I think you are likely to find those attributes in many artisan craftsmen, wtvr medium they work with. Its the understanding that gratification comes with patience and hard work. Unlike today where many look at the world though the optics of social media and a desire for instant gratification. One fosters more drama than the other. At least that's my opinion. cheers.

Finally a judge who actually looked a bit out of his element in the time crunch, although he still made fantastic blades if not for that grind that was a little too deep he very likely could have pulled it off.

Somehow, I feel that these mistakes he made in this episode are very intentional. I noticed the way this episode focused on his feeling as the competitor and going through the same struggle that he has said many times before. Furthermore, it is very suspicious for him to make just a simple mistake while other aspects are almost flawless. This is just a theory I came up with.

Technically Burt has more experience anyway, he's cranking up 200-400 knives a year while J is being a judge on the show. Also he has been a mastersmith for longer. Really amazing for Ben to beat him on the regular show if you think about it.

Now, unlike the other 'Beat the Judges' videos, which were appallingly one-sided in favor of the judges, I actually really enjoyed this one, primarily because both Burt and Jay are Mastersmiths, which makes the competition a lot more fair.

This trade is hard and brutal so an outsider expects the guys must be foul-tongued, aggressive and intimidating but it's the complete opposite. They are polite, soft spoken and extremely respectful!

It would be neat to have a full episode (maybe an off-season special) where Ben, J, and Dave compete against each other to make something truly special. Reasonable timeframe, no special challenge, just an opportunity to show off the best they can do. Could even get Jason in on it if he were willing. They always feature Ben as the host to beat, and he's clearly capable, but I want to see the others at their best as well

This guy builds every of his blade to endure his own brutal test. You can tell Jay bashes every contestant's blade mercilessly because this is what he has been doing to his own creations. The grip is rough but in strength test, the blade just demolish the hard targets. Some smiths are known to make strong blades. Their weapons can be used to do things what you usually can't get away with. But that finger groove, man I can't tell you how many times a bad grip design has hurt my hand, especially during test cutting hard targets.

@@gettingtoastedatq Yeah, actually according to the ABS website, Burt is a Master Bladesmith and an instructor, meanwhile Jay is only a Master. An instructor is an even higher level than just a Master Bladesmith, which in itself is already a hard title to accomplish.

Jay made some awesome blades... just sad about the finger-wells... I'm glad to see Jay handled the situation with a lot of class... but on the tree stab, Jay's blades were amazing - digging out chunks of wood... Burt's swords were so thin but still held-up so well against the stump - that was also very impressive... Burt's blades looked like they were stabbing warm butter against the ballistics-dummy... while J's blades took its head... wow... nice to see how different and how excellent both sets of blades were... glad to see the best overall swords won... but both were stunning and unique... both guys are master smiths :) Fantastic episode!

It is sort of a running joke with the show, the way Doug says the word, and he even confirmed that he intentionally says it as "keal", as an abbreviation of "Keep Everyone ALive". This is an attempt at being more family-friendly, but more importantly, it's a meme.

There are 150 only in America apparently. Allow me to doubt that over 6.7 billions other peoples over the world, there are fewer than 50 master bladesmiths :)

@@aubinaps1427 well it's true you should Google it. I'm certain there are a lot of bladesmiths worldwide who are worthy of the title but it's just inaccessible to them, hence why 150 of the 200 are American
