For some reason the KZbin algorithms didn't decide to share this with me, so I'm catching up rather late on this. As many other commentators have already said, these are some of your very best videos. And you couldn't hope for a better gift.

While I love all of the videos of your more grand-scale projects, these videos of small one-off projects borne of your creative spark are still my favorite of all. Watching you take a spontaneous vision or idea and lovingly craft it into existence (to your obvious delight) is among the most uplifting experiences I am graced to witness. Your ingenuity, imagination, and craftsmanship are unmatched. Thank you for sharing these gems!

As someone stuck behind a desk all day I still find it fascinating to watch you work Max. Thanks for sharing this little adventure.

What's so engaging about this project is your process - too often one gets the impression it's all about application of skills - here, you share the thinking and the exploration. While it's obviously the product of experience, it is most satisfying to see ideas being worked through and solutions evolved. A beautiful gift, Max.

I found the "ding!" of the dinky little oven almost unbearably adorable. That silly comment out theway, the whole video is a testament to your hard work, inventiveness and attention to detail. Anyone would be chuffed to get such a wonderful gift - thanks for sharing the gift of its manufacture with all of us. All the best to your beloved on their birthday.

A wonderful present for your partner Max. Repurposed from you Grandfather's old inch chisel. That is a nice bit of English tool steel, no doubt made in Sheffield a hundred years or so ago. It might even be crucible cast steel, you never know.( unless it was stamped on it lol ) and the hickory would have been my first choice .

Reminds me a bit of the sickle used by Getafix, the druid in Asterix (who's name I just had to look up and I've only just got the joke in his name 35 years after I first read any Asterix books!). Looks beautiful though, anyone would be honoured to receive such a thing. Love watching your work, Max. Nothing like leaving it to the last moment, eh? 😁

I was just about to make the same comment Steve ... I wonder if herbs cut by Max's partner will also create a superhuman strength potion :) ... Max - great work, very interesting watching the process - much better than throwing old stuff away doing that, and I hope you wrapped it up with those cut wild flowers when giving it to the missus ... Wow, there's something so heartwarming about this video. Plus the great news that Max has a partner! As someone who came here years ago for the Land Rovers and Project Awesome I didn't think I'd manage an hour about a herb sickle but I watched and enjoyed every minute. Max what a joy to see your skills honed to perfection. I am sure it was well received. Strangely I have been using my Grandfathers inch and half chisel from 1906 doing flooring. Panicked for a day when it disappeared. Thankfully found in a safe place and not buried under the oak floor. Old tools really are a joy to use and re-purpose. Thank you for the video.

While a traditional heat treatment might be preferable, work hardening would have been an option aswell. Traditional sickles are generally work hardened, and since no heavy cutting operation is presumably taking place the work hardening is generally sufficient.

A herbicikle..... sound like something a stoner would ride to the shops 😂Nice on max, looks great! I started getting into lathes a few years ago, about the time you made some lathe chisels from old files..... from all the guys i learnt from here on YT they all say sand at a lower speed, is there a reason you sped up the lathe?
@maximusironthumper2 жыл бұрын
It's how I was taught to do it as a child! I've always sanded as fast as the machine will go, I'm just careful to keep the paper moving and have a light touch towards the end.

I personally admire what you do which really inspired me to do the same. I would like to live completely off grid, the way you do, but the only thing a can't put my head around is that how do I pay for the car insurance and keep my bank account if I live in a barn like that since they ask for a permanent postal address? I guess I would need to apply for a planning permission, (if the council accepts it), or does the land have a postal address that insurance companies and banks accept? How can that be solved? Any ideas?

Check out a knife sharpening system called 'Razor Sharp edgemaking system'. Its two 8 inch MDF disks that you mount onto a bench grinder. They make your knives shaper than anything I have come across. Wranglerstar did a nice video on them.
