With the first test: He jabs the daggers into a steel gas can, WRENCHES THEM AROUND, and then is all "dude wtf there's a bend". Also, they test the effectiveness AFTER damaging them? I get that they fixed this in later episodes, but wow.
@laughingachilles
@laughingachilles 5 жыл бұрын
A chip on the blade? Yes that is pretty standard when you're stabbing a metal object with a flat blade of a reasonable size. When plate armour became more common in Europe the smiths invented the rondel dagger in order to pierce the armour, later this was developed into the stiletto dagger which could be used against chain-mail or leather armour. I would easily pierce the body without being damaged and it wouldn't become stuck as it couldn't snag on metal or bone. This later inspired the bayonets used in WW1 and the 3 sided 'trench knife'.

@timfowlie3138
@timfowlie3138 5 жыл бұрын
Metal-Muscle & Games but the thing is when you have variables like that involved in the test it makes it more difficult to tell if it was the the human that did the stabbing did that or if the blade was just poorly made and what we’re are testing that human error of the person who made the blade and not how well someone will stab a can. When you test something like that then the difference between going home and staying could all be because the person testing stabbed with your dagger slightly harder than when he had your opponents dagger. See where were getting at?
@timfowlie3138
@timfowlie3138 5 жыл бұрын
Metal-Muscle & Games it doesn’t just “all depend on who made their blade the best” because the tester could have driven the blade of one person harder into the can and another’s slightly softer so if you add that variable into the test then it all depends on who made their blade the best and who got the lowest amount of force, applied by the tester, on the blade.

@yunanklaus1195
@yunanklaus1195 5 жыл бұрын
@@Kal6933 I know it was a strength test, they were trying to test the daggers endurance. However, daggers aren't meant to be used to stab through metal plates, that's not what they're designed for, so stabbing it to a metal plate will definitely chip it off, if not bend or distort it. You can, however, test the endurance by hitting it with an arming sword because back then, daggers are also used for parrying in dual wielding technique, where your main arm is a sword and your companion arm is a dagger. It is not a showoff, fantasy technique that can only be found in movies and cartoons - you can find it in Europeans sword techniques like fencing (the real fencing, not the Olympic circus they put up on tv these days) and Japanese Kenjutsu.

Well, a great dagger would anyway. But they aren't trying to reward mediocrity on this show. Sure stabing through metal cans and wrenching them out is way more abuse than a dagger ordinarily would have to face but if it can hold up relatively well to that then that means a lot as far as the quality goes. Notice 2/3 bent? One didn't bend. So right there is proof that making a dagger that can stand up well against this test is very possible.
