this is kind of what's behind "you don't need a degree", where even just a few days ago, the government is dropping such requirements. as soon as four year degrees were required, we created the student loan crisis; as everybody went to take out a loan for a "i have a four year degree" degree in ... anything. then bootcamps came to the rescue. with these educations being of such variable quality, leetcode tests became a thing. every mandatory filter filters out things that are NOT mandatory, even if that's not the intent. you can have a workforce that passes tests for illegal (and legal) drugs. but then you filtered out people that got a 'yes' from somebody else on the basis of their skills. there are people that just don't want to be subjected to testing for something they might do infrequently enough that it does not impact their work. but this draws in people that can rely on total abstinence as a substitute for high skill. this is why government jobs can trap you in teams of not-quite competent people. then you try to be smart and demand a four year technical degree. now, everybody has loans to pay off, and they demand too much money. the colleges are part of the problem, because they are businesses too. some people major in Bullshitology just to be a "college graduate". or you can demand leetcode tests instead of any kind of degree. one of the most famous Python programmers on earth (i know this guy) wrote a popular book, wrote the Requests library (the http library used by everyone), certifi (the certs manager), and virtualenv. he got flown out for an interview, that included a timed leetcode test. lol. wasted his time. the leetcode tests in particular, i think actually filter out experience. one of my friends who LOVES leetcode tests works for CrowdStrike, and that stack trace passed through a lot of his code. He's a very smart guy, but he's working in an area where you gotta be slow and careful.

the main problem with the internship advice is that even people with tons of experience are having trouble getting hired. experience is an indicator of age. once you get into your 50s, you will encounter different sorts of barriers. i noticed that every commercial company had an almost identical form. right after asking about your race, they had a list of "disabilities" to declare; and diabetes is on the list. they are getting on a slipperly slope to asking questions that might be illegal; but nobody wants you if you have a chronic condition.
@robfielding8566
@robfielding8566 2 ай бұрын
and of course an "internship" does not mean that it's unpaid. it means that you make SOMEONE ELSE pay for it. my wife is a caregiver. she got certified as a CNA (certified nursing assistant) by her company. when she tried to get it BEFORE the job, they wanted her to work for free for a month. How the hell does that work? Oh yeah, your PARENTS pay for that month, or your spouse does it. this is one of the ways that older people get filtered out. Require an internship, and wow... everybody is under 22. it's kind of ugly, but that's how things work. Everybody tries to find creative ways to either get in (go in unpaid for a bit), or to gatekeep it cheaply (leetcode, internships, etc).

12 years ago I met a helicopter pilot who told me the same situation in a helicopter piloting field. The school usually gets you to 200-250 hours with all licenses and certificates, but the minimal job requirements usually are 500+ hours in a specific aircraft type. Richest students ended up hiring aircraft owners to fly along them for 200-300 more hours to log in order to get ahead and have a chance to fly for $20 an hour. The worst stories I've heard, the pilots with savings agreed to pay their first employers to work for them, just to get experience. It's supply and demand basically. The employers should just drop the salaries from 120-200k a year to 40-90k a year....oh wait, they're already doing it: by outsourcing.

Dude. Why are people so crybabies? I dont know ANY pro career where companies hire you as an engineer or as a profesional coming out of school, Let alone a bootcamp. They ALWAYS Will ask you to do an intership with the possibility of getting a Job as a pro. I have been in the manufacturing and industrial field for about 8 years and i have NEVER seen a company hire someone before having to do some kind of intership in the company. If you have ZERO experience, that Is what Is expected. In the health and medical field its exactly the same thing. No hospital Will hire you as a Doctor for the first Time if you dont have any kind of intership experience. I feel like Tech students and Tech workers in general got too demanding and too crybabies in comparison to other profesionals because of the boom that the Tech industry had a couple of years ago. Those days of doing a bootcamp and getting hired 3 months in with just a bootcamp certificate but ZERO experience are gone. Thats a Bubble that had to pop at some point. And companies asking for an intership before offering a job as a profesional Is a STANDARD in MOST if not all pro careers.

