while I get this is a bit of fun guys, this is an extremely dangerous invention. Many trappers have been injured with rabbit traps let alone bear traps. If something goes wrong ……………….. while knives and swords aren't exactly kids toys they are much safer than these spring powered traps. don't misunderstand, I think you guys are some of the best entertainment on KZbin, and I look daily to see if you have produced another video. I just think you two Superstars are better than Saquatch traps - a lot better

Oh Jeez. Ok fine Alec/Will, make a quick string pull device that drops a large branch or small log into it and keep your distance for testing, not a big deal problem extra solved. I mean Did you watch the entire video? They needed more Force/Weight Ratio and less Friction in the end. lol Not very dangerous. What a great simple project to practice Heavy Forging and Maximizing Spring Force with a standard Alloy. I think a sasquatch trap is an excellent Montana Lore inspired way to both move stock and practice this as well as heavy riveting, fitting and tweaking. Also the fact that an interesting vintage designed device is fabricated is a bonus. I'm sure they'll be safe they've been hammering around with dangerous hot metal and fires for many many years lol

@@acousticpsychosis Lubrication is not the issue. The problem is the pivot point is to close to the spring to overcome the weight of the jaws. Changing the pivot point or reducing the weight of the jaws are the only viable methods. Lubrication doesn't help a simple lever work better. BUT not to completely dismiss you it would help it close faster once it gets past that point. It just won't do anything to fix the current problem.

Probably too late with the video and project already posted, but you should have gotten your hands on a real trap just for comparison sake. There is no way you can use your hands to arm a normal size bear trap. When I saw you kneeling down and pressing the springs down, I instantly thought: "weak springs". A bear trap with only 15" jaws has springs so strong you have to use a c-clamp to get them down. (And maybe your scaled up version would be just too much to work with safely). Still enjoy your work like crazy.
@mtplainsman1068
@mtplainsman1068 5 жыл бұрын
From a former trapper and trap collector, I absolutely agree with the above post. A 30" trap that had springs to match it's size would take a real strong man or two to set by a threaded device, or one man by the use of hydraulics or similar compression. If you can use a Quick clamp to even bring a spring down an inch or two, the springs will not work. The amount of pressure in a spring for a trap that size could not even be fully compressed with the weight of a full sized man standing on top will both feet. I love this project though and I hope you figure this out!
@mtplainsman1068
@mtplainsman1068 5 жыл бұрын
@@bring-out Thats your opinion... I use the proper size trap for each animal. I modify the jaws to be comfortable and I check them often. No animal is ever in a trap for too long. I trap for management and respect "all" wildlife. Culling diseased animals or high populations of predators that are wiping out the prey species is a must and I feel good about doing my part in keeping a good balance in my area. Wait till you see a predator naked from mange or populations so out of control they starve to death death after the food is long gone. Trapping is a great management tool when done responsibly and respectably. I do understand your view and concerns however and realize that many people are just uneducated about this topic.

Writing this mostly for my own notes but if it helps someone else then cool. Add Normalization thermal cycles between Spring Forging Heats and again before quenching, might help with material cracking. Partial area hardening causes stresses and didn't see spring tempering. Springs I thought were tempered to blue? Perhaps larger or different shaped Forge/Furnace/Quench Tank/ThermalChamber for entire part tempering and normalization cycles would be ideal.

So satisfying to see both power hammers running together!! (@8:30) Great "out of the ordinary" episode, but I notice that this channel's "ordinary" is growing more diverse, and therefore fascinating. Excellent episode, even (and perhaps especially) with "failure." :)

More spring tension and smoother surfaces. Hot wax the whole thing after smoothing the surfaces more. Multiple repeat tests will smooth the exact areas that need it the most. Also, how is the trigger involved? Does it push up one jaw to get the jaws moving?

making the loops on the Springs bigger will help the most, because you are lengthening the lever, which pushes the jaws up.

From a blacksmith that has made a steel trap before the key is to make the top whole of the spring wide enough to reach further out on the jaws. It acts like a lever and can shut faster with a heavier weight jaw.

They won't catch one with this trap. 1. It's to smart and aware of any new things in it's woods to step in it unless distracted by humans with guns. 2. If a alpha stepped in this it would not break it's femur as they have incredibly dense bones, it would enrage it mostly. 3. A squatch would see these knuckle heads as soon as they stepped three foot into the woods and would watch them tell they left. 4. Where there are one big foots there are four big foots, the one that's keeping your attention and the other three that are flanking your ass in a ambush attack. They will eat your soft guts and stuff the rest of you under a tree and no one will ever find you. Best to just leave em be.

Another issue to take into consideration for your trap is friction. If you polished up the contact surfaces between the jaws and the springs to about a 400 grit finish, it will let the springs slide much more smoothly once they get started.
