To be fair as someone who’s been a professional mechanic for more than 20 years, I’ll let you in on the reason we don’t get the Toyota diesels and it’s because we’re the only country on earth that actually monitors NOx emissions so well yes other countries get fun engines. We don’t get they also have the health problems related with the higher NOx concentrations. Toyota even makes the non-turbo diesel from the 80s still but they only sell it in Third World countries. Everybody cheated on their diesel emissions to make them meet requirements and be sold in this country. It’s not the engine that’s the big factor here because to be fair we could easily slap the 2.7 in it since the rest of world it also comes with that engine. The problem is in the USA. We have so many other requirements back up sensors back up cameras, side curtain airbags Goes on. There’s a lot of stuff we have here in the United States that those vehicles don’t come equipped with you can even get them with manual windows and manual air-conditioning controls still but it still cost the same as a fully loaded F150 because you’re paying for the durability. The problem is the American public while we want stuff like that is never willing to pay that cost so there’s a lot of factors you see.
@Forged4x46 күн бұрын
I feel like I need to do a deep dive into emissions standards. I feel like there's a lot of sh*t we get wrong. Like increasing the emissions standard depending on how big the vehicle is... This just leads to auto manufacturers making heavier, bigger vehicles so they don't have to make the engine more efficient. As an entrepreneur and capitalist, I get how much of a pain in the butt it is to deal with the balance of regulations vs having a profitable company. Making vehicles is harder than I can imagine and it would be a lot easier to make whatever kind of vehicle you want... but I also have seen pictures of Los Angeles in the 80s (heck... even to this day SMOG is gnarly in so cal). So... Ya... Deep dive coming @Landcruiseroverland

@@johanmetreus1268 what I mean by that is not that we are the only one that monitors NOx but we regulate it while most countries focus more on the carbon and sweep the NOc under the carpet. At the end of the day it’s all sad the agenda when the emissions from vehicles is only 20% of the emissions globally. We need to crack down on the industrial and off-road equipment emissions and loosen up on the light vehicles
@johanmetreus12686 күн бұрын
@@Landcruiseroverland NOx has been part of the EU-regulations since Euro3 in 2000, with several other countries (like Australia) adapting them as to not having to deal with multiple standards and sets of rules. Then again, the EuroN is just a part of the wider EU emission control program. Here is where I disagree with you. 20% of the total is a rather significant portion, but also much more dominant in city environments . Compare the Californian smogs in the 1980s with what the air looks like today. The real issue, as I see it, is that we for some reason seem fine to import goods and commodities produced in manners that would result in the owners and managers being imprisoned if it had been within the borders.

The only people who bought them were some rich businessmen as the F150 and Expedition were made into a status symbol because if anyone who bought them that means they have the money to spend for a heck ton of fuel for the gas guzzlers, as well well as other cars when they're F150 and Expedition breaks down and needs repair that will take 2-3 months because parts aren't available locally; and when I said "some rich businessmen" that's because most rich businessmen usually buy a Toyota Landcruiser as their daily and as a status symbol. While Americans are obsessed about large V8 or V12 engines and going 0-60, here in Southeast Asia, we care a lot more about fuel efficiency, availability of parts, practicality in our daily lives, and if it can fit 3 generations of a household; last part about fitting 3 generations of a household is why pickup trucks are very popular here because a lot more people can ride in the pickup bed, however due to stricter laws in the last decade or so, specifically about people riding on the back of pickup trucks, most people have moved on to 7-seater mid-size SUVs, compact SUVs, and MPVs(Multi-purpose vehicles catered to the Asian market specifically designed for practicality and comfort that can accomodate a large number of passengers or a large amount of cargo space.

Aussie here, and yeah the Hilux was the top selling vehicle (of all passenger vehicles, not just 4WD) for years here, only recently toppled by the inferior Ranger dual-cab ute - though the Hilux is still the 2nd best seller. Pretty much every minesite has a fleet of them (along with LC utes and troopies, while the site managers' these days typically get about in Prados) I never knew it wasn't sold in the US - could have sworn Marty McFly had a Hilux SR5 in the original Back to the Future. That it doesn't meet US standards is hilarious - you can buy them in Europe where the emissions and safety standards are more stringent. And especially hilarious when you consider the appallingly inefficient and unreliable drivetrains, and tin-can construction, of many US-made vehicles. Must be very particular (and technically pointless) differences in the regulations. Still, they are as you say - unbreakable - so just go for a 25yo grey import over either your northern or southern border.

