Still waiting for Adobe to make the vector brush to show the actual brush as you draw and not after the fact. But at this point, I don't think that will ever happen.

I'm confused as to why you converted it to a smart object and then rasterised the layer.

The reason is that he could to apply the mask of the layer to it, then he resterised it to have it as a PNG. Hope this can help you
