Just be aware that Tim’s handle is historically correct with the wire wrap. If he looked at a museum piece for the design, then thats probably why its on there. he should not have been called on that.

To be fair, the historical examples we see have the wire tightly wrapped and flush with the rest of the handle, whereas his had it over the rest of it, creating a ridge that may not be comfortable

Shamshir is a Persian word for "Sword" and we use it to refer to any kind of sword. But it's actually a two part word with "Sham" meaning "Nail" or "Claw" and "Shir" meaning "Lion".

that's the definition of worse its better until it didn't last as long or perform as well as the other one. the other guys was better not as sharp but was so durable and didn't lose sharpness if you lose sharpness its no good if it starts out sharper but gets duller quicker

@@maxortega8073 you missed the point. Tims was a historically accurate shamshir while the other guy just made a saber with exaggerated curve. It wasn't about how he could do it better but about the general bias in the show towards towards hard chunks of metal because of the flashy nature of the tests. Used properly the lighter shamshir would be devastating from horseback. Just don't aim for the skull.

@@b_f_d_d I would like to know what the weight difference was. Real swords were not heavy. You could find yourself having to swing the thing for hours in a real battle. It was a huge balancing act to to make a sword that was strong enough and light enough and balanced enough and able to defeat armor well enough. Almost no sword perfectly manages all of the competing requirements. In this show they abuse a sword for a few minutes. That makes heavier weapons better for the show. They were not necessarily better in real life situations.

Why though? It had less edge damage, performed better in the kill test and had a more intricate blade. A horse back saber should be relatively heavy as well for chopping so that really isn't a factor.

@@daniel96jg no one asked for a fancy blade. He should have put more time into the grip and keeping the weight low. Shamshir were not primarily cavalry weapons, this agility and being able to wield for a while is essential.

Sideways quenching is usually done for lower temperatures. It has to be. So it doesn't "flame". That would be very dangerous.

Sharpness : No notable difference. Kill : Pretty much equality. Strength : One blade toke a slight bend. One blade is lighter, the other have a nice, bold, Damascus pattern. Decision : Fit & finish and less damage won.

Tim's sword dulled quicker and picked up a bend in the blade. It would not have lasted as long in everyday combat. The other guy's sword may have been heavier, but the wielder can adapt to the weight; where as weak and soft steal will always be weak and soft until it is REFORGED.

Anybody else see the swapped out footage of the two swords at 5:52 ? You'll see the brass cross guard instead of the matte steel/silver of the sword that is supposed to be used at the time. It gets switched back to footage of the first one at the third fish after an edit cut. Back to the matte steel.
