why english songs are very popular in for example Asian countries that majority of the people don't speak fluent english?! They are judging BTS even though it's so obvious they don't know much about them. They saw them on the AMAs and heard about Mic Drop and think they're not doing much else? BRUH. First of all since they are based in Asia. Second of all since their are still people like you that are still building walls it probably seems like they're not making any news to someone not following them in the US but in Asia they've been performing literally every other day at huge award shows and winning awards left and right. I've never heard anything about these guys or see them at any award shows and I live in North America lol. Also, they come across so arrogant talking about how high energy and amazing they are at their shows. Have they even seen any of BTS performances or concerts!?! ARMY let's all take a moment to appreciate Mic Drop at 2017 MAMA like if that's not crazy energy on top of a fucking amazing performance I don't know what is. These guys probably just jump around and yell on stage and think they are so much better than the bands. BTS write their own music, produce, sing live while doing intense choreography. Even if you don't speak the language you can still appreciate good music. If you want to understand the words there's this thing call the internet you can look up the translations. Good music will live on forever doesn't matter what language it's in. Like seriously MUSIC. IS. A. UNIVERSAL. LANGUAGE. omg it's 2018 for god's sake.

I literally watched them interview someone a month ago and they asked "Who's your favorite boy band? You're allowed to say us." Now all of a sudden that these really good boy bands like Why Don't We, In Real Life, PRETTYMUCH, and BTS are showing them up they're distancing themselves from that title because they know they can't compete. Rather than just working hard and putting out some good music, they just shit on their superior competition. They've been trying to make it for FOUR YEARS and they're still completely irrelevant. They're signed to the same label that just signed In Real Life. Disney channel who has been their only promotion has just named Why Don't We as their "Next Big Thing" and are pushing their music hard. They're literally just salty. Shout out to Ricky (the one on the right) for being the only level headed one, I'd encourage you to go solo and get away from your ignorant "band mates."
