The Woodland Escape

3 жыл бұрын

Peter finishes blacksmithing new hinges for the door on his log cabin. He hangs the door with some difficulty. He fastens the hinges using forged rose bud nails.
He retrieves his deer hides that have been rinsing in the stream, to continue the tanning process. He discusses the bucking solution and demonstrates removing the membrane from the hides. The rooster continually interrupts his narrative. Once the membrane is removed, the hide is put in an acidic bath and then dried in the sun, in preparation for being put in the tanning solution.

My forefathers went to Utah in 1860 from England. They were iron workers and their first tasks were to make what seemed an obvious need in those days among settlers : nails and also a primitive type of stove. Watching this I can see that there were other very important uses for iron made artefacts including hinges, horse shoes, wheel rims and the like ...... we take it for granted these days, but iron was the black gold of the 19th century......
@TheWoodlandEscape
@TheWoodlandEscape 3 жыл бұрын
The iron workers of the day were the most valued tradesmen in any settlement. The list is a long one of the essential things they produced. As you mentioned, nail, wheels but, also plow shears, utensils, cast iron items, king pins for wagons and axle suspension items, fire arm items for the home built muskets, such as butt plates, trigger guard etc. and the list goes on.

It’s funny what’s considered gross to us today that was commonplace years ago. My mom was raised on a homestead in the boonies. One of her favorite treats to eat growing up was squirrel brains. Now even she says she can’t imagine eating it.

For the acid part for the tanning of the hide, i think Urine was used traditionally as well. Or maybe I am thinking of setting Dyes. Some sort of textile production used urine

Love the cabin surgeries, but I wish you had numbered them. It would be easier to follow step-by-step that way. Or maybe I missed it somehow. I digitize old 16mm film on my channel there are a couple films you might enjoy. A lot of old educational stuff from the 60s mostly and old mom and Pops films. I'm curious if you've thought about caulking or "weatherstripping" for the door? I know that the Norse, and Anglo-Saxons used moss, rope, other things to caulk boat hulls. Leather baffles have been used to help block gaps in other things. Are you considering something for your door to block the cold air and wind around the frame and door - if so, what? Thanks!

How's that door-latch supposed to work? It slides beautifully, but seems like there's a bit missing to make it actually work as a latch... then again, maybe it's just that you forgot to film that and didn't think anyone would care about that part? well, I do! Not in that "hah, gotcha!"-way, just in a "I'd be interested to see the finished door latch"-way. :-) Also, is there some way to secure the door from inside? I saw the stick that lets you slide the latch from inside, and that's good - but let's say an angry person with an axe and severely hostile intentions is outside, is there some way to keep the door shut while you load your musket, or is this a door that primarily relies on being far far out in the Canadian wilderness for security?
