I have good news. An English translation patch of Melfand Stories is recently released. The game translated by an online entity called Gan. I was in the 8th grade at the time of the game’s release in Japan. It was released in Japan about a week before Final Fantasy VI.

You're the best channel on KZbin for finding all these (forgive me for using this term) "hidden gems". Like you've talked about it before too, other channels call something as well known as Demons Quest as a hidden gem. But THIS game, this cool Japanese beat em up, is an actual genuine hidden gem. You're constantly talking about games no other channel does and that's part of why I love this channel and binge watch your videos one after the other

Most people who make videos or articles about "hidden gems" just search other people's lists and pick their favorites.

It's also because those games were hidden gems in the days of that console. With internet the hidden gems are constantly getting fewer.

About the music, a lot of developers weren't used to the concept of managing PCM audio samples for instruments, since before the SNES basically all Japanese console and PC hardware used sound chips with NES style waveforms or a combination of wavetable synthesis or FM synthesis. These all generate mathematically perfect frequencies for notes of the standard 12-note scale. With samples, a single sound file has to be manually tuned to a base frequency to be resampled for different notes, and a combination of it being the early 90s (less availability of automatic tuning software) and this being a totally foreign concept for composers and sound programmers resulted in some games where the frequencies of different instrument samples were not tuned uniformly. Like a piano sample might be tuned more or less to C natural, while the string section sample might be tuned somewhere in between C and C# or B. Which led to some noticeable off key dissonance in some games, a good example being Breath of Fire 1.

You should consider doing a switchdrunk series. Seeing as a hoard of classic arcade games are on it, new games that would have fit in way back when the classic consoles were out not to mention some of them would have been considered all time greats had they came out back then. You’ve done steamdrunk and I think that the Nintendo switch is much more of a prime console to this for over steam. Also going into sega Saturn, psone, Dreamcast etc. would be a great way to branch out and id love to hear your opinions about games on those systems.
