Good morning Matt, i enjoy my morning Coffee watching your video 's. I have the Herters book, Joe's Panther page page 142, was invented by George Herter in 1962 and named after Joseph Herter. Love the history in books like this.

I was just watching a New Fly Fisher video pursuing northern Ontario brook trout and the host spoke highly of the Joe's Panther streamer, which he said was his father's favorite brook trout fly going back to the 1960s and host has caught fish with it from Labrador to Argentina. Thank you for sharing the pattern here, I'll give it a try fishing the Lake Superior tribs for resident brookies and coasters.

Gotta have the flash. Love Flys invented by the tyer. I rarely follow patterns. Maybe because I had the old books as a kid. Creativity and catchability always intrigued me. Making up a fly that catches is priceless. Tight lines!

I think you'd like this book! Mine is actually a 7th printing of it, so not an original 1941, but probably printed in the 60s. I'm thinking of grabbing another copy as the color plates in mine are a little worn out and I'd like to get a spare copy that I could cut the pages out and frame some of them. They're small pages, but really pretty cool looking.

My name is Joe, and I drink too much coffee But I can't watch enough streamer videos. Good find Matt. Yes, sort of Alexander-ish. Yellow dyed grizzly for the Panther's body hackle and some orange fibers for the tail and the same for a throat would make a good perch imitation. One I like even more is the Frenzy. Tied as a wet fly, like McPhail did, it's a good perch fry imitation. He has a good technique for tying the peacock sword wing too. Thanks Matt!
@SavageFlies10 ай бұрын
OMG, the Frenzy is a great looking fly- and a great name! I just searched and see Davie's video. From 8 years ago. Now I'm going to have to watch it. Just got back from a long weekend at the farm. No fishing- morning temps in the low 20s. I'm getting too old to freeze my tail off not catching anything. I can not catch anything from my couch beside the wood stove. :-)

I actually really like Streamers. When you come up with an old fly tying book I always search the title with pdf at the end. And nine times out of ten somewhere there is a free pdf. So I get to read a cool book from back in the day for free.
@SavageFlies10 ай бұрын
Yes! I do that too Ricky!! But when it looks like a cool one that I might actually want a hard copy, I'll search used on Amazon or Ebay. Sometimes Abe Books has some hard-to-find ones as well. One other way to find cool books is to look in the back of a modern book, like any of Mike Valla's, and he might have hundreds of books in his bibliography. I've found several lesser known books that way. :-)
