I mean Did you watch the entire video? They needed more Force/Weight Ratio and less Friction in the end. lol Not very dangerous. What a great simple project to practice Heavy Forging and Maximizing Spring Force with a standard Alloy. I think a sasquatch trap is an excellent Montana Lore inspired way to both move stock and practice this as well as heavy riveting, fitting and tweaking. Also the fact that an interesting vintage designed device is fabricated is a bonus. I'm sure they'll be safe they've been hammering around with dangerous hot metal and fires for many many years lol

Probably too late with the video and project already posted, but you should have gotten your hands on a real trap just for comparison sake. There is no way you can use your hands to arm a normal size bear trap. When I saw you kneeling down and pressing the springs down, I instantly thought: "weak springs". A bear trap with only 15" jaws has springs so strong you have to use a c-clamp to get them down. (And maybe your scaled up version would be just too much to work with safely). Still enjoy your work like crazy.
@mtplainsman10685 жыл бұрын
From a former trapper and trap collector, I absolutely agree with the above post. A 30" trap that had springs to match it's size would take a real strong man or two to set by a threaded device, or one man by the use of hydraulics or similar compression. If you can use a Quick clamp to even bring a spring down an inch or two, the springs will not work. The amount of pressure in a spring for a trap that size could not even be fully compressed with the weight of a full sized man standing on top will both feet. I love this project though and I hope you figure this out!
@mtplainsman10685 жыл бұрын
@@bring-out Thats your opinion... I use the proper size trap for each animal. I modify the jaws to be comfortable and I check them often. No animal is ever in a trap for too long. I trap for management and respect "all" wildlife. Culling diseased animals or high populations of predators that are wiping out the prey species is a must and I feel good about doing my part in keeping a good balance in my area. Wait till you see a predator naked from mange or populations so out of control they starve to death death after the food is long gone. Trapping is a great management tool when done responsibly and respectably. I do understand your view and concerns however and realize that many people are just uneducated about this topic.

Writing this mostly for my own notes but if it helps someone else then cool. Add Normalization thermal cycles between Spring Forging Heats and again before quenching, might help with material cracking. Partial area hardening causes stresses and didn't see spring tempering. Springs I thought were tempered to blue? Perhaps larger or different shaped Forge/Furnace/Quench Tank/ThermalChamber for entire part tempering and normalization cycles would be ideal.

@@UAPJedi Why would they do the exact same thing people were complaining about just a little while back, by making a series of videos.

Should put some layers into your steel when you make springs.. Keeps them from cracking. You’re going for flexibility, not strength, per se.
@jessetheunending93575 жыл бұрын
Actually, they need to go for both. But I think you have 1 of 2 steps. They also need to enlarge the hoop on one of the springs, imo

Just imagine... You are born and raised in the somewhat normal UK. Then you move to Montana and get asked to build a Sasquatch trap.

UK and normal... strange combination of words...🤣

I am sure it's a shock moving from a nanny state like the UK to Montana. I saw a video earlier where the London police confiscated a spoon.

Good to see thousands of dollar's worth of equipment and materiel allocated towards such a worthy endeavor. Truly this is what makes the human race exceptional. Catching mythical beasts with overpowered mechanical engines of death! Carry on gentlemen, we'll be watching.
