I think for long time people were into lowering there cars, not normal people obviously. In 2000 I took a mk5 escort with 185/60/14 and replaced them with 205/60/15. In my view it was a huge improvement the handling if anything seemed better and the ride quality over bumpy roads was fantastic. More recently I fitted a mk2 focus 2008 with 215/55/17. Previously it had 205/55/16. they were a tight fit but nothing rubbing anywhere. I think whatever body style suits what the driver wants is what matters. I wouldn't mind putting kuga 235/55/17 tyres on my mk4 mondeo estate and also fitting a lift kit.

Couldn't agree more. We've had our '13 V70 for over four years and put over 50.000 miles on it in that time. It's currently at 125.000 miles and thus far we haven't had any issues. Not one. And that's with the most crap engine/gearbox too, the 1.6 litre petrol Ford lump and the Powershift DCT. Sometimes I think about replacing it but every time I talk myself out of it. I just can't think of another car that will do everything equally well as our old trusty Volvo. It's like your favourite pair of jeans, you slip in them and you just feel at home. I think the police started using SUV cars because. When they were in a pursuit the criminal would often put there car into reverse and come right over the bonnet of the police car and through the windscreen. It's a lot less commen for this to happen in an suv. So it's actually safer not just perception. Also has anyone else noticed that if your surrounded by SUV's in a normal car all you can see is door handles. Of the other cars.
@gravemind653629 күн бұрын
It increases blinspots and they handle far worse and far more likely to roll over so they provide no benefit other than an elevated driving poisition. You do hit a key point though these cars are all bought on feelings and illusions rather than actual facts and common sense.

The 760 (it was actually the V90 facelift, but I don’t want to confuse it with the more recent car) was one of the best cars I’ve ever driven. Estate cars are brilliant - I’ve always preferred them to a saloon and definitely over an SUV. You don’t need to sit so high up - it’s a bit of a status thing, and reinforces that ‘I’m in my safety bubble’ attitude that seems to make our roads so aggressive these days. A friend owned a V70 D5 when his second was born, and I can confirm a 6 foot adult can sit between two child seats in the back in relative comfort. Sadly theirs (which was not the best-kept example ever) developed a number of electrical gremlins that were starting to rack up repair bills, and they were doing almost exclusively urban driving, which was not great for economy so it was let go. But my friend does still have an overall positive memory of his V70, and a lot of it was around how luxurious and comfortable it was. His two Pickles could easily nod off (too easily sometimes).

Great cars and, as you say, sound really good for a diesel (and dare I say much better than most 4pot petrols, too). If anything, my advice would be to avoid the autoboxes - they're not the most reliable of things at higher mileage unless they've been routinely flushed (and many won't have been because Volvo advised against). Beyond that... Honestly, any of the 5 cylinder diesels is a great shout in one of these - whether its the Euro5 D5 like this one, the earlier Euro4 D5 (swirlflaps aside they're very little trouble at all) or its detuned version marked "2.4D) - or the destroked variants, 2.0l 5-pot diesels marked D3 or D4. Great cars and you're absolutely right about them being far more practical and far better value than SUV's. (Speaking of value... Still a big boot but not quite so practical, but the saloon version, the S80, is one of the best bargains on the road IMHO - significantly cheaper than a V70)

IMHO real true V70 stopped with the P2 platform 1998 -2008 then they moved to the Ford platform... the one you're testing that is a compromise and I heard the Volvo engineers had hard time fitting their engineering into this other smaller platform. Anyway, as for Comfort, Safety, Practicality there is no question with these V70 whatever generation. And durability is no compromise, my V70 D5 163 HP from 2006 has passed 310 000 km and it's just running as it should. You can't find a rust point despite the predecessor was living in a ski resort in the Alps, not any oil drop anywhere under the bonnet, diesel consumption very low for such a car ( 5.6 liter/100km on journey, 6.5 on daily commute) and the space inside ! Personally I did as you show in the video, slept into the trunk during a 1 week roadtrip ;-) It's my first Volvo that I bought "3r hand" last December, and I'm just having a smile driving it 😀

Volvo D5s are fantastic. I prefer the smaller P1 chassis V50 as they handle far better, but they are just so comfy and relaxing but actually shift very well when driven hard and smoothly. The best thing though is that they’re generally dirt cheap and run forever. D5 with a remap is generally as quick as a stock T5 too, but without the ruinous fuel economy. In fact my missus wasn’t even driving long before I got her the V50 and she went from hating driving to racing a Corsa VXR off the lights.

