I believe that relay is a rear window defrost relay. They moved them around a little in the 70's but that's the only one that was in the engine compartment... It seems like most Ghias did NOT have the rear window defrost, so you don't see them that often... My 74 vert had one mounted to the firewall when I got it. I never reinstalled it after the restoration. Something tells me I won't be chipping ice off that car ever again.

Back in 1974 a friend had a convertible karman ghia. He put a good stereo in it. At the drag strip he recorded the sound of a top fuel dragster. With the top down at a red light he would play the tape. Cranked all the way up. It confused a lot of people.

@@5150mxVW I just helped with a rescue of a 1984 Vanagon GL and a 1987 Vanagon GL Syncro from over in Centerville, WI. I took a Ryobi 18v air compressor with me. It aired up all eight tires on one 9AH battery. Those things are really handy to have.

that's a vac operated dash pot for emissions. It holds the throttle open a hair to reduce rich mix on deceleration.

I started driving in 1974 in the UK and I used to say stuff like - Seat belts are dangerous. What if I crash into a harbour or river - how would I get out ??? If the car rolled I would be trapped upside down. For crying out loud..............btw that engine will run for sure.
