Damascus has a mixed grain structure so is less prone to snapping and is a bit stronger than most mono steel blades as well as show skill in forging think how mixed grain plywood has far less a chance for a break to proliferate through it when planks can easily break in certain directions due to the grain

Yup, and works just fine of mixed correctly. The brass pins that the judge was looking for are a joke compared to the shear strength of good epoxy. Would have taken something on the order of 90 1/8" pins (shear strength of a little over 410 lbs) to even get close to the almost 38000 lbs of shear strength (.5x6" tang). Because this design doesn't have really allow for a traditional pommel, I would consider it completely adequate.

A massive amount of credit is due to her for keeping her composure at the end. You can just hear her holding back tears with every word as she thanks the judges for their time, and when she's stuck in front of the camera for the exit interview. Just for the 'wow!' factor by the judges? The judges favor utility > looks 100/100 unless the blades basically tie in terms of all other factors. A nice looking blade or a functional one? I know what I'd take into battle or make if I was going into a test like this...so why do so many smiths still attempt it? Just for pride?

Angel Mendoza every single weld is a source for human error to be a factor. Damascing a blade is 100% for visuals. If damascened steels were even a little better in any way than mono steels, you’d see damascened cutting edges in industry, and i can promise you that you’ll have a hard time finding one. OP is correct, making a damascus steel blade for FiF is always a huge risk for a very small payoff. I have never seen a final where the final desicion came down to the pattern of the steel. It is 100% performance in the tests followed by fit and finish.

A) I believe they have a limited amount of time per day to work, managed by the camera crew following their work. She may well have literally ran out of time. B)There are several historical examples of blades that are glued only. Doesn't mean that they won't hold up. Many Indo-Persian swords were only secured by glue (Tulwar, many Shamshir, Kora, etc.). Traditional Japanese swords are merely secured by a single bamboo pin with no Glu or peening, and a tang that's shorter than the handle. I'm saddened that Doug chose not to test it, because it very well may have held up.

@@Langenschwerte It's not safe to test and a potential liability or injury waiting to happen. Yeah, historical weapons made for warfare could have been secured with only glue, straps, and such, but for a competition like this the safety of the tester and a fair testing environment are required. There have been blades with pinned, riveted, or other styles of well-secured handles that have failed at the tang, halfway through the handle, at the pommel, or along the blade and sent a piece of metal flying. Do YOU wanna be in the room if that glue comes free and an entire blade is sailing across the room waiting to take someone's head off?

There are several historical examples of blades that are glued only. Many Indo-Persian swords were only secured by glue (Tulwar, many Shamshir, Kora, etc.). Traditional Japanese swords are merely secured by a single bamboo pin, no glue, no peen, and a tang that's shorter than the handle. I'm saddened that Doug chose not to test it, because it very well may have held up.

This episode really shows how difficult it is to make a weapon out of steel, and the myriad of ways failures can occur. It just goes to show that most of the contestants on this show are actually experienced or skilled enough to at least produce something functional from what is essentially fire and metal, which I probably wouldn't have any chance of doing.
