My favourite dry fly , It works no matter what way its tied , caught countless trout over the years and one salmon . Works just as well wet too.

Isn’t it more used as a wet fly as that’s in my mind is used as an emerging sedge pattern

One of the times fishing up in Caithness this fly could do no wrong we we’re catching brown trout by the dozen and Davy you know the fly we use most of the time and that’s your fly the Olive Bumble one that we use on the dropper, tight lines and stay safe for 2023 for you and the family.👍🎣👏👏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥃

There is an advantage to a double wing …I use a hair wing as support under outer feather wings on some of my feather wing streamers, helps reduce fowling in my experience! Another pattern for my box! Thanks!👍

A superb wet fly, beautifully tied as always by Davie. If anyone reading this is planning to fish for wild brown trout in the Scottish lochs, this should be in your box. There is something about this fly that makes it indispensable, for me at least. Most will associate it with Ireland, where I think I'm right in saying was its point of origin. It just works for me, especially for the wild brownies. I usually fish it on the middle dropper. I tie it pretty much just as Davie does, colours very similar, but needless to say not as beautifully. Thanks Davie.

Thanks for sharing how you fish the fly. I fish rivers almost exclusively not to say my interest hasn't grown in loch fishing with its beautiful flys and techniques, Thanks to Davie and Lindsay.

When the caddis/sedge are active. We ole hands know that we still need to match the hatch. Different venues hold multiple types of sedge. Even in one day you can have several different hatches. So size and colour needed can and will count. So have Invictas. Peters in multiple guises. I also have them in browns, claret, black, even some with a main body of peacock herl. More options give better choices.

Great tie Davie. Another one to try. Any chance you could do a tutorial on feathers for wings. Where to take them from and what to look for? I do some beating on a local shoot over the winter so have access to a few feathers.......😊

As always Davie a lovely well tied fly. When tying wet flys, would it be an advantage using wire instead of oval tinsel when tying in the rib?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 2 жыл бұрын
Morning Melvyn, The main advantage is that on a dubbed body you will certainly see the rib rather than if you used wire though I feel both are as strong as one another depending on the quality of the oval tinsel though I will use a wire rib when I need to make sure the fly will last or protect a weak material..When I used to tye a few salmon flies especially for Russia I would use a wire rib to make them last a lot longer.. All the very best Davie

I've heard of this pattern but I don't think I've ever seen it, I would remember the double wing, which I have never seen before. What is the purpose of the second wing? More buoyancy? More mass? Thanks Davie!

I have tied double wing depending on the traits of the feathers your using. When tying Spey its common to tie double to support the outer wing. If you are using expensive feathers as the outer you can use a cheaper underwing. Example Buster outer and turkey under.

In ye days of olde, when fly tiers made their hooks out of sewing needles, how'd they sharpen them? Did they sharpen them after tempering them?
