It's really heartwarming to see you working with your Dad on every project. My Dad, who is most fortunately still around at 83, was a mechanic in the Canadian Forces for the early part of his 36-year career. I learned a lot from him - firstly, even progressing past the point of how to hold a flashlight and swear! One project we undertook together was replacing the throw out bearing and clutch in my first car, a 1979 Mustang... in his garage... in Canada... in November. It was a real learning experience and I treasure the times we spent together, and still do. Family is clearly very important to all of you and it's wonderful to see.

Back in 1978 me and my wife flew from California to Dallas to visit her sister and family. Her and her husband knew we didn't have anything to drive while we were in town so he handed me his keys to his 76 CJ 5 Renegade. That thing was so much fun to drive, within a month after getting home we had one in our driveway. It was a blast to drive.

My first vehicle I bought when I was 18 was a 72 CJ5. 304 V8, 3speed, headers,4 barrel. It had 12" wide tires on 15" wagon wheel rims. It was an absolute beast! Climbed like a goat! But like all Jeeps the body literally rotted off the frame. I had a lot of good times and great memories with that truck.

I haven't finished the vid yet, but @lowbuckgarage had the same fueling issue you had, brand new Delphi pump had way too much fuel pressure. Napa had a non Delphi brand and solved the issue. Had almost 8 lbs at first, when he got the Napa pump it was around 4. Softer spring in the Napa pump got him less pressure. And just got to point where you found the problem lol. Funny, he had the same issue in this week's video!

Sometimes you have to get a pressure regulator and put it in the line between the pump and carb. They are not that expensive. Normally between 3 to 5 pounds are all you need.

SAME ISSUE last year. I had my '75 CJ-5 flooding the engine with a chinaBay Carter YFA carb...turned out that after 3 different new mechanical fuel pumps I couldn't get the fuel pressure down. Ended up with a dead-head fuel pressure regulator and an inline gauge to give it 5-7 psi and it worked great.

I know some Chrysler products came with a fuel filter that had a built-in return line to return any excess pressure to the fuel tank, Wix 33054. I know this because My old Dodge St. Regis had one, and I tried to replace it with a standard return line and had the same issue. This issue would arise also if the return line got plugged. Basically, these fuel pumps were higher volume, and helped compensate vapor lock after higher demand such as high RPM, or heavy load I would assume. Great video, thanks for sharing.

I wish I had it to this day but it was handed down to my two younger brothers for them to learn to drive and use. From what I've heard about marine applications with mechanical fuel pumps, you need to shim or space out the pump from the block to get the proper pressure. I suspect that is the reason they supply two gaskets now a days. Worth a try.

AMCs often used a filter that had a fuel return as the pump puts out more psi than the carb actually needs. so it could be the stock carb was fine, but needed a fuel return filter. older fords used a similar filter as well and that's what i used on my 72 gremlin.

also those motors had hydraulic lifters, so some of the noise could be from them being dirty and partially collapsed. might be an idea to run lifter cleaner thru the oil and see if they clean up. tranny fluid can work as well.

Many Jeeps in this era utilized a fuel filter with 3 connections. The smaller 1/4 inch line returned fuel to the tank. especially at idle. While under acceleration , I believe that they thought a higher fuel pressure would assure proper fuel delivery. At an idle the higher pressure from the fuel pump will bleed off thru the return line to the tank. If this line was blocked off or not used , the carb would flood when not under load. Many of these return lines were rusted away or plugged. I have found this three line system used by AMC, Jeep, GM and Dodge. I started servicing fuel systems in 1966 and still am in the trade today. I hope this may help. Ray O
