Some parts of the narrative overlaid others, at some parts the narrative jerked away from what was being said - Clearest where you were explaining about the IAR 80s being recalled for home defence & showing the fuel refinary ............. Which if memory serves might have been destroyed by USAF B25 Mitchells out of Italy (rather then the B24 Liberators you mentioned).

@@laure5333 A few quick checks later ....... and I'm puzzled. Seems you're right that all the raids on the Ploiești refinery was by B24 Liberators. But Five bombardment groups - 20 squadrons - of the Ninth and Twelfth Air Forces did operate in Europe. For sure B25s were used in Italy - They're kind of the background stars of 'Catch 22'.

It could outfight the Yak-1, regarded as the best fighter of its time, and could also outmaneuver the P-38 in the hands of a skilled pilot. It was good for its time, but by 1944 you have the P-51D, KI-84, Spitfire XIV, FW-190D-9 and other massively powerful engine driven planes.

I thoroughly enjoyed the video. My father Mircea Grossu Viziru was the General Director of the IAR plant in Brasov during the war. His team was responsible for the creation of the IAR 80. We left Romania in 1944. In 2005 I had an opportunity to visit Bucharest and was taken to visit the air museum there where they had the last IAR 80 in existence. It truly is a beautiful plane. Thanks you for producing this memorable video.

Wish they'd been able to have facilities to reproduce BMW 801 radials for these. this plane could have become an absolute beast with that powerplant. Pity the Germans weren't very forthcoming, until later when they lent bf109s when they were desperate. As with most Romanian aircraft at the time, the powerplant was lackluster, leaving the pilots to have to fly to their weaknesses not their strengths.. damn they did well, regardless.

compared to mainstream fighter planes of WWII , it's a pity that this nice looking war bird has been forgotten ... it appears to be an underestimated aircraft, if you consider that was more agile a lower altitudes than the Lockeed P-38 ... it is astonishing , and proves that building formidable aircraft isn't just a privilege or bigger nations ... two thumbs up, because I've learned something new today, thank you Sir ! Nice Job !

In all fairness 38's were never meant for low altitude work. because of their size and weight they thrive on the low density air of high altitude and the Turbo-Superchargers only really start to show themselves past about 15,000 feet. Now had that fight taken place at a higher altitude I'm pretty confident the 38's would've made it home with a few kills. I'm not saying IARs were bad, in fact I actually rather like them. but that fight does need to be put into context. And it just helps prove the old adage of "It doesn't matter how good your plane is if you're flying it wrong."

@@Wasparcher1 In the case of those P-38s, your reply need a bit of a...nuance : The P-38 Lightnings were, with no question, great planes, the pilots flew them well (they, only...navigate them wrong ! LOL !) but - here comes - the overall mission parameters were, clearly, wrong...which in the end turned the whole thing into a mess of epic proportions !!! It looks like the planning of that mission had serious weak points, particularly in the intelligence department, which put the planners in the situation of not exactly knowing what really they're up against...thus explaining the later chain of wrong choices. The P-38 was a good choice for a low altitude bombing surprise attack...if the surprise was achieved. Well...unfortunately, surprise was not achieved but it looked like none of the planners ever playied the scenario of..."what if not...then what...?" Planners weren't aware of IAR-80s and its technico-tactical performances, particularly of it's extraordinary agility at low altitude, let alone of it's residential airfields and it's numbers - even after many years after the end of WW2, former American pilots still believed that, on that day, they were attacked by FW-190s !!! More important, Americans were not aware of how highly skilled were those battle hardened Romanian pilots of ARR flying their IAR-80s !!!

@Wasparcher1 3 жыл бұрын
@@laure5333 Ahhh nuance, always fun. Though to be fair, I never said 38's weren't a great plane (They very much are), just that they were being used in the wrong way. 38's really never liked low altitude, later models were able to perform much better thanks to hydraulic boosters in the flight controls and the addition of dive breaks to help with the really horrible compression they suffered from at high speed that made them unable to pull out of certain dives. They can go fast at low altitude, sure, but maneuvering wise they were sluggish compared to their performance past 15,000-ish feet. Also never said the pilots weren't good pilots just that the planes were being used wrong. Which, when your plane is built from the ground up for high altitude interceptor/escort work and your mission is low altitude bombing, that plane is not being used correctly. The US had better, faster, purpose built low altitude aircraft for this purpose. I struggle to understand why they assigned 38's to it unless it was literally the only available air asset within range but I mean... really? You're right in the regard that the piss poor planning is what got those birds shot down but I respectfully disagree that the 38 was in any way a good choice for a low altitude mission.

It really deserve respect and appreciation, not only giving the very hard situation,but also for the engineers that did design it,for the mechanics who did maintain those planes and not the least for the pilots that flew them! They have been brave,they fought well and many died.And many of them became aces. Few talk about them because of Romania's politics during WW II, but this has nothing to do with the achievements of romanian engineers and fighter pilots. They were simply remarkable!

There was a very capable aircraft factory close to the city of Brasov in the city of Ghimbav (Weidenbach, this used to be a German area of Transylvania). The factory was bombed by the Americans in 1944 April 16th and May 6th - they were dismantled after WW2 as the Soviets did not want the Romanians building their own aircraft. The factory was transformed into an agricultural tractor factory that was quite successful even exported tractors to Iran and Turkey and other places. When communism ended this factory was dismantled and sold for scraps (of course with huge corruption), now there is nothing there ... and Romanians are buying John Deere tractors and a few used F-16s are their best aircraft. That is the story of Eastern Europe: going from innovation and self-sufficiency to serfdom of the Soviets and now the Americans.

