They had an international competition once. Italy and America were the ones who made the final. America won but with controversy because he used stock reduction instead of forging. Edit: They have had non-American contestants before, technically. Ilya from Man At Arms absolutely destroyed the competition.

Actually there have been episodes where the lighter sword ends up breaking thus the heavier sword wins by default. But yeah, the word heavy is a death sentence aka you're going to lose. lol

If you guys recall, Theo won his Naginata episode because in the very first test, his opponent's handle cracked and it was deemed unsafe to test any further (the crack was wide enough that Doug could get his fingernail inside it). Will never forget Theo's response "Wait, that's it? We can't do anything else?" He was really disappointed that the two weapons couldn't be evenly tested, so I'd wager he felt MUCH more satisfied with this victory than his previous one.

I usually don’t like carcass being treated like that for entertainment purposes, but here it is also for educational purposes for the viewers and the blacksmiths. I just hope they use the rest to feed animals or people and don’t just throw it away

Just curious, would anybody be able to answer this for me: If you're worried about the weight of the tip bending the sword, while heat treating in that small furnace - would simply rotating the forge 90° vertically not be the answer? Thanks in advance.

Maybe the set up doesn't allow to, it's time consuming, familiarity of horizontal method, and many more... But it's definitely possible, I've seen it on some contestants.
