In this one I cut a 20 sided die from Bumblebee Jasper. I learn a few lesions on health and safety but we end up with a beautiful piece for a fan.

@@MattWeber After the lap gets dry (which happens very fast) some of the dust do get into the air, that's why he said "there was a sulfur smell" at 1:25. It also happens with sillica while cutting quartz, so using a mask or a respirator IS necessary for long term exposure
@Scarodactyl
@Scarodactyl 11 ай бұрын
Just spitballing, but if you cut it without respiratory protection I'd guess it's more likely you breathed in some sulfur which I think is probably more prevalent in there than arsenic and which can irritate the lungs. Always good to wear respro even if it's annoying.
@GameDesignerJDG
@GameDesignerJDG 11 ай бұрын
I wouldn't mess with it. Arsenic is a slow killer. Small amounts accumulate over time. I'd strongly recommend taking serious precautions if trying to cut a mineral that has hazardous properties. Cutting creates dust and dust ends up in peoples' bodies easier than you'd think. The only safe amount of heavy metal exposure is 0. After that, it's not easy to calculate risk vs reward.
@Scarodactyl
@Scarodactyl 11 ай бұрын
@@GameDesignerJDG I wouldn't cut it myself either tbh. I also wear a p100 respirator while cutting gems of any kind, though some would consider it overkill.

@@boticland4342 It can be done with proper PPE and shop filtration, but that adds cost and effort that is presumably beyond what he wants to put in, particularly for a one-off. Arsenic poisoning longers, so you need filtrating ventilation of the work area in addition to masking, and the appropriate mask is somewhat expensive and restrictive for constant wear like you would need for this.

Gorgeous. Glad you were able to finish one die. It's really too bad some minerals are toxic. What kinds of safety precautions would you want before you could consider returning to dice with potentially dangerous minerals? Just curious about the... logistics? of lapidary. Not really saying it's a good idea.
@JustAnotherBuckyLover

The only real problem would be the dust. As he's using a wet grinding method for most of the work, the dust is already going to be minimised, but ideally, you would need a good quality respirator while working with it, and maybe a good ventilation system if you do a lot of work with those stones. It's also potentially an idea to wear nitrile gloves while cleaning out the water/sludge mixture, but in reality, as long as he promptly washes his hands with soap and water, that should be enough. In reality, as long as he's not licking the stone or breathing in lots of dust, he'll be fine. If you plan to make more than one, then you definitely need to be looking at that respirator, though.

As a Toxicological ,I would recommend a complete cleaning of all of the equipment that you used during the grinding and polishing of this stone. The dust is not your only thing that you have to worry about. All the paste on your grinding and polishing disks are now contaminated with arsenic. I would suggest getting brand new disks as the arsenic, left on the disks you used, NEVER totally goes away. Each and every single time that you use the disks afterwards causes arsenic to be released back into your lab. Please for your health and your fans peace of mind DO A THOROUGH CLEANUP. I want you to make many more dice and not see you getting sick.

I have worked with materials for a long time. While they won't cause bacterial infections, the damaged tissue from the presence of such toxins will make one more susceptible to respiratory infection. Wear the proper ventilator for high dust operations. Ps. Just saw your dustmask, i would definitely suggest a silicon respirator with pancake filters designed for dust and volatile organic compounds. If you are concerned with contamination then thats the best course of action. Hard to get a good fit with a beard though... you can get forced air supply or an extracting unit to step up your health and safety game. You buy the right equipment to make beutiful art, now buy the right equipment to protect yourself as well! Much appreciation to you and your channel, take care!

Beautiful result! For future consideration, maybe invest in a pressure pot to stabilize fractured or crumbly stones by permeating every fissure with clear (or complementary coloured) resin? It sure would widen the types of stone you could work with! Peter Brown on KZbin has a bunch of pots and processes for stabilizing all sorts of materials for lathe turning. Also, if your do end up working with other toxic stones (there are a surprising number of them - yay stone-carving workshops run by ex-quarrymen!) maybe consider investing in vacuum/dust/fume hood or at least a reusable chemical/dust filter mask (though really, fine particulate in the arsenic realm probably warrants a full face setup to keep it out of your eyes/tear ducts).
