really good clear advice. i made my first coil spring knife a week or so back and could have done with these tips! I learnt about working with coil spring at too low temperature making a few corkscrews. A few cracks and the set back is huge! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I'm glad I could help! Coil spring can be a pain and depending on its source, you can run into a whole host of problems but it is a good steel to practice with and, well treated, it can make some perfectly serviceable blades. I think I've only had two ever fail- other than that, all coil spring blades I have ever made have worked brilliantly and have been good, durable knives.

love the video mate, i'm wondering what oil you use when quenching your spring steel? and where would be a good place to buy some?

Hi there, I'm glad tou liked it! At the time I was using a mix of different oils in one quench tank and they were a tad too harsh for some of the tougher steels. Now I use rye oil which it's much better and can be purchased in different grades. I get mine from www.groundflatstock.com/
