Been to many Trower concerts .. winterland Oakland Coliseum all up down the left coast Before volume restrictions . Imagine that yelling at each other in the car on the way home. He is the man. His deal is he truly enjoys jamming for the fans . The volume was planetary it created a vortex of sonic rock. He is DEFINITELY not forgotten to us who over many years stood in line rain or shine . Close your eyes it's about to begin Thanks Robin Trower for the awesome times.

Winterland was the bomb. We saw most of Trower’s shows he had there. I think it was 1977 he traveled with his own massive PA system and Tommy Bolin was on the same bill. What a guitar night! Not sure what was the loudest there though, Trower, Johnny Winter on his rehab comeback tour or ZZ Top with Billy Gibbons wall of double stacked Amps. God, I loved that place.

Like I posted saw Trower twice. Would have went to more but time and need to catch other acts through out the years. Time in the 80s and later years had to be on my side to catch again. But so the two times I did first in 75 with John Mayall opening. What a delight to have seen that legendary performer. RIP. Second time in 76. J. Geils Band opened RIP J. Geils. Both shows at Hara Arena Dayton.(Tornadoes 2019 tore through and building damaged and undergo taken down. Had financial difficulty before and stop shows prior to tornadoes)RIP Otherwise Robin had a style and tone all his own and always knew where he came from with enjoying Hendrix or blues masters back in the day. The sound to the sound of many generations that get into him.

Agree,,, We opened for Robin Trower as well as Paul Rogers at the Ventura theatre in 1999, both great shows! Robin is a kind, personable, Christian gentleman who I enjoyed talking with about England.... Lived there too. Paul was rather secretively hiding between our time on stage and his, he did sign my vinly copy of Burnin' sky and after Paul left the stage, I walked out onto center stage and pulled up his set list taped to the floor which is still in my clear plastic album sleeve. I spent time socializing with Pauls band mates, a young bassist who I never got his name but his guitarist was Michael Fisher, fornally of Heart and writer of that famous guitar riff on Barracuda.... Michael was a clown and enjoyed people,,, puff, puff, pass!

I started my guitar career in 1974 precisely because of Bridge of Sighs. I have seen Robin countless times since then and he is always a source of inspiration...In fact I have been a professional musician and educator for over 40 years now, largely due to him. He is so grossly underrated it borders on the criminal, but if was not for him, I would never had the love for music that I have, and would not have had the ability to support a family...Thank you, Mr. Trower for your wonderful, beautiful, talent and the GIFT of music. Great episode. OK, so the back story - I'm working as technician at GRT in Sunnyvale CA (GRT owned Chess/Janus Records, the flagship labels). GRT stood for General Recorded Tape. We had our own studios, engineering and mixing departments, etc. And since we were just down the road from Ampex, we had state of the art tape systems. And since we were the tape division of the whole line up, we got to work on a lot stuff coming out of our Chicago studios (balance, EQ'ing, re-timing, etc.). We made the production master tapes that went back to the pressing plants, and the dupe tapes that ran in our tape plant (8-track, Cassette, & R2R). So we're all getting a little sick of Jim Croce out on the production floor as they grab random tapes for QC. So during a lunch break on a Thursday (IIRC), I stick Bridge of Sighs in the QC player that has speakers all over the tape production floor. The other staff stopped in their tracks or hurried up to me to get me to pull that tape. Why? Because even though we made Stones tapes and just about everybody else's (under production contracts), nobody had anything like that. A&R was seriously set back in their chairs. The buzz started. Is this the new direction ... What a ride it was !!

The band had loaded up a little after 2:00 am at around 3:00 am Robin said I think I have played everything I have on paper , do you guys care if I just sit around and jam , everyone was cool with that , all six of us , yep all 6 of us sat and Robin played stuff he was making up off the top of his head while the 7 of us including Robin got drunk . Two things about Robin , he was never underrated & sure is not forgotten. Saw him several times in the early & mid 70s & once in 69 with Procol Harum. He may not be as well known by the younger folks but any of them that play should surely know who he is. Despite the pandemic stopping most all of us that do play Robin has had the same problems yet he is as great as he always has been perhaps even better & at over 70 he shows no signs of retiring from the music scene . He'll play till the day he dies. Seeing you posted some thing with Rory Gallagher it's the same thing only Rory's gone but forgotten NEVER gonna happen. Not to be the one to complain as it's great your doing this but there is one guy you really need to bring to your viewers , that's guitar player extraordinaire Mr. Paul Kossoff from FREE.. As with Robin & Rory underrated ,no he never was but he has fallen from many players eyes & ears & you surely should do something on one of rocks best players & that goes for the great Terry Kath. These guys were what 70s guitarists were all about & as influential as it gets. These guys are & were what Rock Guitar is all about. Nice presentation & keep up the good work.