@@JarJarbinkus in Australia every 4wd is diesel and we travel 3000+ kilometres to remote tracks. Diesel definitely has more torque and at a lower rpm so it’s more controllable and better for carrying equipment. It’s just American diesels are junk
@Denis_v1.0_beta6 күн бұрын
@@JarJarbinkus I suggest you visit Australia and talk to diesel ute (truck) owners, which is around one out of every five new vehicle owners. Three of the top four selling vehicles in Australia in 2024 were 4x4 utes (Ford ranger, Toyota Hilux, and Isuzu D-Max), the vast majority of which were diesel dual cabs purchased as the main family vehicle. There is a very good reason for these vehicles topping the sales charts. Almost everything you wrote above is incorrect. Do your research before you spew garbage in a comments section.

@@JarJarbinkus…. The latest hilux has 200hp n 370 lbft of torque from a 2.8L turbodiesel. N its getting that torque from ~1500rpm. Couple that with a 6speed, 4L n some decent mud tires… Thai bros n Borneo bros are regularly hauling 4000lb of god-knows-wtf up a side of a hilly jungle 6 days a week with their single cab hiluxes.. for a living.

The main thing Tacoma needs is a DIESEL engine, especially the 4th generation. Can some start a petition to get Toyota to bring so diesel engines in the USA?

Blame the EPA. A truck that gets 30mpg but doesn't have an electric battery is something our gov't doesn't understand.

I have always been Michigan Chevy man, then I moved to Nicaragua. I drive a 2022 Hilux with a 2.8 diesel. Mine can get 40 miles a gallon on open roads. Then I climb mountains in 4l. Now i say, Chevy what?

You can buy a 25 year old Hilux in Mexico or Guatemala and import it to the U.S.

Let me put it this way, if you are tied on cash and need something with durability, trustworthy and capabilities on an offroad buy the Toyota Hilux

In the States, you also cannot get the Corolla Hybrid Wagon that's available all over everywhere else. The U.S. sucks! Whatever is created and invented in vehicles overseas could EASILY be created and invented by someone in the Big 3. Instead, these companies think "AMERICAN" which is wildly out of date. Ford made the Maverick, so it shows they CAN if they want to. They don't. Back in the '80s, I drove a Toyota pickup that was bulletproof, yet, American makers were making the S-10 and the Ranger. No contest. The problem is US! It's greed and profits instead of making what the consumer actually wants and the makers COULD be making. I'd like the Jimney to come back too. America isn't "free"; far from it. It's a cloaked Dictatorship not many are willing to see. The only real way to get a good vehicle in America today is (maybe) get a legal 25+ year old import, or move to another country. Until then...

With the sales and reliability issues of the new Tacoma they are going to have to bring back the Hilux
@davidflores17077 күн бұрын
The n80 Hilux with the 2.8 turbo diesel 1gd-ftv engine is plagued with issues, mainly the dpf. It gets clogged up and goes into regeneration for days which in turn dilutes the oil with diesel and because they've changed the engine to a timing chain, it wears out the chain. EGR coolers leak as well.
@Forged4x47 күн бұрын
Use all the gas money you’re saving to fix it and still have enough left over for 37” tires. I don’t see an issue here 😂

Ive owned Tacomas and a Hilux, tbh the Tacoma is a more capable truck. Just wish it has a stronger powertrain option.
@redrallywagon5 күн бұрын
This video is BS. Hilux are not "banned", they have not been qualified for import. The US Taco is just as good a truck. I own a Hilux in Central America and it's no unicorn, no better built than a Taco, and certainly not as well built as the j70 series LC. If Toyota wanted to sell Hilux in US they would submit the paperwork to the feds and start the NHTSA process.

In the rest of the world, no one buys the Sienna. A long time ago in Canada the van Toyota sold here was a quirky neat thing with the engine between the front seats. The evolution of that same van in various shapes and sizes is what the rest of the world gets but not us.

Well from your first statement and as a Brit living in the states, the first problem with that statement is the states is is not as close to free as you think it is. Unfortunately you guys are brainwashed into thinking that. Don't take my word for it, ask any American that has lived abroad for some time or just never came back.

It's true. Americans are ANYTHING but free.
@Duu27 күн бұрын
Some of this does not make sense. Ford created the Maverick affordable pick up from scratch and it sells like hot cakes. So Toyota could spend some money and time on the Hilux. Also you showed some land cruisers there too, not hilux. I have many Toyotas: FJ, LC200 as an LX 570 and others. Also deisel has 11% more volumetric energy than gasoline, so you need to offset the gas mileage by that amount to make a resonable comparison, from 30 down to 26.7 mpg equivalent.
