2 жыл бұрын

Peter finishes making a step-back cabinet for his 1700's log settler's cabin. He finishes it with milk paint and discusses the history of milk paint and the use of pine for building Canadiana furniture on the frontier.
Using brain tanned deer hide, he sews a shooting bag for a friend. He discusses "what's in the bag", what a hunter required to shoot and maintain his flint lock. This included, tow, priming horn, ball bag for lead cast balls, flint wallet, turn screw, worm, bullet puller, bear fat for greasing patches, bullet mold. In addition to the shooting bag, a hunter would carry a powder horn and a shot bag.
He gives a tutorial and demonstrates how to use an inkle loom to weave a sash for his shooting bag and discusses the history and design of the loom.

I remember one of my machinist mentors telling me a story about his high school, Woods shop instructor. He was going over the tools and pointing out which tools were to be used for what and through part of the presentation he pulls out a 16 ounce ball peen hammer, and very clearly firmly and succinctly stating that if he ever seen someone drive a nail with a ball peen hammer he was gonna make them pull the nail out with it.😂 I think about that every time I grab the nearest hammer that is most certainly a ball peen and drive a mail with it. 🤣

Whilst preparing the fare on yon three legged stool, my friend. I would like stewed mutton or venison with carrots, wild onions, garlic, corn and sourdough cornbread, please for which I will pay you most handsomely. Early Windsors produced in the woods by Bodgers with little more than a pole lathe and a hatchet. All from green wood, quality varied from bodger to bodger and prices paid were low. Quite likely many bodgers made it from England to the frontier.

FYI, on the musket ,reason they didn’t stain on the barrel channel,lock or trigger guard or under any metal is that they used aquafortis on the stock and if you put it in those areas it would eat the metal because it was acidic.. love your cabin, would love to have a place like that👍😊

LOVE that workbench! Those 18th c. Windsor chairs are beautiful, but they look like they belong in some drawing room in a Boston townhouse. Did they have chairs that nice and fancy in the pioneer cabins? I would expect more of a country ladderback chair that the pioneer could make from green wood with a oak splint seat.

No but, it is a milk paint and I believe it is called Voyager Red.

I live in tide water Virginia and was wondering if you might know someone close by me who could help me with an old flintlock black powder rifle that my Dad made, he passed before we had time to to teach me about it.

I’m afraid I don’t but, if you do a google search of historical reenactment groups in your area you’ll surely find the help you need.

A loft at one end of the cabin and sleeping pallets rolled out at night and stowed away during daylight hours.

Would a poor settler have used nails so freely; maybe wooden nails or pegs instead? Would a poor settler have used a perfectly useful workbench as a countertop? Wouldn't it make more sense to use it as...a workbench?
@TheWoodlandEscape
@TheWoodlandEscape 5 ай бұрын
You are right on both counts. I did use wooden pegs in different part of the construction on door and window frames etc. Surviving 18th century furniture if built crudely, say by a booger would have been pegged but, finer furniture was nailed.
