Forgotten Friends Friday! - Creating with 3D Embossing Folders!

I have been saving to get a big shot. I have been wanting one for a very long time. I just love how the embossing and the inka gold makes the drab card stock so rich and elegant. Beautiful. Believe me I have a long list of wanting to make and do also. And you my friend are the culprit of my long list because you have such great ideas. I wonder if you and I will ever get thru our list because we keep adding more to the list. You know what I mean? For every one thing I have made I have already added 2 more things to the list. So I guess the struggle is real to be able to do it all! 😞😊🥰. Oh my gosh the book page pocket and tag with that grungy embossing. How very cool! I’m in love!!

These are so much fun. I keep some cereal boxes or soda boxes cut to size when I have something that needs some extra room between the platforms. That way if I need one of 10 extra pieces they are easy to grab and easily replaced when they get too squished. YOU CAN ALSO DIE CUT OR EMBOSS SODA CANS!! Watch for sharp edges! But SO SO fun

For some reason, the Tim holtz number embossing things, I keep feeling like they would be super cool to cut them apart into the different numbers and add them to clusters!?!? Maybe they typewriter one too? It would add a lot to the clusters even if it was covered by stuff!

You can also fold a piece if cardstock to use as a shimmy. The shiny side of foil faces down toward the paper, for better results.

So glad you pulled out your Sizzix, I haven't used mine in a really long time. Your embossed pieces all turned out great, but my favorite was the ones that you added the thing gold paper to. The results were amazing. I could see myself going crazy with that stuff.

🤣Gayle, did you say "it's a bit of a goat show" at about 10 minutes into this video? That's a new one on me. Cracked me up. I turned up the volume to make sure I heard you right? I have very few embossing folders but they always make such an impact. I loved the botanical one and the typewriter strike keys. I have never seen the folder type ones you said we're good to use on spine. Neither have I heard the trick of spraying the paper. So for me, this was a very helpful tutorial. That Royal Blue color was gorgeous. And that gold embossing was over the top. Beautiful!

I enjoyed watching you using you embossing folders, makes me realize I need to get mine out and play again too. When I use my Vagabond machine I'm in a tight space too, so when I get to the end I only pick up the top plate and what I run through up and push the bottom plate a back through the machine. Makes it easier for me.

This video is perfect timing for me. I am trying to figure out what machine to get so I can have the option to cut or emboss. I believe you said the was the Sizzix BigShot. I have been on the fence about wether I wanted to make this investment and then I went to the thrift store and scored a bunch of dye cut and embossing folders and now this video. I think it’s a sign!😊

May I make a suggestion? Before you buy an embossing machine, also check on the costs of the replacement pads. Last time I checked Sizzix Big Shot had a lower cost for the replacements. ALso check around for price as sometimes the Sizzix site has them on sale. I too have to budget carefully.

I have one of the 3"ers, too, and I have been happy with it for years. But just a couple of months ago I found a Big Shot at a thrift store for only $15 so I bought it. Haven''t yet got any dies or embossing folders for it. I'm looking through Etsy after seeing Gayle's vid though.

This video was really fun to watch because I haven't done any of that yet and don't have the tools or the paper to do it with. I can see how it would be very good for card making and I send over 200 missionary cards every year, all handmade. This year I had to stick in some readymade cards and I just hated to do that. I added one of the dollar store cutting pads to my pads for an extra thickness. It's about 12x6 so it fits my Gemini and works great.

I actually had an embossing machine, but not your brand. I never used it so I donated it to a local library for their crafting projects. I wish I had seen this video first, but I know it is happy in its new home, so it's all good. I love the tags you made, and the idea of an embossed book spine is very appealing. Maybe it's time to revisit the idea of replacing it. Thanks for the reminder of what this tool can do.

If your embossing folder seems to need more shims but everything feels to big or not big enough, remember you have two of the clear plates? You’ve only been using one and trying things to go with it. And with your Dandelion paper that seems subtle, remember your other fun medium. You can kind of dry brush with paint. I love embossing stuff.

Wonderful forgotten friends video. I have one of these that I bought used and was a little confused and some of it I see that I need to get some extra plates and shims. I also have one that does the same thing and die cuts and it's electric. I should pull this out it might be fun with even papers that I have collected from junk mail and stuff since I don't have a lot of paper and can't afford to do digits yet. Excellent video. I always mist my 3D embossing folders and cut the paper to size to prevent warping on the edges. I think the dandelion embossing might have worked better on a paper without a texture. ❤️ Shirley

I keep a few pieces of cardbackings from packaging and various card stocks on hand for getting the best thickness. Sometimes I have to fiddle with them to get it working. Grrrr! I have to put in various combinations to get the best thickness. I wish there were only 2 or 3 thicknesses of folders. 🦌💌❤️📚🥰

Happy Friday! Those 3D embossing folders are amazing! I have done some embossing on my Spellbinders machine and if it's too little pressure I start adding cardstock 2 sheets at a time. If you have time to spare, search "Jennifer McGuire embossing folder techniques" on YT. She adds inks to the paper or folder before running it through. Very messy and fun to do!
