Lamont, I am one of the volunteers that works at Mount Moriah. I am also a direct descendent of one of the original caretakes. He is buried in Section B along with 12 other family members including my grandparents. My father was also a cemetery caretaker when he was younger. My father and I have reset 177 headstones in the last year. If you come back you should also walk through the Yeadon side of the cemetery and see the old naval section.

One of the worse things about progression of a society is how that they destroy cemeteries and other historical places and then people will forget their grass roots they want all these modern cities at the cost of destroying the past it’s such a shame that some don’t care about what is run over to make changes in order to pad their own wallets thanks for sharing this Lamont.

Rodney Dangerfield was a comedian in the late 20th century who joked a lot about how he couldn't get any respect. Hilarious ! @@judystine2783 , yes that’s a valid point. But the death and decaying is hidden underneath the ground. It’s the living part above ground (nature, birds & the other small animals that shelter in the living trees ) that our lord is one with. And that means he is at one with the beauty surrounding all that death as well? Also Man must be reminded of the beauty that once was that has passed from this realm to the Heavens. God works in mysterious ways.

I just want to know everyone’s story. They were once alive, people just like us, with hopes and dreams, pain and hurt. They laughed, they cried. It’s amazing to see that even though we did not know these people, we still care for them so much. And hopefully one day, their home can be restored to a respectable state.

My parents used to take us to cemeteries when we were little. Whenever we visited an area, or city, we went to one of the older cemeteries. My Great Aunt is one of the forgotten. She was born in 1911. At 9 months old she developed double Pneumonia. Basically a long drawn out death sentence. Anyhow the Dr was sent for. He happened a Family Relative. All the other kids were made to leave the room except for my Grandmother, who was 4 yrs old. The Dr said she could stay because she would never remember what happened, but she did. That's how I know the story. Anyhow the Dr left my G-Grandparents with a choice: Let her linger on until she died, which could take months, or he could her ease away. My G-Grandparents chose the later. Remember this is told by someone who was 4 when it happened. The Dr. gave her a shot; she coughed twice and the third cough she coughed up blood and was gone. To put it in perspective, My G-Grandparents chose to kill their baby, and the Dr administered Death. She is buried in a graveyard that is about an acre in size, but only 4-5 graves are cared for. The rest is fenced in, grown over in woods now and cattle run freely thru it. There is no marker marking her grave, and no one knows she ever existed, but me. My kids have no interest in such matters. Rest In Peace: Vera Rosley Andrews. You will be remembered until I die.

This is one of my fav cemeteries. If you are still in PA there’s a cool little eerie town about 3 hours north called Darktown (north of Allentown, near Whitehall). The cemetery has a story about Becky Brown haunting it. We used to pay her grave a visit often when I was a teen. The town has an old fire station that has been closed for decades, but it’s a good visit.

Great video! It's so sad how cemeteries are abandoned. As a child (1950's), my grandfather's farm bordered "Olive Cemetery", which was only about 1/2 acre at the edge of one of his 25 acre fields. There was a house on the other side of the cemetery. As grade schoolers, we'd visit these graves and dream about digging one up. As time passed and the trees grew, the cemetery was absorbed by forest. Then, the people next door stole the headstones and stacked them about 6 feet from a tree; making a place to stack fire wood. Shameful. Then, the cemetery land was sold, excavated, and now a house (with a basement) stands there. Modern land surveys do not show the cemetery. I still have an aerial photo of that land, with borders defining (and naming) the cemetery. What does this say of our civilization? Sad, really sad.

My dad grew up just a couple of blocks, from Mount Moriah cemetery, and I grew up just a couple of blocks farther from it. My dad always swore, that Mount Moriah was haunted. That triple archway at the beginning of the video, in the large middle arch, it was the called the "angel swing". They used to say, that late at night, people saw what they claimed was an angel swinging there. My dad said, that he saw it when he was a teenager, while hanging out with his friends late at night. Apparently, right in mid swing, the person just suddenly "dissolved", as my dad watched. I don't know if he really saw anything or not. Be he always truly believed, that he had, and never wavered from the story. When my dad died, my uncle suggested burying him in Mount Moriah. But, in 2009, the cemetery was in even worse shape than it is now. The weeds were taller than me and it was home to packs of stray dogs. So, I told my uncle, that burying my dad there really wasn't an option. But, the group The Friends Of Mount Moriah have really been working on cleaning it up.

Thanks for putting this up Lamont. My grandmother , who immigrated to this country in 1863 from Northern Ireland when she was 5 is buried there. She purchased eight graves so my grandfather and my mother are buried there too along with a few Uncles. I remember (I was 14) being at my mothers burial (November 18, 1956) and my oldest brother (he was 26 or so) pointing to Betsy Ross grave, (a flag was on a poll) that was about 40/80 or so feet up a small rise from my moms grave section 58 Lot 56. It's overgrown with weed and weed type trees. Younger members of family (I'm 80) hope to clean the area in 2023.They say they moved Betsy Ross from here to her home on Arch St. in 1976 our bicentennial year. Betsy Ross died 1-30-1836, so lets think about that. It would be 140 years Betsy was in the ground in a wood coffin. When they dug where they thought she was they found nothing. That seems right after wood and a body are in the ground 140 years. They found bones and some wood one grave over so they said that was her and moved that person. That was probably a "newer" unmarked grave. I think Betsy Ross is "still" right there with my mom and her family. The last time I visited the flag poll was still standing. Those Smaller tombstone's were mostly pushed over by vandals. Moms was pushed over too, My grandmother has a large pointed obelisk type with most everybody's name on it. Luckily, that is too large for the vandals to move.

