@Timothy Mckee They didn't use sleeves in those days the block was cast iron, and could be bored usually to 60 thousands of an inch in .010, .020, .030, 040 or .060 . A lot of engines today can only go either .010 or .020 and that's all.
@MrShine602

@@bertgrau9246 My 68 had worn cylinders and piston rings out of spec by more than .020, some of em were even broken. Crankshaft thrust bearing was just about missing too, still ran and idled like a champ after 50 years of probably poor neglect. Drove that car everywhere until I rebuilt the motor. Quick hone and some new rings and bearings and she was just as cherry as the day she was built. Barely 1k on my rebuild so far, I hope to run that number up another 99k

@@MrShine602 Good luck to you SIR. I bought an 88 Dodge Dakota from a junk yard, had 172,000 miles. Before I pulled the engine, I did get it running. It ran really bad, smoked at idle, rev it up it smoked, back off it smoked. When I took the engine apart (A 3.9 V6) it had 2 cylinders with broke compression rings, and a couple of worn out valves. So I did a complete reman on the engine. Bored, honed, had everything balanced (New pistons) rods re-sized replaced rod bolts with ARP . I have just over 58,000 miles on it since the reman and it runs great. I hope your car keeps going great for you SIR. I have done a few engines like that when I couldn't afford to do a complete rebuild and had good luck.

I agree. Hence why I want to keep my '94 Buick Roadmaster wagon. I had to delete the A.I.R pump as the system failed and I felt bad for it because I wanted to keep the car all original and complete. Oh well, 330lb/ft of torque and 260hp is plenty fun anyhow. And its Cushy like a cloud! These older cars from the malaise era up to the late-90s, they were distinct from the blobs of metal and plastic nowadays. People are starting to realize and appreciate the older stuff. I say Find it, Restore it, Cherish it.

The 351 Windsor is Ford's bullet proof engine like the Chrysler 318 is. Takes tons of abuse, can be built up nicely. It was such a great engine that Ford used it for over 30 years, Ford dumped the 351 Cleveland after 4 years. Cars like the Galaxie were among the first to get crushed so it actually makes it more rare than the stuff we see every day like camaros, mustangs, vettes etc. You will be surprised how nice it looks with decent wheels and tires. I hope you consider keeping it and making it nice.

My first car was a 1974 Ford LTD with a bad engine. It did run but with a miss. My sister wrecked by dad's 77 LTD so a coworker of my dad swapped the engine from the wreck into my car and made a real good runner. When I returned from basic training I used some money earned to have the rust fixed and paint it. I now had a pretty decent used car for under a $1,000. I had a 1977 Mercury Monarch (think "compact" version of this old galaxie) 2 door that came with a 302. I put a 351W from a van in, cammed up the engine and added a four barrel to that car. It was a super comfortable ride, and I wasn't afraid to take it everywhere. Mopar 15-inch rims looked good on it. I finally retired it due to rust and lack of parts availability - the bumper fell off when it was being unloaded at the private junkyard it went to. Turns out it even had a ford 9-inch underneath, so parts of it lived on. The drivetrain lived on in a 1981 Ford Thunderbird.

That "Bad Larry " deserves to be made road worthy and run as much as possible, a rubbermaid with some sand and goonspoon with a set of snowys , you got your self a sweet winter beat

Great video, Dylan! These cars are so under appreciated, nice to see one getting some love. I would love to see it either restored, or honestly just straightened out enough to be roadworthy and enjoyed. I'm so happy you were there for it. Like I read in the comments earlier, "that thing is a fighter!"

My parents got a two door from my Grand parents. The doors were so big you could still get out without the person sitting in front getting out! They all rusted out here in Canada, but it was a comfortable ride for sure!

Sounds like a 8N tractor! My grandfather left me a 2 door 1972 LTD but I couldn't get it out of the barn and had no money to fix it. Still kills me when I think about it. I really wanted it.

Typically not much of a Ford guy, but I was so happy to see this great old giant fire up and perform like a BEAST! The Banana Boat, great name for it! Please do fix it up. It sure will be a rare sight one day, as if it isn't already.

You said that they aren't that desireable but I have to disagree with you. You can't find a two door Galaxie like that anywhere. The car is pretty good if it runs like that. With another trunk lid that should be very easy to find and a little body work this car could be a real driver. That 351 can be buffed up and you can find 4 barrel intake then you have something that will really move pretty good even as heavy as the car is. That 351 is a pretty good motor, you could even turn it into a 427 if you wanted to. It is well worth keeping, you could definitely get whatever money you put into it back out of it, specially with the way the interior seems to be good and complete and not really torn up.

I had a 72 Mercury Marquis. Loved that car. Big block, 428, or something. Can't remember. Headliner falling down like yours. Power to spare. That thing flew. Your making me wish I still had it.
