The JD tractors were as tough as they come(the poppers were bullet proof)but the 5010,5020,6030 were also ridiculously over built also,so that cab was a big feature on those western units I personally would keep that unique western cab just saying bro, cheers

Right! I am planning on leaving it. I am a Deere fan of the 10-20 series. Not that the 30 and 40 series weren’t great tractors, they just lack the “heft” of the older series

Those were great tractors. Dad had 67 5020. Be sure to keep tabs on the oil to see if there is water in it. That has a wet sleeve engine and sometimes after setting a while the o-ring on the bottom of one of the sleeves will leak water into the oil. Dad's did it just setting over the winter. And timing is critical with that engine, learn how to check the timing and set it exact and it will make a difference on how it pulls. Yes, you have a 24 volt system, actually you have two twelve volt systems, one negitave ground and one positive that come together in the starter to make 24 volts. You have 12 volt lights and half run off of one set of batteries and the other half run off the other set of batteries, and the charge in both sets of batteries needs to be kept equal or the alternator won't charge. We converted Dad's to 12 volt negitave ground with getting a 12 volt starter and alternator. Like I said, they are great old tractors.

I'm 69yrs old , started helping dad on the farm in 1966 on a new 4020 John Deere. In 1980 dad traded for a 1970 5020. A few yrs later I bought my 5020. The front axle is the weakest place to pull on. The frame is the strongest place to pull on. If you spent as time on a 5020 as I have , you would be glad to have that ugly cab! A 5020 weights about 9 1/2 to 10 ton. I now have a 4010 and 4020 they do every thing I need to do.

Some John Deere 5010 tractors have been restored by collectors, preserving and showcasing these vintage machines at tractor shows and events. If you own or are interested in a specific John Deere 5010 tractor, keep in mind that individual tractors can vary based on factors such as maintenance, modifications, and any restoration work that may have been done over the years. The John Deere 5010 was manufactured in the 1960s. It was part of the New Generation series of tractors introduced by John Deere during that era

A local bloke bought one almost the same, but with air con unit on the cab roof, like you, he didnt like the cab, so off it came, he let me work it for 3 hours, but I am a Massey man, i wasnt fond tbh. He had had it on a HP tester, 120hp at the PTO. He still uses it on land work on the family farm, it will be about 30 years since he imported it from the states to the UK.

I've never seen that cab before. It should stay. Also you should invest in the Milwaukee Tire inflator and not the little one, get the bigger one. I pumped up a combine front tire with it but it took a couple of batteries lol.

That is an awesome find!!!! I am team keep the cab, and let it been in factory work clothes. Unless it is some rare one off it doesn't add much value to repaint and remove the cab. If you do that it looks like every other restored 5010. Just my opinion.

Clearly you are a Massey Ferguson guy but appreciate them all, my family uses alot of Massey's on the farm from an 1130 to i think 4 1085's and 3 165's and just got a narrow front 4020 but my favorite is the the 1130 rite behind an 8700 ford we had when i was a kid. That ridiculous looking cab will feel great in December and January. In fact when pressure washed it won't look so ridiculous. 5010 is one of my favorite tractors. When pressure washed it is possible the batteries will somewhat return but I doubt it. This engine sounds wonderful. The pulling power of the 5010 is very great. Whatever that guage in the middle of the dash is reporting, after you drove it to your friend's it was up in the green and when it left it's grave it was sitting down on the peg not reading anything.
