If you put your magnet inside a Ziploc freezer bag BEFORE you start to use it, you can then reverse the bag, pull out the magnet & dump all of your metal shavings into the trash can. Without pulling them off your magnet....Work smarter not harder.

I made a knife out of a (manual) sheep shear blade and found the metal exceptionally hard. Maybe you could make Damascus out of cut-up shears? Another idea is to use the cutting bits of the mechanical sheep shears or barber shop cutter blades. The filaments of electric shavers could also be an option. Cheers out of an autumn South Africa!

Could you have gotten more swarf packed in there nicely had you left one side of the cannister open, using a die that fit into the cannister to compact the contents directly, at least during the first round of forge welding? Just a stupid question.

I may be wrong, but 1080 is simple carbon steel? so it etches dark, right? which means, looking at the end result, you had far more powder than shavings. I think this was a very good physics study in density 😎👍