I feel for engineers just starting out without work experience... but just to put it out there - when I'm hiring I do take 1-2 hours a day to review candidates github code and portfolio. I have no idea how these companies manage things by having non-technical people do the hiring and only relying on some arcane algorithm-based technical interview. If someone has some decent portfolio code that solves business problems, they can speak coherently about our stack, and they show some indicators that they researched things between the 2nd and 3rd interview - they're in. Internship proves they've at least seen a scrum workflow with a team, and worked in large scale codebases. So I agree there. Thing is - over half of all dev jobs are not at tech companies... including all the dev work I've ever gotten. So an internship at Amazon is going to look alot different than our little 300 user internal business app. Solid video though, it's very interesting to hear the perspective from the other side of the fence.
@robfielding8566
@robfielding8566 2 ай бұрын
the title of the video tells you to "dont make apps", which is probably good advice if you are so inexperienced that an internship would be better. but if you HAVE experience, having evidence that you do know how to work in big projects is necessary. i do agree though: some recruiter will have trouble running any of it. getting the toolchain setup is often just too time-consuming. I was doing KZbin videos of code-walkthrough and functionality-demo to get around that. The recruiters DO expect some stuff in github; it's just that they would be too lazy to actually read it, even if they built 100% of the time. and obviously if you are trying to GET an internship, it's kind of idiotic to look for an internship as an indicator.

@@wforbes87 my kid is a Notre Dame aerospace engineering student. she did an 8 foot wind tunnel in middle school. i took her into my job as an intern when she was 14. if she could not build my code, then it was fixed until she could. the competition is terrifying. if you don't have lots and lots of side projects making things; it's hard to get noticed at all. for a few years, i did iOS apps, and got the attention of well-known rock stars. even though it was a music app; it definitely had landed me the next job i had. for a long time, that seemed to be the only way i could survive: work on huge projects and get noticed with videos of them. i am amazed by what i see people doing with Cursor right now; entire apps in a YT video. if you cannot manage that, then i would suggest getting a high security clearance. The market is oversaturated with talent. The tech industry is now doing what the Auto-industry did during the recession in 2008-09. Id advise finding a apprenticeship in a blue collar trade job. Its not as glamorous, it also doesnt pay as much..But those jobs are always in demand..Especially stonemasons, metal workers, plumbers, Riggers, crane operators etc. This is the new normal for tech. Not saying you shouldnt pursue a job in the tech industry, but be prepared to be out of it for a long time. So its best to get skills in a multitude of industries. I have several years of experience as an Agile Coach, Product Owner, Product Manager, and Scrum Master, but I'm looking to transition into a Tech Lead role or a position with greater impact in software development teams. Over the years, I've learned programming and all over the software development lifecycle. I don't think pursuing an internship is the best path for me. What do you think is the best way to demonstrate my skills and knowledge? I was considering dedicating myself to creating complete products/projects-Mobile, BE, and Web.

i think it's a yes and a no at the same time. She did stress the point of building those as a sole-proprietor business. And I would assume the key difference here is having this app as a business requires you to constantly maintain it and already apply it in real-world, whereas having a project built just as is to be laid out for presentation purposes does not convey the same feel to it as the former case (if that makes sense)

@@hectorcryo6768 That is the same thing as a project... this is just logic shenanigans to make a clickbaity video. All this things can be done through the guise of a project if your objective in this project is to have real-world experience and mantaining a product. Having the app as a business is just a poor excuse to say "this isn't a project" and it probably could be even worse than just making a project since the person might have different expectations, because this is now a "business" and the results are most likely going to be the same either way

This is a great way to learn new skills and contribute to the community. * The speaker argues that hiring managers do not care about your GitHub projects because they are not representative of your real-world skills. Instead, hiring managers are more interested in your internships and other experiences. * The speaker recommends that junior engineers get an internship if they are looking for the best way to build experience. Internships are the gold standard when it comes to experience. * The speaker argues that coding projects are not the best way to differentiate yourself and get hired.
