Max I can only imagine the excitement you must feel getting this close to such a large project. The panic alone would be overwhelming lol. That place looks amazing and is definitely on the bucket list of places to visit. I'm going to have to plan another trip I guess 😊

Thank you for this video, it was very informative. I'd like to get into making large sculptures like this in the future and the idea with the rebar being bent to give it more hold in the concrete makes perfect sense. If I'm ever in that part of California I'll visit the mission and see the piece for myself! Greetings from Nor-Cal!

You are an amazing gentle giant and all your works reflect that about you. Why did you choo a 7018 stick to build welded all of this. A mig would of been much faster and no structural benefit from stick is going to out weight the need over a mig weld
@Max_Randolph_Studios
@Max_Randolph_Studios Жыл бұрын
That’s a great question! I went stick because this was going to be an outdoor build, and my area gets a lot of wind in the afternoons. The shielding gases with 7018 hang around a lot better than my MiG welder does
@doodysdaggers
@doodysdaggers Жыл бұрын
How did you keep that plate from warping as you welded the grid on top of it?
@Max_Randolph_Studios
@Max_Randolph_Studios Жыл бұрын
Now that’s a fantastic question! I started by tacking the entire lattice in place to establish the structure. Then took my time intermittently welding across the entire plate, so that there were no hot spots

Great video - hurry up w the next one 😊 How did concrete get up in those steel grid voids under the base plate or was the intention to keep that area hollow? Following from Newfoundland, Canada!

Cool! I watched again and it doesn’t look like you fully welded the seams between the top plate and the grid bars so the air can escape there. Can’t wait to see the limbs coming together!