Thank you Paul. Both Kossoff and Kath are on my list for videos at some point down the road. I’ve gotten some pushback on the term Forgotten, but honestly it’s just a name for the series. I tried thinking of some thing alliterative with a good ring to it. The series is about “lesser known” guitarists but every one of them has some fans keeping the faith alive. “Second-rate Slingers” wouldn’t work, so.... 😂🤣😂🤣🎶🎶🎶

Opened for Robin Trower at the Ventura Theatre in 1999. I stood on the side of the stage and watched the band go through warm ups before anybody was in the theatre. After they finished I approached Robin and asked him to sign my vinyl copy of Passion which he did with his smile .... We talked for a few minutes about England as I lived there in the 1960's... Robin is a truly wholesome person and is a Christian gentleman. Robin lives in a small town on the beach in Southern California and his name is on his mailbox by the curb, he actually invited me over... He is a personable, down to earth guy who is nothing like some of the other guitar gods we have opened for over the years,,, they will remain nameless...... But Robin remains in my memory ....

I like this series a LOT, but Robin is hardly forgotten, he's justifiably in the pantheon of greats!

That was an awesome presentation of a master musician whose music I have loved since the first album. Thank you.

"THIS IS IT !" Once again my friend you have shined a spotlight on the truly deserving.Robin has put out some new music that I listened to just a couple days ago.Robin is another strait up musician like Mick Ronson not worried about the drugs and alcohol that has destroyed so many. Thanks for the gear rundown at the end!

Trower is a living legend, one of the secrets of trower's tone is heavy strings and high strings action, thank you very much for the information. Greetings from Brazil.

Bill Nelson of Be Bop Deluxe would be a good subject for this series.

Definitely gets my vote, Nelson was a big influence on me as a guitarist back in the 70s.

A very perceptive choice. Nelson has never received (in the States) the plaudits his work deserves.

Saw Trower live in a small pub in the Bay Area in the early 80’s. He and SRV are my two favorite electric blues players!

My band opened for Robin Trower in Pittsburgh.Real magical guitarist, sonic sculpter, tone genius .Mike Bloomfield loved him, paid him some nice compliments when he was in Procul Harum. As great a band as Procul was,Robin Trower did us all a favor by striking out on his own."Day Of The Eagle", The Fool And Me" "Too Rolling Stoned" ,monumental achievements.I don't hear anybody coming close to him today.

Let's also celebrate when we listen to Robin .The Great James Dewar his collaboration was perfect for the overall sound of the band.

Very concise, professional work on this video. I thank you, young man ! Trower and a few others were around when the big bands ruled the earth. Back when beautiful, skilled, and enduring music was made.

I'm still listening to his albums. My only regret was never being able to see him play with his trio back in the 70's.

I completely agree, Trower is one of my favorites also. I bought the same album, except on vinyl in the 70's. He's on my regular playlist, including his most recent albums. I find his tone and playing style very soothing. I can listen to his playing for hours. In the past couple of years I have focused on guitar again and learned how to play a few of his songs, including Bridge of Sighs. I liked, subscribed and hit the bell. I really enjoy your channel, keep up the great content.

Bridge Of Sighs is one of those tunes that sounds great in the middle of the night when you're half asleep with the radio down low.

The follow up to “Bridge of Sighs”. “For Earth Below” is equally fantastic. The title track, “Althea” and “A Tale Untold” well worth a listen.
@markmiwurdz2023 жыл бұрын
@C.D.Macauley. The other track from "For Earth Below" that really gets the stank face on is "Confessin' Midnight". Robin really makes his guitar growl and James Dewar's voice is epic. Been a Trower fan since 1975. You may already know this. James Dewar used to be in Scots singer Lulu's backing band The Luvvers in the 1960's. Then James was in another Scots band called Stone The Crows. James Dewar's vocals have been overlooked for too many years. We are so lucky to have all the recordings.

Mark: You’re right. “Confessin’ Midnight” is downright nasty. I completely agree with your views on James Dewar too. What a voice! Only saw RT once, at the old Cap Center in Landover MD. Am not sure if it was the “Bridges” or “Earth Below” tour. Either way it was a great show. Did not know Dewar had played with Lulu. Thanks for the info. Was in a store in AZ and some young kid was digging “Lady Love”. I said, “Not bad for a 45 year old tune, eh?” Today’s music just can’t compare with that of our era. I guess every generation says that but, in our case, it’s true. Happy listening.