Hey Lamont thanks for sharing this video of one of many Philadelphia cemetery's that has fallen into a state of decay. The city should be responsible for the maintenance, but the politicians in the city are too busy lining their pockets to give a damn about the city's founders to keep their graves clean and safe and maintain their grave markers. Go to the City of Camden, NJ if you're still in the area and check how the city of Camden takes care of the old Camden Cemetery between Haddon and Mount Ephraim Avenues and you'll see most of the graves are desecrated and the city of Camden employees threw the pieces of gave markers into the Delaware River.... now it's used as a dump, playground, place to do drugs and get laid by the local prostitutes. Very sad what's happened to the cities in America.

You do understand that there are at least 100 volunteers who have put a lot of time and effort over the last DECADE to restore this beautiful place...which by the way is approx. 60-70 % restored. Maybe next time, get in touch with someone who actually puts in the time everyday...not someone who has no knowledge or understanding about what is really going on there. I’m so fascinated with cemeteries always have been. It does make me sad when I see deserted ones. I wish the county or whoever would’ve continue to keep it up after the last board member passed away.

As a Parent, the thought of not being able to be burried with my child is Heartbreaking ( my child is alive and well) My daughter is SN. So I'm part of that " Community" and I have heard other parents whos children are Terminal say that they will cremate thier child and Keep the Ashes with them.. one reason is so they won't get left behind, if a Family moves out of State ect... then when itsthe parents time to go, they don't have to worry about getting back to thier child, thoer child can be with them then..

Thank you Lamont for showing us around the cemetery, it’s evening time here in the U.K. A lot of graves stones are knocked over there, sad no one can do anything to help put the cemetery together in the part that needs it.

This is so sad ☹️. Some of these people go back to the 1800's. The city should be restoring this cemetery or someone around there. The city should be ashamed at how no one is caring for this place. What if it was a loved one of yours? Why don't they do something if their still living. Ik by reading the comments there is a man who said he is trying to restore it. He can only do so much, a little at a time. It has been left to deteriorate for so long, it's alot of work. Thanks Lamont for showing us this cemetery & bringing it to viewers attention. Great job! RIP to everyone who is buried there. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

I thank you for going into this place, and hopefully the video might spur someone who cares to get on this maintenance. After three or more generations, graves are forgotten. But if they are part of area history, others should be picking up the flag.

Do you actually know what goes on at this cemetery, or are you basing your comment from this video? You do understand that there are at least 100 volunteers who have put a lot of time and effort over the last DECADE to restore this beautiful place...which by the way is approx. 60-70 % restored. Maybe next time, get in touch with someone who actually puts in the time everyday...not someone who has no knowledge or understanding about what is really going on there. Check out the fommc Facebook page if you would like to learn more.

Great video! I am in Philadelphia welcome. I wish you can go to my dads cemetery a remarkable man! used to own a well known Jewish deli when he died we could not afford to give him a headstone, and he still does not have one. It has been over 9 years. He is buried at King David Cemetery in Langhorne PA. Thanks Maybe one day I can tell you the story. Love your channel and the passion for what you do. ! Michelle

Many years ago, my sociology instructor told our class that people are remembered for 3 generations after their death, then forgotten. By that he meant personal knowledge of the deceased, knew how they spoke, color hair, likes and dislikes, etc. After the 3rd generation dies, most likely only photos exist, if annotated on the back.

Just wanted you to know how very much I enjoy your videos. Years ago when your loved ones passed, the funeral homes would charge a fee for “perpetual care” I don’t know how much that amount was but can you imagine how the survivors would feel seeing this disrespect after they paid their hard earned money for care of their loved ones for life. So sad

Just by the sizes of these trees and thickness of the bushes it seems like it's beens decades since that cemetery been cleaned up. I guessing maybe about 35 years or more. 🤷 But it's a kinda hunting yet sad site to see. It makes you think about life and how vanity stuff really don't matter cause when you dead you done ⚰️⚱️ is only the memories of you by who knew you that lives on ☠️ like past people who died in the eighteen century and in the early nineteenth hundreds today in 2021 is like they didn't even existed cause nobody alive today to have a memory of them. Life is something else we all just living to one day die ☠️ 👻 ⚰️⚱️

Lamont, I must strongly disagree with you on your statement 'no one living ever visits anyone buried in Mount Moriah". Many of my ancestors are buried there, and although I now live in upstate New York, whenever I'm in the greater Philly area I do stop by and visit with my great great grandparents and my great great great grandparents. In fact, in October 2020 I planted daffodil bulbs on their graves. I have other ancestors there, but I know some don't have head stones, and others are in areas not yet cleared.

Lynda is correct. People go to Mount Moriah to visit the graves of ancestors, to perform vollunteer maintenance, and to help with clearing the overgrown areas are so vividly shown in this episode. I have two plots of ancestors that I visit at least annually.

John Barrymore is buried there. I grew up not far from there. My Aunt is actually part of a non profit group called Friends of Mt.
