I would love to see them reopen the entire line. Perhaps they could run trains through there again. Who knows maybe the railroad will make it into Carson City once more.

It's amazing how much of the orginial right-of-way is still left after all of these years, despite the urbanization of Carson & Reno. I'd like to see the Fernley & Lassen (a subsiduary of the Southern Pacific Railroad) that operated between Fernley Nv. & Westwood, Ca. via Susanville & Pyramid Lake.

this is why alot of rail beds been put to trails to preserve the bed and right away. be nice to see a train through silver valley and over lookout in Idaho again

As a life long Nevadan and fan of the Virginia & Truckee, it disgusts me to see all of the urbanization along and over the old V&T road bed. Sad but a fact of modern life.

It’s called progress. When a railroad is abandoned and removed, if it isn’t railbanked or converted into a trail, usually the row is sold off to developers, usually land reverts to adjacent property owners upon abandonment of a rail line.

You know, if they ever restore the Caron to Reno line(which they most likely won't, I'm just sayin), then they'd have to do alot of re-routing in Reno and Carson, but I can imagine them restoring much of the washoe valley tracks. It'd be cool to see trains going across the old highway again, I wish I was around to see it back in the old days. =(

OMG! This is a surprise and a real find. Having arrived in Reno in late 1950 and seeing where some of the ROW was, I had often wondered about the remainder of the route. Thanks for a job well done. BTW, if I remember correctly it was the 1950 flood in Reno which took away the V&T bridge over the Truckee and I don't think anyone knows where that ended up. So again, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Very nice; very nice indeed. How about doing the Eureka and Palisade? Or the old SP Jawbone Branch? Or maybe the Boise Traction Company in Treasure Valley Idaho?

Astounding how much of the original roadbed between Carson City and the Union Pacific's Reno Yard (originally the junction to the Central Pacific, and site of the engine-shed conflagration that killed #26 the night of 1 May 1950 - Reno Fire traced it to flammables in the pit apparently ignited by burning oil that dropped from the firebox) has been taken up with projects after the tracks were pulled up; not much of the original right of way was left untouched. Speaking of a future Forgotten Railroads, how about one on the Mt. Tamalpais & Muir Woods Railway, Marin County, CA, USA (1896-1930)? Much of the original roadbed is still used by CalFire for access to the brush that fueled several conflagrations that the railway helped combat.

Wonderful. The only addition that would have been nice: use 2 colors, green for the line and maybe orange/red for when track still exists.

I agree this was very good. Other ideas, NWP narrow gauge (make Ken B happy), the SN Oakland to Chico.

Very informative. I like how you added the old photos to remind us of the permanence of the mountains in the background; those landmarks haven't changed much in the last 150 years.

Where did you find this map overlay? I'm planning out a project mapping out and filming what the line looks like now while also telling this railroads history. I suppose I could use your video, but I'm also curious where you attained this information. Many thanks in advance.

Didn’t the tourist operation have to build new track on the row to extend it toward Carson City, well the outskirts? But the section from Carson City to Reno was built upon in areas? I see in this video that the red line even goes right down a residential street. That means that at some point after the original railroad’s abandonment and removal, a housing subdivision was built right over the row. Sort of impossible to rebuild the railroad on the original row there now.

perhaps the old SP line going from Benson,Arizona,thru Bisbee,then on to Douglas Arizona.When the copper mines and smelter were operating, Douglas was the second busiest city in Arizona.The depot in Douglas is a grand building.Most of the railbed still exists.

Does Carson City have an original V&T station like Virginia City? But the tourist railroad’s station is located outside of Carson City? Would it be at least possible to rebuild the line into downtown Carson City? Isn’t there a railroad museum in Carson City with old trains on display, etc.?
@gusterposey5 жыл бұрын
The Original passenger depot in Carson City still stands, it's been home to a number of businesses since the V&T shut down. It would be really tough to rebuild the V&T along its old right of way into downtown Carson City. Things like the High School and Mills Park and the Swimming Pool/Community Center have all been constructed along the ROW since 1950, not to mention everything to the eastern side of town. The site where the enginehouse was is still somewhat empty though, since the old engine house stood until 1991, there's still an empty lot there. There is a fantastic railroad museum in town, and they have a bunch of the surviving V&T stuff, as well as a lot of other cool stuff, it's definitely worth a visit if you're in town!

You know, when we lived in Reno, what irritated us the most was how HIGH the ticket prices were! Before it opened, there were people in Virginia City who thought they could use the V&T to comute to Carson City. Ha! With the prices they were asking, it was out of the question! That's been some time ago - I hope they've lowered their prices since then!!!!!!! They were really, really expensive. -- Bob

I understand Carson City had a robust train infrastructure then, but how would passenger trains turn once they arrived in Reno? Was it just an extra locomotive on siding oriented for southbound traffic then collecting cars, and the NB locomotive then moved on switching tracks to orient SB as convenient?
@gusterposey2 жыл бұрын
There was a turntable in the yards in Reno, so I imagine they could've just backed the train down to the Reno yards once it was ready and moved things around. Here's a photo of the yards and turntable in the later years of the V&T wnhpc.com/details/tbr0009