@C.D. Macauley. You have probably seen RT when he appeared on those old videos of the BBC TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test" from the early 1970's. My favourite performance is "Little Bit Of Sympathy" where Robin really lets it rip, while James Dewar and drummer Reg Isidore keep the rhythm right there! Reg ( a gentleman of Afro-Carribean descent) was a great rock drummmer (RIP). He was later replaced by Bill Lordan. Keep rockin', stay safe and well.

At least there was live playing on TOGWT. Everything was lip-synced on Top of the Pops. To the point where artists dropped the pretense and it became a running gag the audience was in on.

I am a huge fan of Robin Trower, and truly appreciate your knowledge of his background, and opinion of his work. I saw him for the first time in 1987, and again in 2017, getting to actually meet him the second time. He is my guitar idol! Thank you! By the way, new album out 04/29/22! 🎸🤘

I'm so glad I stumbled across this. I'm an old guitar hack in his late 50s and to say that Robin was a primary influence in my playing is an understatement. I used to fly down the gravel roads in rural Missouri in my 69 beatle with Trower, James Gang, Boston, Hendrix, Pat Traverse, and any other hard driving band from that era blasting out my Craig 6X9 speakers. My playlist was limited to a shoebox full of 8 tracks that would eventually be replaced by a countless number of cassettes that slid around in the back seat with beer bottles and dirty laundry during my college years. When I get a chance interact with young players, I always refer them to Mr. Trower. I love the reactions when they hear him for the first time. "How did I not hear about this guy?", is the common response. I have left many converts in my wake. Robin is timeless.

I LOVE all the memories this series is conjuring. Because my dad was a big Trower fan he was a guy I listened to when I first started playing guitar. Couldn’t touch the solos of course but some of the riffs and rhythm parts... anyway I was jamming with a friend who was a little older and far better than me and I brought up Trower and he was, like, “Who?” So I lent him my greatest hits CD and the next week he gave it back, with this sheepish look like, “the master was schooled by the student” haha! I’ll never forget. It’s a big reason why I created this series. So many guys who people just never are exposed to!

@@TheGuitarHistorian You may dig this comment… My first guitar was a nylon string and I dove headfirst into the blues because of Freddie King playing Goin Down and Jeff Beck copying him in 1971 Then I bought an electric guitar and Robin Trower steamrolled me even deeper with Bridge of Sighs in 73 Turns out that they were both fans of Albert King and I bought Albert’s 1972 STAX release: I’ll play the blues for you… Which bulldozed me fully into the blues (as no one could stretch a note 7 frets to imitate a human voice/cry...except Albert) And Albert’s masterpiece never made you sad… Albert said “the blues is all to soothe” it gives you “Blues Power” !!! The only thing that saved me from digging to China pursuing the blues was the 1976 release of a perfect album by George Benson: Masquerade Every song was off the charts great and he recorded it in three days… But it wasn’t until 40 years later when I listened to Karen Carpenter sing this masquerade, that I realized George had borrowed her singing style and Phrasing... but his happy licks were incomparable My last observation is that all four of those musicians did not play to make you feel sad... It was uplifting music... performed by four guitarists, who either do or rightly should, appear in the top 20 guitarists of all time Also of note is the blues is uniquely American music and got bounced back to us by the British.... Robin Trower is the only Britain who could mesmerize you with his playing and truly make you spellbound (And he didn’t do drugs! ) No one else could pull that off. Not Page, Beck, Clapton, With or without drugs) The only guitarist who could do it was Jimi Hendrix (who was stoned immaculate And has been dead 52 years) I guess my most humbling observation is that so many people have tried to sound like: Freddy King(Clapton Beck SRV) Albert King(Clapton, Beck, SRV) George Benson(every jazzman) Robin Trower ( No one !!!!) RobinTrower’s sound, his touch, and the speed with which he plays the blues, which everyone else pretty much plays slowly: but hell no... not Robin...! He’s known as a rock musician but he’s really a blues musician if you listen carefully And he could do more with his pinky than any other guitar player could with their’s Robin Trower gives everyone else and interiority complex Thanks and keep up the good work! John in Santa Barbara The only other living legend who can still play is Jeff Beck and maybe that’s someone to do on your podcast… I’m sorry if I missed it if you’ve already done Beck Other notables that you might not have reviewed: blues men: Billy Gibbons, Johnny Winters, Stevie Ray originalists: Roy Buchanan, Steve Lukather