I am on my 3rd Volvo Estate (V50, V60 2018 lease and another V60 2013 bought outright) out of 5 Volvo's (C30, S60) - its rather funny timing because I am looking at V70's and XC70's currently, while i can not really fault my V60, the raked / swooping back end does not give it the largest / square boot you would want. I've never cared for image; when it boils down to it, a car for me is a tool to do a "job" - i don't buy into this aspirational rubbish that they try and sell folks on. Other estates are available but i keep coming back to Volvo, not sure what am going to do in future being that the 2018+ V60 and V90's I am not fully on board with (esp the ones with hybrid tech) For this gen of V70 i think you can retro fit the digital clocks (from the 2012 facelift) which imho look better, and while the centre console does date a bit, you can get andriod units to give you carplay and auto (and option of back up cam) Euro 6 dev units are available but they tend to be late 2014 to 2016 and am not sure they did a 5T 2.4 for that, think they might be 4T 2L units; don't quote me there, might be some 5T 2L units. T4 T5 T6 petrol units are availble but rare for the UK Market. Turning , i think this is on 17"' wheels ? - i know that on 18" its like a barge (though you can tweak the bump stops to help slightly) Would be intresting if you could get your hands on a different V70's / XC70's / V60's etc of different years to do a compare ? also a T5/T6 drive ? hit up the Volvos Owners Group ?

Oops, this is me 😂 Switched from a 2002 V40 to a 2014 D4 V70 (facelift with built in kid boosters) last year - cost less than £5k but needed a bit of sorting with DPF and EGR as it has 180k - now it’s sorted I get 50mpg which has surpassed my expectations for the size and weight and being an 8spd auto - not as easy to throw around as the V40 but worth it to get all 3 kids in the back plus luggage - and the newer D4s are in the £35 tax bracket 😊

I love my XC60 T8 R-design pro. I fell into the SUV trap for a dad car... but maybe a V60 Polestar will be a good second dad car 😅

Had a 2008 V70 D5 with Polestar upgrade. Did 60k+ miles. Brilliant package of a car but can be expensive to maintain especially at Volvo prices. Heavy on discs and pads and front tyres only last about 9k. Never got more than mid forties if you sat at 60 or 39/40 at 70. Around Greater London used to get about 28/29 urban. A set of Winter tyres makes a massive difference in colder weather. Load wise I moved my 3 seater Chesterfield settee in it with the tailgate closed. You missed the extra load space under the cover in the boot. Mine was unfortunately written off but someone bought it from Copart and its on the road again. I did elect to buy a Jaguar XE saloon to replace it as I got fed up being asked by family and friends if I could move furniture or collect from Ikea etc! I miss the space. No use for city use now as none of them are ulez or lez compliant.

I can’t believe that Volvo are no longer selling estate cars in the uk! I’ve had three. The first being an 85 240, then a v90 (brief foray into an RS6+) and now back into a V90 cross country.

I still prefer an estate car to a crossover SUV. I have owned a few in my time, from E class Mercs, to VW Golf Estates, and always found them practical and just nicer. I will almost certainly have an MG5 EV estate next, used.

I have an i40 myself and estates are my preference but as someone who works a physical job and with a 2 year old and another one incoming im sick of bending down to get carseats sorted, they are a ballache at the best of times lol. Also the clearance is shocking, struggle to see kerbs when near etc, I feel like the i40 specifically is very low to the ground which isnt ideal on tight roads. Don't think ill fall for an suv/crossover but I i see the appeal. My mate has a newish scenic and its solid, tempting!

I've never understood the purpose of SUVs and "crossovers". Kids are 23 and 28 now but I still need a big car. Currently using a Mazda6 estate. Once bitch - the suspension is far too firm for Britain's destroyed roads. I've always liked the V70 for its comfort and refinement.
@gravemind653629 күн бұрын
Has it got those annoying low profile tyres? Tyres are 70% of the suspension in a car, one of the thing I detest about modern cars is all these giant wheels and low profile tyres that make the ride as stiff as ironing board and cause loads of punctures and blowouts from potholes. It's one reason why if I had to buy a new car it would be a base spec model just to avoid the giant wheels.

Funny enough I had 3.2 V70 same shape P3 it was a rocket ship, after only 3 months of ownership I ploughed it through a Kia Ceed taxi who pulled out without looking, The V70 handled the crash well but interestingly the airbags all failed which was quite bad considering the damage the kia was a mess. I now have a mk4 Mondeo estate which is based on the same platform as the V70 but I find the mondeo much more engaging to drive, it has more rear space and the boot very similar in size. I actually question if Ford actually did a better Job.

D5 in V70 is fine engine. Nice sound above 2500 rpm and decent fuel economy. Mine had 337 kkm behind I had to sold it. Wife wanted XC90 2.0 D5. And that thing is really annoying house on 4 wheels. V70 is dadmobil. Boring, dull but has more space in trunk than XC90 and works ......

@@crofter Yes, but generally cars from the 70s till end of the 90s were much more reliable and stable. In my long term experience Toyota and Honda were the best cars and I'm looking for an Honda Accord Diesel or Toyota Avensis Diesel, but at this time very rare to find them on the market. People which own these Japan brands don't want to sell them. They know which are the most reliable cars and let you sleep relaxed in the nights 😁. My father owns a Mercedes and he had many problems with it. It'S not without reasons said "German cars are good enough for repairing shops, but Japan's make cars for the people 😁"