Romania could not make a jet engine for a supersonic plane nor could it make a 800+ hp. diesel engine for it's tanks. Same problem with the IAR 80/81, the platform was there but not the weapons and engines. it's funny you mention that... Most people who know about this plane that aren't massive history nerds like us, are Warthunder Players. Where it resides on the Italian Tech tree as a premium plane. I own one, it's fun if a little underwhelming in the game (Though that has to do with the meta of the game itself). Tends to get stuck into a low level ground attack role. But it can dogfight against people who put themselves in a bad position or let themselves get distracted. It's almost like a Romanian FW-190A with the way it handles, fast rolls, nice dives, slower turns, great for boom and zoom fighting. If only it had access to a more powerful engine, it's climb rate, poor energy retention, and top speed really let it down against later war designs or anything with an altitude advantage...

Remarkably, the greatest loaded, air superiority fighter weight was around 5780 lbs, which is phenominal for an improvised sheet welded and tube central fusilage structure. It did not use the Claude Dornier, Hugo Junkers, Dr Richard Voight Electrosol method. Its a mass was roughly 980 to 1060 lbs less than the FW 190. Curiously, with the 1140 hp LeRhone or the 1160;hp Bristol Taurus it had a small ceiling advantage on the Butcher Bird.

Great video on this very interesting plane from my country. I knew about it since I was little, because there were all kinds of articles and books written about it, even comics believe it or not. It was a great design in the early period of WWII yet after a few years, problems with the engine availability and poor armament relegated it to mostly hopeless air defense against superior aircraft. Great handling skills from experienced pilots were not enough to supplement the now outdated design and switched to BF-109s. It is however a great underdog story if U will and proves that good designs did appear even in this part of Europe.

The US military-industrial complex also invested heavily in the GERMAN war machine: Ford in Cologne built trucks for the Wehrmacht. GM built a whole new plant especially meant for Wehrmacht-trucks in Brandenburg in the 1930s, which was run by American staff until December 1941. Boeing held about 30% shares in Focke-Wulf. Standard Oil (ESSO) supplied German submarines in the Caribbean through their oil fields in Venezuela and hired tankers until 1943 ... Some of these - even back then - global players tried to sue the US government after the war for bombing their factories and holdings in Germany. IIRC that didn't work out too well and some caught heavy fines.

@CipiRipi00 That "Legiunea Arhanghelului Mihail" sounds like "Legion of the Archangel Michael". Strange name for a fascist party. Very good points you've made. German resources were so few, they just could not afford to share much. Not to forget that the German war production was just slowly increasing from 1942 onwards and only reached its peak in 1944, when it was already too late. As an example, the USA produced more aircraft than all other WW2 participants together, at least as many tanks as Russia and twice as many war ships as England. Not to mention the huge amount of trucks, freighters, food, oil, fuel, steel, aluminium, ammunition, small arms and even uniforms, with which they supplied their allies.

In Warthunder this is my "go-to" plane in Italian mixed battles from 2.3 to 4.3, but basically because there is no better option for an attacker. As a fighter; while it has good armament the weakness of the engine puts a huge toll on the performance. (+ Good thing there's a German cammo for the plane, cuz I'd never play under a romanian insignia specially in a Italian tree!)

@laure5333
@laure5333 6 жыл бұрын
My uncle was part of the last few graduating series of flying officers which were licensed as fighter pilots on IAR-80, after WW2. I remember him mentioning often the advanced trainer Nardi FN.305 which was used for the last stage of training prior to start the training on the actual fighter planes. Apparently, due to its constructive and flying characteristics, the FN.305 achieved the spine-chilling reputation as one of the most "unforgiving" trainers, ever, which explains the subsequent rate of accidents and casualties. However, once finished the advanced training on Nardi, the very high level of flying skillls so achieved, was always making the transition to actual fighter planes training much more easy. Anecdotally, there were reports of young pilots which have been heard saying : "If I flew the Nardi, from now on I can fly anything else...!"

Never heard of this aircraft,, I guess it had much to do with negative PR,, especially when it outclassed the P38's in a big way. Never too old to learn something new,, From what I have learned over the last few years there is a large amount of history that has been penned out of just not talked about much throughout the years going way , way back.
@Wasparcher1
@Wasparcher1 4 жыл бұрын
it didn't really outclass 38's... well ok Ranking aircraft as better or worse ina general sense is honestly very difficult. Not all aircraft are built for the same purposes. P-38's were built as High level Escorts and Interceptors. Their engines and aerodynamics were built to perform at altitudes of 15,000 feet plus where weight and drag aren't as big of a deal due to the thinner air. IAR's were an early war design built for lower altitudes of below 15,000 feet. That particular dogfight pitted a bunch of 38's being used in the wrong altitude, with pilots unfamiliar with the area, their only advantage over the IAR's would've been straightline speed (In terrain where they needed maneuverability and couldn't just pour on the speed in a straight line). The I.A.R.'s had an altitude advantage, had first sight of their enemy, in an aircraft built for performance at low altitudes, they knew the area, and had a definite maneuverability advantage over a heavy twin boom 38. It was literally a perfect situation for the I.A.R.'s and their pilots. Had any of those factors been changed that whole fight could've gone differently. but then again... what if's... I really like the I.A.R.'s but when it gets right down to it, outside of a very select few situations I would not say the 80's are better than a 38, they just managed to be perfect for that exact type of engagement.

It didn’t outclass the P38. It was just a poorly planned mission by the American command that made the P38s getting ambushed at low altitude.

Aircraft design and production is limited to just a few companies, and fewer countries. Seems that back then, aircraft design and production was in more countries. Like these Romanian planes, I bet there were many planes designed and built around the world in the 20's and 30's. These planes must be forgotten about now. I wonder how good they were? After all, some of the best planes were designed and built in Canada, that large but small frozen country to the North. Were planes designed in South America? Spain? etc.
